The LSU Board of Supervisors has formally approved a motion to remove Troy Middleton’s name from the main library. Middleton is a former LSU president who had segregationist views. At today’s board meeting, former lawmaker Woody Jenkins spoke on behalf of the Middleton family, who opposes the decision. Jenkins called Middleton an American World War One and Two war hero.

A steroid called dexamethasone (dek-suh-meh-thuh-sown) has shown it can reduce the risk of death for seriously ill COVID-19 patients by a third. Kevin Barnhart spoke with a Tulane doctor who used it on patients.

In the first update in two days, Louisiana reports the removal of 1,666 duplicate COVID-19 cases from the state’s total case count down to 48,515. Total deaths… 2,972, up by 22. Hospitalizations… 561, down by 18 with ventilator usage falling to 75, down by 8.
Governor Edwards says he is concerned about the state’s growth in COVID numbers and asks the public to take the pandemic as seriously as they did when we first flattened the curve…

Attorney Susan Stone says the unidentified player cannot attend school, he’s lost his scholarship and she says this could have a long-lasting impact on the player’s life…

Louisiana health officials say about a third of the nursing homes in the state are not regularly testing their staff and residents. State health officer Doctor Jimmy Guidry says facilities who fail to follow the state’s testing guidelines could be hit with sanctions…

Guidry says they are asking nursing homes to conduct weekly tests on all of their residents and staff if there are known COVID cases in the facility.

State officials call the recent rise in COVID-19 case numbers “alarming” as we near next week’s announcement on potentially moving into Phase Three.  Neighboring states are starting to see record COVID cases, and Governor Edwards says these numbers should be a gut check for Louisianans to reevaluate if they have been slacking on their social distancing and mask-wearing. He says the threat has not passed.

Medical experts in the United Kingdom indicate that a steroid treatment has provided a glimmer of hope in treatment of COVID-19. Dexamethasone appears to cut the risk of death for ventilator patients by a third.   Tulane Medical Center pulmonary care Dr. Joshua Denson has administered the therapy with a handful of patients.  While he has his reservations and believes it should not become standard of care yet, he feels overall hospitals are getting better at figuring out how to manage patients and says that could be because they aren’t seeing the onslaught of patients coming through the door they once did.

A suspended LSU football player files a federal lawsuit accusing the university he was unjustly suspended on an accusation he had non-consensual sex with a female student. Attorney Susan Stone says their client was not given access to evidence until after his guilt was already determined by the school.

Since June 10th the state has reported 4,200 new coronavirus cases. Assistant health secretary Doctor Alex Billioux says most of those are linked to social gatherings or households, but not to protests.

Louisiana officials are sounding the alarm as the state has seen a spike in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations. Assistant Health Secretary Dr. Alex Billioux says there are three regions in particular that are very concerning, Acadiana, southwest Louisiana and central Louisiana

Governor Edwards is sounding the alarm over a rise in coronavirus cases. He’s urging Louisiana residents to make sure they are taking proper precautions to reduce the spread of the virus. The state is reporting over 42-hundred new cases of COVID-19 since June 10th.

To qualify workers must earn under 50,000 a year. A prior version had the limit at 70,000 a year, but the bill’s author Shreveport Representative Sam Jenkins says that’s not fiscally feasible.

President Trump says Saints Quarterback Drew Brees will regret apologizing for his national anthem protest comments.

LSU men’s basketball associate head coach Greg Heiar has announced on Twitter he’s left the program. Heiar has been at LSU the last three seasons. He is credited with helping to develop Tremont Waters and Skylar Mays and he’s also known as a good recruiter. The Advocate reports that Bill Armstrong has been promoted to associate head coach and Kevin Nickelberry will be promoted from the support staff to the coaching staff.

McNeese men’s basketball coach Heath Schroyer will also serve as the interim athletics director. McNeese President Doctor Daryl Burckel says this will maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the department staff.

Former LSU star Jamal Adams wants out of New York as the All-pro safety has told the Jets he wants to be traded. The 24-year-old, who has been looking for a contract extension, said he’d like to go to Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, or Seattle. The Jets are in no rush to address Adams’ contract demands.

The House unanimously approves legislation sending a 250 dollar check to some essential workers who worked the early days of the pandemic. To qualify workers must earn under 50,000 a year.

A prior version had the limit at 70,000 a year but bill author Shreveport Representative Sam Jenkins says that just wasn’t fiscally feasible.

Ponchatoula Representative Bill Wheat ultimately supported the legislation but says it’s disappointing that the income limit was lowered.

Up to 50 million dollars in checks can be disbursed, with the potential for another 50 million if the need arises. Federal coronavirus relied aid will fund the program. 25-million dollars from a small business grant fund and another 25-million from a pot of money that’s set to go to local governments.

The player is remaining anonymous. In court documents he’s referred to as “John Doe” and is a resident of Alabama. He was suspended in February and it’s a year-long suspension. Stone says he cannon attend school, he’s lost his scholarship and she says this could have a long-lasting impact on the player’s life.

Kristina Supler is another attorney working on the case and she says the school’s actions are a due process violation and the message is clear: be fair.
