Governor John Bel Edwards spoke at an interfaith ceremony celebrating the life of former Governor Kathleen Blanco at St. Joseph Cathedral in Baton Rouge today. Edwards says Blanco’s love for all people made her a special leader, calling her authentic, consistent, and sincere.

Blanco is now at the State Capitol one last time as she lies in state in the rotunda, The public as they wait to pay their respects were able to view various mementos from her life that include the red suit she wore during her inauguration and a letter she received from President George W Bush when he learn of her incurable cancer diagnosis in December of 2017.

 

The state’s most powerful business lobby, The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, endorses both Republican contenders in the Governor’s race.  Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says getting a LABI endorsement doesn’t necessarily directly influence many voters, but it does open a lot of fundraising avenues for a pro-business candidate.

Legal Director Katie Schwartzmann says the office has a policy of unconstitutionally detaining Hispanic or Hispanic appearing people for immigration review by ICE, regardless of their citizenship status.

In August of 2018 Ramon Torres was arrested on a DUI charge. Schwartzmann says Ascension court policy dictates he be released the morning immediately after.

Schwartzmann says Torres owned a home and worked in Baton Rouge and had several items on him at the time of his arrest that demonstrated his citizenship.

Torres says his co-workers and employer later sent additional documentation including a birth certificate, but the office continued to detain him.

The complaint is seeking an end to the office’s policy and demanding the court provide punitive damages to Mr. Torres. It also alleges that this is not just a onetime incident…

Sheriff Bobby Webre responded to the suit, saying “I dispute these press claims by ACLU lawyers and will offer a rigorous defense in court.”

It’s a change of pace for the political powerhouse that did not endorse in the primary last year. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says securing LABI endorsements is vital for a Republican candidate.

The primary will be held on October 12th. If no candidate cracks 50 percent of the vote a run-off will be held on November 16th.

Pinsonat says the biggest question is whether or not the early endorsements signal the group’s interest in a more active role in the race. Pinsonat says LABI has little to lose from going hard after the Governor.

New evidence leads to the arrest of a man fifteen years after Cheryl Williams went missing in Lincoln Parish.

Lincoln Parish Lt. J.D. Driscol says the missing persons never ended, but it did ramp up earlier this year when Lincoln Deputies began working with State Police to solve the case.

That led to the arrest of now 70-year-old Lonnie Frazier of Ruston on Second Degree Murder charges.

Frazier was a person of interest in the disappearance back in 2004, but authorities say they never had enough evidence on hand to lock him up. Driscol says that didn’t stop deputies from continuing the investigation.

Driscol says the arrest has been a relief to Williams’ family, who’ve waited more than a decade to see justice served.

The public will have an opportunity to pay their respect today to Former Governor Kathleen Blanco, who will lie in state starting at 1 pm at the Capitol Rotunda.  Commissioner of Higher Ed and former Blanco Aide Kim Hunter Reed says the viewing will give the public an opportunity to learn more about who Kathleen Blanco was, and what was most important to her.

A five-year-old was found with a bag of cocaine and two bags of crack at a Slidell school yesterday and now two adults are under arrest as a result.  Detective Daniel Seuzeneau says a teacher spotted the kid with a bag of white powder and called a resource officer over to investigate. That’s when they discovered the Kindergartner was holding narcotics, but…

An Interfaith service is underway at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Downtown Baton Rouge honoring former Governor Kathleen Blanco. After the service Blanco’s casket will be escorted by Louisiana State Police to the state Capitol. Her former protective service detail will carry her casket up the front steps which will be lined by members of her cabinet and staff. She will then lie in state for public viewing from 1 until 6pm.

Commissioner of Higher Ed and former Blanco Aide Kim Hunter Reed says they’ve received interest in the public ceremonies from people young and old from across the state.

Governor Edwards has ordered flags be flown at half-staff until Blanco’s funeral ends Saturday night in Lafayette.

Instead of choosing one of the two major Republicans running for Governor against incumbent Democratic Governor Edwards, the business lobbying group LABI (LA-BEE) is supporting both Congressman Ralph Abraham and businessman Eddie Rispone. In 2015 the LABI did not endorse anyone in the primary because their candidate lost to Edwards in the runoff.

After a five-year-old was found with a bag of cocaine and two bags of crack at a Slidell school Wednesday, two adults are under arrest. Detective Daniel Seuzeneau says they searched the child’s home and arrested 51-year-old Ellis Cousin and 23-year-old Angelica Stanley. They are charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute, Paraphernalia, and Cruelty to a Juvenile. Suezeneau says thankfully no one was exposed to the bag’s contents.

An interfaith service honoring former Governor Kathleen Blanco is being airing on Louisiana Public Broadcasting. The service is being held at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. Diocese of Baton Rouge spokesperson Deacon Dan Borne (Bor-nay).

The service will also be streamed on the CatholicLifeTV.org.

After the service Blanco’s casket will be taken a short distance to the Louisiana State Capitol where she’ll lie in state from 1 until 6 PM. Higher Ed Commissioner and former Blanco aide Kim Hunter Reed says the state’s only female governor is getting a fitting send-off…

The state will remember former Governor Kathleen Blanco today, first with an interfaith gathering at St. Joseph Cathedral beginning at 9:30.  Diocese of Baton Rouge spokesperson Deacon Dan Borne (Bor-nay) says about half of the cathedral is reserved for family but the public seating will likely fill fast.

Beginning at 1pm the public is invited to pay their respects to the former governor at the State Capitol Rotunda, as she lies in state. Commissioner of Higher Ed and former Blanco Aide Kim Hunter Reed says there the public can learn more about who Blanco was, and what was most important to her.

A 70-year old Ruston man is behind bars now after a joint investigation with Louisiana State Police and the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office solves a 2004 cold case. Lonnie Frazier Jr. was a person of interest in the missing person investigation of Cheryl Williams but there was insufficient evidence. But now they’ve found enough evidence to book Frazier for second degree murder. He was arrested Wednesday and is being held in the Lincoln Parish Detention Center on a bond of one-million dollars.

The Eastbank Little League team from River Ridge is two wins away from competing in the Little League World Series championship game.
