Authorities have arrested a suspect in the January shooting death of a Washington Parish teen and it’s the victim’s cousin.  Kevin Barnhart has the story.

Six people have been arrested in a human trafficking sting executed by north Louisiana law enforcement.  Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Davis says the arrests took place at an area hotel.

Three of those arrested were also hit with drug charges.  Authorities recovered marijuana, meth, ecstasy, a firearm, and a vehicle.  Davis says over the years the area has seen various arrests linked to prostitution, but the human trafficking factor takes the arrests to the next level.

Davis says further charges are possible and the investigation will continue.

Glad handing and hugs are likely on their way out at the Capitol this session as the threat of coronavirus has lawmakers reassessing the way they interact with each other and the public.

Monroe Senator Katrina Jackson says she’s keeping Purell and Lysol on her at all times, but says there needs to be an official policy on contact at the Capitol.

Governor Edwards announced this afternoon two more presumptive cases of coronavirus. All three of Louisiana’s cases are from the New Orleans area.

Many lawmakers were business as usual before Monday’s news of the state’s first case broke. New Orleans Representative Royce Duplessis says he shook a lot of hands earlier in the morning…

But Alexandria Representative Lance Harris says not everyone is afraid of a handshake.

A woman is dead and her boyfriend has been arrested in Iberia Parish. Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Col. Wendell Raborn says deputies were dispatched to the scene in reference to a possible homicide just before 10 PM Saturday night.

Cut 9 (12) “…the victim deceased.″

The manner of death has not been released and the victim has been identified as 38-year-old Stephanie Worley of New Iberia. The suspect has been identified as 59-year-old Luis D. Valdez.

Raborn says witnesses told investigators the couple had been fighting all day long, off and on.

Cut 10 (11) “…apprehend Mr. Valdez.”

Valdez is charged with second-degree murder.

Washington Parish Sheriff’s deputies make an arrest in the shooting death of 17-year-old Ja’Quarius Taylor.  Taylor was shot in the head three times in January and his body was found in a wooded area near the town of Angie.  Chief Deputy Mike Haley says their suspect is the victim’s cousin, 20-year-old Jo’Andre Dawson.

The crime was viewed by some as a potential hate crime.  Haley says they are uncertain of the exact motive that led to the killing.

Washington Parish criminal records do not show Dawson had any prior criminal history in the parish.  Haley says the family expected the suspect would be someone Taylor knew.

Seventeen people have now been tested for COVID-19 in Louisiana with one presumptive case being a resident in Jefferson Parish. Those coronavirus fears have many lawmakers at the Capitol avoiding the customary hugs and glad-handing, but Alexandria Representative Lance Harris says not everyone is afraid of a handshake.

LSU Senior guard Skylar Mays has been named to the coaches’ first-team All-SEC team. Mays leads the Tigers in scoring averaging 17 points a game and second on the team in assists. Mays has also been named Scholar-Athlete of the Year as he owns a 3.9 GPA while studying to be a doctor. LSU’s Trendon Watford is on the All-SEC Freshman team. Watford averages 14 points and seven rebounds a game.

The Tigers leave tomorrow for the SEC Tournament in Nashville, even though they will not play until Friday night against either Vanderbilt, Arkansas or South Carolina. The league office says they expect to play the tourney as scheduled despite concerns over the coronavirus.

The SWAC Tournament starts today with games at campus sites. Southern is a two-seed and will host Alabama State. Gambling is the sixth seed and the Tigers are at Texas Southern.

The Cajuns season ended last night with an 82-81 loss to Georgia Southern in the second round of the Sun Belt Tournament.

Louisiana Tech is the three-seed in the Conference USA Tournament and the Bulldogs will play either Marshall or UTEP in Frisco, Texas on Thursday. The Thundering Herd have won six of their last eight, while the Miners have won four in a row. Marshall and UTEP play on Wednesday.

In college baseball…ULM hosts eighth-ranked Ole Miss for a two-game mid-week series at Warhawk Field. The Rebels, who open SEC play against LSU this weekend, is 14-and-1 on the season. The Warhawks are also playing well, as they are 12-and-3. First pitch tonight is at six o’clock.

McNeese lost two of three to ULM this past weekend. Tonight, the Cowboys host the Ragin Cajuns. Before the game, they’ll rename the Pokes bullpen after the late Tony Robichaux, who coached for both teams.

Also tonight, Louisiana Tech hosts Southeastern Louisiana at Ruston High, Nicholls hosts Mississippi Valley, Northwestern State is at Grambling.

Authorities say an 18-year-old Pineville High School student has died in a fatal crash that happened in Avoyelles Parish on Sunday. Corry Barbay was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Jefferson Parish resident is the state’s first coronavirus case and that individual is now hospitalized at a V-A medical center in New Orleans. So far the state has tested 15 individuals and there’s only been one presumptive case.
