The number of coronavirus cases in Louisiana now stands at six as state health officials confirmed three new presumptive positive cases last night. So far all six cases are from the New Orleans area. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says one of the patients is in the I-C-U.

Assistant state health officer, Doctor Joseph Kanter, says while most of the public is concerned with the coronavirus, the state continues to suffer from an intense flu season as nearly 10-percent of all doctor visits are because of flu-like symptoms. Kanter says with more people taking action to prevent the spread of coronavirus, they are also helping in the fight against the spread of the flu.

The three new cases are residents of Orleans Parish and so far all of the patients are from the New Orleans area. That’s led New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell to cancel public events this weekend, including St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s parades. LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron announces freshman quarterback Peter Parrish has been indefinitely suspended from the team for a violation of team rules. Parrish is battling to be the Tigers number two quarterback in 2020, but now freshmen T-J Finley and Max Johnson have a leg up in that battle. Orgeron has also hired former defensive tackle Bennie Logan from Coushatta as a defensive analyst and former receiver Eddie Kennison is the new director of player development.

In college basketball, Southern advanced to the semi-finals of the SWAC Tournament with a 67-53 win over Alabama State. The Jaguars will face Texas Southern in the semis, who eliminated Grambling State 75-62.

The Southland Tournament gets underway today in Katy, Texas as Northwestern State hosts Corpus Christi. McNeese will face Lamar. The Cowboys just beat the Cardinals on Saturday to get int he tourney. Nicholls will play tomorrow night.

The Pelicans continue their four-game road trip tonight as they visit Sacramento. The two teams share identical records and are 3.5 games back of Memphis for the final playoff spot in the West. The tip-off is at 9:30.

In college baseball action last night…eighth-ranked Ole Miss doubled up ULM six to three. The same two teams today at 4 PM. The Cajuns blanked McNeese seven to nothing. Louisiana Tech trounced Southeastern Louisiana 14 to 3. Northwestern State upended Grambling four to one, Nicholls blanked Mississippi Valley 14 to 0 and 20th ranked Tulane outscored Lamar 14-12.

The governor confirmed three new presumptive coronavirus cases last night, bringing the state’s total to six. The three new patients live in Orleans Parish. The six known cases in Louisiana are from the New Orleans area, which prompted Mayor LaToya Cantrell to cancel all parades and second lines scheduled for this weekend.

Festival season is right around the corner, could we see more cancellations or postponements? Kevin Barnhart has more…

Houma Representative Beryl Amedee files a series of vaccine-related bills as the Capitol copes with the growing threat of coronavirus.

Amedee says one of the bills mandates healthcare providers provide patients more information about what is in their vaccines, and potential side effects those vaccines may have.

The bill would also require providers inform patients how effective the vaccine is.

Another of her bills would prevent employers from requiring their workforce be vaccinated. She says this legislation was inspired by complaints she heard from nursing students.

While the focus of many may be on coronavirus, Louisiana is still dealing with an intense flu season. Assistant state health officer Dr. Joseph Kanter says the seasonal flu is should still not be taken lightly as it can be devastating for both age extremes in both younger and older people.

Some of the biggest festivals in the nation are getting cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus. Could we see that here in Louisiana?  State Immunization Director Dr. Frank Welch says they are monitoring the situation and working with event organizers.

Southern California’s Coachella and Stagecoach are moving the events to October.  Austin’s South by Southwest and Miami’s Ultra Music Festival will not be holding events in 2020.

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival takes place over the course of ten days and welcomes around 400,000 visitors each year.  Welch says COVID-19 is not going to spread well in an open-air environment.

Welch says COVID-19 still has the ability to spread at festivals if people are greeting each other with hugs, kisses or handshakes, but also sharing cups, glasses, and utensils.  There are other steps to take to avoid contamination.

Coronavirus fears have many lawmakers at the Capitol avoiding the customary hugs and glad-handing.  Many lawmakers were business as usual before Monday’s news of the state’s first case broke. New Orleans Representative Royce Duplessis says he shook a lot of hands earlier in the morning…

Governor Edwards announced this afternoon two more presumptive cases of coronavirus, bringing the grand total to three in Louisiana.  All are in the New Orleans area.
Six people have been arrested in a human trafficking sting executed by north Louisiana law enforcement.  Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Davis says the arrests took place at an area hotel.

