Pennington Biomedical Research Center is adding a metabolic surgery center that will allow the world-renown facility to research new tools in the fight against obesity.
Pennington Biomedical Executive Director John Kirwan says the new building will help them research the science behind a mystery involving patients who receive lap band surgery.

The facility will also offer bariatric and metabolic surgery on-site for patients.
Kirwan says they have some thoughts as to why bariatric patients see a reversal of their diabetes, and research at the new facility may help confirm those suspicions.

The facility will add 55 new direct jobs, and generate an estimated 100 million in economic activity over its first four years. Kirwan says it will also attract world-class professionals to Baton Rouge.

The center will be headed by the Cleveland Clinic’s obesity surgery expert Dr. Phil Schauer.

Law enforcement and health officials be accepting unused medications for safe disposal, as well as vape products, as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, scheduled for Saturday. Assistant State Health Officer Dr. Joseph Kanter says there will be no questions asked as to the type of vape products being turned in.

Kanter says a recent outbreak of lung disease believed to be linked to vaping sees a majority of cases linked to vape products containing THC, but officials have yet to pinpoint what exactly is causing the ailments.

Drew Brees says the plan is for him to suit up and play Sunday in the Dome against the Cardinals, potentially his first game action since injuring his hand against the Rams week two.
The QB says he’ll track his progress in practice this week, but if he feels ready, Sean Payton will play him. It’s an earlier than expected return, but Brees says he’s close enough with the help of some equipment.

Parents who have lost children to hazing are pushing lawmakers to support the End All Hazing Act and Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy was the first the back the measure in the Senate. The House bill requires schools to publicly share information about student organizations that have been disciplined for hazing. Cassidy says schools must be clear about what takes place on campus.

This week Cassidy and lawmakers met with parents who have buried their children because of hazing, one of those parents was Steve Gruver the father of Maxwell Gruver who was killed at LSU in 2017. Cassidy not only wants transparency on campuses he’s hoping the End All Hazing Act will have even a greater effect.

The bill’s intent is very similar to the College Transparency Act that Cassidy sponsored. It requires colleges and Universities to reports accurate information for example enrollment, financial aid, and post-collegiate outcomes. Cassidy says this bill also holds schools accountable.

The End All Hazing Act also requires institutions to report any allegation of hazing that involves serious bodily injury or risk of injury to a student to law enforcement within 72 hours.
