Deggs was an assistant coach at U-L Lafayette from 2012-to-2014 under the late Cajuns head coach Tony Robichaux. Deggs says Coach Robe would want him to take this challenge…

In college football, Sun Belt coaches pick the Ragin Cajuns to repeat as West Champions ahead of Arkansas State. ULM is picked to finish in third place. Appalachian State is the preseason favorite in the East.

Southland Coaches and S-I-Ds pick Nicholls to repeat as league champs. McNeese is picked to finish sixth, S-L-U eighth and Northwestern 10th place.

LSU receiver Justin Jefferson is on the Biletnikoff Award watch list after leading the Tigers with 54 catches last season. Louisiana Tech’s Adrian Hardy is also on the Biletnikoff Watch List. The award goes to the best receiver in college football. Hardy caught 75 passes for 1,145 yards and six touchdowns.

In NBA news…former LSU star Naz Reid has signed a four-year contract with Minnesota. Reid went undrafted and was expected to sign a two-way deal with the Timberwolves, but he performed so well in the Summer League that Reid earned himself a full-time spot on the roster.

Former Pelican Cheick Diallo has reportedly signed a two-year deal with the Suns. Diallo averaged six points and five rebounds in 64 games in New Orleans last season.

And there’s a report that former Hornet, Chris Paul, will start the season in Oklahoma City as there doesn’t seem to be much interest in the 34-year-old who has three years left on his contract that pays him 125-million dollars.

Lafayette Representative and Chairwoman of the House Education Committee, Nancy Landry, has resigned from the state legislature to become the chief of staff for Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin. Landry was term-limited and says her new job is a good way to continue to serve the people of Louisiana.

Jefferson Economic Development Commission President Jerry Bologna says the planned launch is set for 2020 and are currently looking to finalize a facility location to accommodate local distribution and e-commerce.

A teenager who was riding in the back of a pickup truck in Jefferson Davis Parish is dead after an accident on Gro Racca Road. The victim, 18-year-old Adam Sandhoff of Iowa was legally allowed to ride in that pickup bed, but State Police Trooper Derek Senegal says it’s not a safe choice, and for some younger people, it is in fact illegal.

The driver of the truck is underage so their name will not be released, but they have been cited with careless operation and no driver’s license.

It took a six-person jury about 45 minutes of deliberations to convict Naquin of the felony charge for his role in the alcohol-related hazing death of Gruver, who had a blood-alcohol level of 0.495-percent. The UL-Lafayette Baseball program introduced former assistant Matt Deggs as its new head coach today. Deggs replaces the late Tony Robichaux, who died from a heart attack earlier this month. Deggs spent three seasons as an assistant to Robichaux from 2012 to 2014. Sam Houston State hired Deggs as its head coach in 2014 and he led the Bearkats to a Super Regional Series appearance and back-to-back Southland Conference championships.

Southland Conference head coaches and sports information directors have picked Nicholls to repeat as league champions. The Colonels have eleven players on the preseason all-conference teams. McNeese is picked to finish sixth, Southeastern Louisiana eighth and Northwestern in 10th place.

It took jurors less than an hour to convict Former LSU fraternity member Matthew Naquin of Negligent Homicide in the hazing death of Maxwell Gruver in 2017. Naquin’s attorney John McLindon felt strongly about it…

To start, Senator Bill Cassidy says they’re proposing means tested flood insurance voucher to help low- and middle-income residents afford their rates…

A Louisiana institution, Hubig’s pies, announced today they plan to relaunch production in 2020. The famous fruit pies have been unavailable since a fire destroyed their New Orleans building. Hubig’s says they will build a one-point-three million dollar facility in Jefferson Parish.
