Ed Orgeron has been named AP SEC Coach of the Year. For that he receives a 25-thousand dollar bonus. The A-P unanimously selected Burrow as the S-E-C’s offensive player of the year and cornerback Derek Stingley Junior has been named freshman of the year.
Louisiana Tech junior cornerback Amik (Uh-meek) Robertson has been named to the Football Writers Association of America All-America Team. The Thibodaux native leads the nation in 19 forced incompletions.

The Saints will spend this week trying to rebound from Sunday’s wild loss to the 49ers. Coach Sean Payton said on his radio show last night that during his visit to Whole Foods a meat department employee asked why he went for a two-point conversion in the first quarter, Payton said his response was why don’t you worry about your meat, because it doesn’t look good. New Orleans next game is Monday night against the Colts.
In Monday night football last night, the Eagles defeated the Giants 23-17 in overtime. Eli Manning started his first game since week two and threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort.
Despite 31 points from Brandon Ingram, the Pelicans lost to the Pistons 105 to 103 last night. Derrick Rose hit a jumper at the buzzer to beat New Orleans on its home floor. Rose finished with 21 points.
Tonight in college basketball…ULM hosts Grambling. The Warhawks have won 14 consecutive regular-season non-conference home games.
McNeese is also home tonight to take on University of Missouri Kansas City. The Cowboys are averaging 81 points a game.

Advocates are pushing the upcomming class of lawmakers to build on the 2017 Criminal Justice Reform by taking on sentencing reform for life without parole. Matt Doyle has more.

Impeachment proceedings continue In the House Judiciary Committee today.  Following 7.5 hours of action, Judiciary Committee member and Benton Congressman Mike Johnson spoke during yesterday’s hearing saying they’ve been operating under haphazardly drawn special parameters for the hearings.

New Orleans Congressman Cedric Richmond also sits on the committee and pressed staff attorneys on the basis that the President used foreign aid to Ukraine as leverage to entice that country’s government into investigating a political rival.

Johnson says this is not the way to impeach an American President and that the American people see the proceedings as a sham.

The Heisman Trophy finalists are now official and Joe Burrow is one step closer to being only the second LSU player to accomplish the feat. The other being Billy Cannon, 60 years ago. USA Today LSU writer and Heisman voter Glenn Guilbeau says the win appears to be a lock for Burrow.

While the Crimson Tide had hopes of getting the trophy through much of the season, Guilbeau believes Bama QB Tua Tagovailoa’s injury has had no impact on Burrow’s chances of securing the Heisman.

Because of LSU’s schedule, multiple wins over top ten teams, and Burrow’s consistent performance, Guilbeau believes it is a huge gap between Burrow and any other contenders for the trophy.

Other finalists include Sooners’ QB Jalen Hurts and Buckeyes’ defensive end Chase Young and quarterback Justin Fields.  The trophy presentation takes place this Saturday in New York City.

The US Department of Justice awards jurisdictions in the Western District of Louisiana a million dollars to help boost crime-fighting efforts in cities and parishes across the region.

The DOJ handed out 376 million dollars nationwide and Western District United States Attorney David Joseph says a number of municipalities applied to get a boost to their most successful programs.

The City of Shreveport was the biggest recipient, bringing in 127,000 dollars, followed by the Rapides and Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Offices at 82,000 and 72,000 dollars respectively.

Joseph says these grants are a recognition by the feds that certain crime-fighting programs in a jurisdiction have established a provable record of success.

Louisiana was named the state with the most violent crime in the nation per capita according to FBI crime stats. Joseph says that makes us particularly likely to win these kinds of grants.

Louisiana State Police arrest a man in New Orleans after he allegedly aggressively brandished a sword towards another man during an argument. The incident happened Saturday and Troopers have charged 42-year-old Travis Fisher with aggravated assault.