Three of those arrested were also hit with drug charges.

 

Washington Parish Sheriff’s deputies make an arrest in the shooting death of 17-year-old Ja’Quarius Taylor.  Taylor was shot in the head three times in January and his body was found in a wooded area near the town of Angie.  Chief Deputy Mike Haley says their suspect is the victim’s cousin, 20-year-old Jo’Andre Dawson. Haley says the family expected the suspect would be someone Taylor knew.

Bond is set at $800,000.
A New Iberia woman is dead and her boyfriend, 59-year-old Luis D. Valdez is charged with second degree murder. Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Col. Wendell Raborn says deputies were dispatched to the scene in reference to a possible homicide just before 10 PM Saturday night.

The manner of death has not been released and the victim has been identified as 38-year-old Stephanie Worley.

The state added two new presumptive cases of coronavirus today, and lawmakers are mentally preparing to put aside their natural inclination to glad hand and kiss babies for the next few months as they hunker down in Baton Rouge for the 2020 session. Before giving his opening address to the Legislature the Governor avoided handing out his customary handshakes. Alexandria Representative Lance Harris noticed that, but says he won’t be deterred by COVID-19…

Several other lawmakers interviewed said they would begin refraining from their usual handshakes. Monroe Senator Katrina Jackson says she’s keeping Purell and Lysol on her at all times, and wants there to be a universally agreed upon contact policy at the Capitol…

Louisiana’s two newest presumptive coronavirus patients are being treated at two New Orleans area hospitals, Touro and University Medical Center. That brings the state’s total up to three, with all cases being centered on the New Orleans area.

Authorities have arrested a suspect in the January shooting death of a Washington Parish teen and it’s the victim’s cousin.  Kevin Barnhart has the story.

A human trafficking bust in Bossier Parish leads to six arrests and the seizures of drugs and weapons.  Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Davis says the arrests took place at area hotels, and those arrested could be looking at more charges as the investigation continues.

A woman is dead and her boyfriend has been arrested in Iberia Parish. Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Col. Wendell Raborn says witnesses told investigators the couple had been fighting all day long, off and on before the 10PM Saturday night killing at the camper trailer they both lived in.

LSU Senior guard Skylar Mays has been named first-team All-SEC by the coaches. Mays leads the Tigers in scoring at 17 points per game. The Baton Rouge product is also the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year as he owns a 3.9 GPA. LSU’s Trendon Watford is on the All-SEC Freshman team. Watford averages 14 points and seven rebounds a game. The Tigers will play Friday night in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament in Nashville against either Vanderbilt, Arkansas or South Carolina.

The SWAC Tournament is tonight with games on campuses. Southern is a two-seed and will host Alabama State. Gambling is the sixth seed and the Tigers are at Texas Southern.

The Cajuns season ended last night with an 82-81 loss at Georgia Southern in the second round of the Sun Belt Tournament.

La Tech’s Kaleb Kedoux has been named as the Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year. The redshirt junior is averaging nearly 12 points off the bench.

Marsh Madness continues tonight in Lake Charles with boys basketball semi-final action. Tonight is the Class C semi-final contest between Simpson and Hicks.

In select action in Division Four…St. Mary’s Natchitoches is at Crescent City, while Hamilton Christian hosts Calvary Baptist. In Division Three. Lafayette Christian hosts Episcopal and in Division Two, St. Louis Catholic is at St. Thomas More.

In college baseball…ULM hosts eighth-ranked Ole Miss for a two-game mid-week series at Warhawk Field. The Rebels, who open SEC play against LSU this weekend, is 14-and-1 on the season. The Warhawks are also playing well, as they are 12-and-3. The first pitch tonight is at six o’clock.

McNeese lost two of three to ULM this past weekend. Tonight, the Cowboys host the Ragin Cajuns. Before the game, they’ll rename the Pokes bullpen after the late Tony Robichaux, who coached for both teams.

Also tonight, Louisiana Tech hosts Southeastern Louisiana at Ruston High, Nicholls hosts Mississippi Valley, Northwestern State is at Grambling.

Bill Davis says over the years the area has seen various arrests linked to prostitution, but the human trafficking factor takes the arrests to the next level.
