Quarterback Joe Burrow delivered a memorable and tearful Heisman Trophy acceptance speech on Saturday night after he became only second Tiger to win the prestigious award. He started his speech by thanking his offensive line and ended it by thanking Coach Ed Orgeron who showed faith in him

Burrow won the Heisman by a landslide over three other finalists. It’s the largest margin of victory in the 85-year history of the award. He also received the highest percentage of first-place votes and the highest percentage of possible points, 94-percentage. After his speech, Burrow said it’s a dream come true

China and the US agree to a “phase one” trade deal that will see some tariffs on China canceled, and in exchange the People’s Republic agrees to purchase tens of billions dollars of US agricultural goods.

US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue was giving a commencement address at Southern as the news broke. He celebrated the news…

The President estimates China could purchase around 50 billion dollars of additional ag products as a result.

Purdue says the agreement will be a shot in the arm to American growers.

Two articles, one focusing on abuse of power related to a phone call where President Trump is accused of holding up federal aid to Ukraine in exchange for dirt on a political rival and the other on obstruction for refusal to cooperate in the impeachment inquiry, are heading to the floor. Johnson says impeachment has been the goal of Democrats since day one of the Trump administration.

Johnson says the impeachment proceedings boil down to one thing: Democrats just don’t like anything about Trump.

LSU Law Dean Thomas Galligan takes over as interim school President while the institution conducts a national search to replace former President F. King Alexander, who left for Oregon State.

Council for a Better Louisiana President Barry Erwin says the search may be national, but we’re starting to hear some prominent local names as early favorites.

The vote is expected to be a landslide in favor of Burrow, who has set numerous LSU and SEC records.  In 2005, Reggie Bush received nearly 92-percent of the first place votes, we’ll see if Burrow can come close to that or possibly top it. If selected, Burrow joins the late Billy Cannon as the only two players from LSU to win the Heisman.

King Alexander is stepping down.   Alexander has been selected to be the next president of Oregon State University.  Council for a Better Louisiana President Barry Erwin says Alexander had to make some big decisions in handling the school’s athletics.

Alexander’s last day is December 31st and the institution has named Dean of the LSU Law Center Thomas Galligan as the interim successor.

Equipment to stabilize the partially collapsed Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans will be arriving next week. Engineers are close to finalizing plans for the stabilization. New Orleans Fire Chief Tim McConnell says the safety of the crews is the number one priority throughout the process of trying to recover the remains of those killed in the October collapse, so stabilization is crucial.

Saints Quarterback Drew Brees is dealing with a right elbow injury, but Brees says he’ll play on Monday against the Colts. Safety Vonn Bell, linebacker Kiko Alonso, cornerback Patrick Robinson and guard Andrus Peat did not practice, while defensive end Cam Jordan and left tackle Terron Armstead were limited.

It was blowout city at the Superdome yesterday on the first day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Prep Classic. It all started with Ouachita Christian crushing Catholic Pointe Coupee 67-22. Eagles Q-B Hunter Herring ha seven total touchdowns and 335 total yards.
In the Class Two-A Championship game, Ferriday won its first state championship since 1959 beating Many 56-17. Trojans Quarterback Kobe Dillon threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more.
And in the final game of the day, St. James won its first state championship since 1979 as the Wildcats devoured Jennings 51-14.

So today at the Dome, the action kicks-off again at noon as Oak Grove battles White Castle for the one-a title. Warren Easton faces Karr in the 4A championship. The Cougars have won three straight titles and beat Warren Easton last year in the state title game, And in the 5A championship Destrehan will try to beat unbeated Acadiana. Law enforcement agencies are stepping up patrols through New Year’s Day with the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission executive director Lisa Freeman says the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is an effective one, with a dipping trend in drunk driving fatalities on the national level as well as on the state level.

Nationally, 285 people were killed over the holidays in drunk driving-related crashes in 2018.

The House Judiciary Committee votes to send two Articles of Impeachment to the House floor for an Impeachment vote sometime next week.

Schools in Joe Burrow’s hometown of Athens, Ohio are celebrating purple and gold day today ahead of what is a near-lock for the QB to secure the Heisman Trophy Saturday night. Travis Brand, owner of the formerly Burrow frequented Gigi’s Country Kitchen back in Athens says the town is Ohio State country, but this year you could find of Purple and Gold peppered throughout the community.

Former Saints linebacker and member of the famed Dome Patrol, Vaughn Johnson has died at the age of 57. He died at his home in North Carolina from kidney disease.

Ouachita Christian beats Catholic High of Pointe Coupee 67-22 in the Division Four title game. Ouachita QB Hunter Herring rushed for four touchdowns and passed for three, while Will Fitzhugh had two picks, returning one for a touchdown.

The Two-A championship between Many and Ferriday is currently underway.

Tonight, St. James looks to complete an undefeated season by taking on 23rd seeded Jennings.
Top-seeded Acadiana also goes after an undefeated season tomorrow as the Wrecking Rams will play Destrehan at 7 PM. Also tomorrow, it’s the One-A championship game, Oak Grove versus White Castle and the Four-A title game is a rematch of last year’s championship game, Karr versus Warren Easton.

The Tigers cleaned up at the Home Depot College Football Awards last night, Burrow won the Davey O’ Brien Award, Ja’Marr Chase was named the top receiver, and safety Grant Delpit, projected to be a 1st round pick in next years draft, was named the top defensive back.

The 6-19 Pelicans are in Philly tonight to take on the 19-7 76ers. It’s JJ Reddick’s first trip back to his old team this year.  He’s scoring 16 points a game on 45 percent shooting from three this year, several ticks above his career average.
