Over 40 students at two schools in Tangipahoa Parish have been arrested for fighting. 32 students are facing a disturbing the peace charge at Independence High School for fights that happened Tuesday and yesterday. Eight more students at Ponchatoula High School are facing the same charge and possible penalties include expulsion.

Louisiana will invest nearly six-million dollars into a new center for bariatric and metabolic surgery at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. A sheriff’s deputy and teacher in Livingston Parish are in jail on child porn charges. 44-year-old Dennis Perkins and 34-year-old Cynthia Perkins, a teacher at Westside Junior High in Walker, are each facing 60 counts of producing child pornography and two counts of first-degree rape. Dennis Perkins has also been booked on two counts of video voyeurism.

That brings LSU’s 2020 class to 22 commitments and is rated third in the country behind number one Clemson and number two Alabama. The class also features three five-star prospects, Gilbert, California cornerback Elias Ricks and wide receiver Rakim Jarrett.

Pennington Biomedical Research Center is adding a metabolic surgery center that will allow the world-renown facility to research new tools in the fight against obesity.

Pennington Biomedical Executive Director John Kirwan says the new building will help them research the science behind a mystery involving patients who receive lap band surgery.

The facility will also offer bariatric and metabolic surgery on-site for patients.

Kirwan says they have some thoughts as to why bariatric patients see a reversal of their diabetes, and research at the new facility may help confirm those suspicions.

The facility will add 55 new direct jobs, and generate an estimated 100 million in economic activity over its first four years. Kirwan says it will also attract world-class professionals to Baton Rouge.

Parents who have lost children to hazing are pushing lawmakers to support the End All Hazing Act and Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy was the first the back the measure in the Senate. The House bill requires schools to publicly share information about student organizations that have been disciplined for hazing. Cassidy says schools must be clear about what takes place on campus.

This week Cassidy and lawmakers met with parents who have buried their children because of hazing, one of those parents was Steve Gruver the father of Maxwell Gruver who was killed at LSU in 2017. Cassidy not only wants transparency on campuses he’s hoping the End All Hazing Act will have even a greater effect.

The bill’s intent is very similar to the College Transparency Act that Cassidy sponsored. It requires colleges and Universities to reports accurate information for example enrollment, financial aid, and post-collegiate outcomes. Cassidy says this bill also holds schools accountable.

A woman claims Carencro Police broke the wrist of her autistic 28-year-old son Derrick and has filed a lawsuit against the department.  Police Chief David Anderson says Cynthia Moody contacted the department after an officer had an altercation with her son.

The Poor People’s Campaign is touring through Louisiana this week, aiming to mobilize more activists to join their national push for elected leaders to address poverty and adopt their “Moral Agenda”. Campaign speakers have ruffled feathers at the State Capitol by accusing lawmakers of rejecting moral legislation like a minimum wage increase. Louisiana Tri-Chair Omari Ho-Sang says the poor people they’re mobilizing appreciate the candor.

Police are hunting for a white vehicle that is suspected to have struck and killed a Monroe teenager in a hit and run incident in Monroe Tuesday evening. Monroe Police Detective Reggie Brown says the tragedy was compounded by the driver not even stopping to try and help the young girl he just hit. He says it shouldn’t matter what condition the driver may have been in.

Saints Quarterback Drew Brees says he plans to play this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Brees told reporters that he threw a lot today and feels good, but he still needs to make sure he feels like himself all week.

There were some positives in last night’s season-opening loss to the Raptors as Toronto topped New Orleans 130-122. Brandon Ingram looked good in his first regular-season game with the Pels, 22 points, five rebounds, and five assists. New Orleans bench outscored Toronto 56 to 23, but Jrue Holiday had just 13 points and the Pels had 19 turnovers. New Orleans home opener is Friday against Dallas.

Tonight in Houston, the Astros need to win to even up the World Series at one game apiece. Rough game for former LSU star Alex Bregman in Game One as he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts as the Nationals held on a for five to four victory. Tonight’s pitching matchup is a good one, Justin Verlander for the Stros and the Nats will have Stephen Strasburg toe the rubber.

LSU continues preparations today for Auburn, who they will face on Saturday at 2:30. In two and a half weeks the Tigers will tangle with top-ranked Alabama, but Bayou Bengals safety Jacoby Stevens says they know they can’t look past Auburn…

LSU Coach Ed Orgeron said today on the SEC teleconference that wide receiver Terrace Marshall Junior will be ready to go for this Saturday. Marshall has missed three games since breaking his foot versus Vandy.

Two of Louisiana Tech’s best receivers are expected to play this Saturday against UTEP. Redshirt junior Adrian Hardy missed the Southern Miss game, while Isaiah Graham only played in a few plays. But Coach Skip Holtz says if everything goes ok this week, they should be able play against the Miners.
