Baton Rouge Police say the 18 year old son of Alton Sterling has been arrested and faces a charge of first degree rape.  Cameron Sterling is accused of taking a child into a bedroom, locking the door, then raping the 8 year old boy he was babysitting last weekend.  Cameron Sterling’s father, Alton Sterling was shot to death by police in 2016, triggering nationwide protests.

 

The Bayou State can expect heavy rainfall as a storm system whipped up in Texas and Oklahoma moves into the state. Paired with a cold front one to two inches of rain is likely to land across Louisiana. State Climatologist Barry Keim says in some areas of Louisiana the rain could be even more intense…

According to the CDC, Louisiana is among the states with the highest levels of flu activity so far this season.  Louisiana Department of Health is conducting a special one-day, multi-location flu shot promotion, throughout Louisiana from 2 until 6:30 this afternoon. The state saw more than 15,000 hospitalizations last year.   LDH Immunization director Dr. Frank Welch says Louisiana is starting to see a rise in cases, jumping above the regional baseline.

And Welch says if you have cold symptoms or have a fever greater than 100.3 degrees, stay away from others until you have not had a fever for 24 hours.

There are reports federal and local investigators are looking allegations former St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain sexually abused at least four teenagers. According to WWL-TV, the investigation is over a year long and the abuse may have occurred over decades. No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed in the case.

LDH Immunization director Dr. Frank Welch says a similar event was conducted last January during the middle of a rough flu season that saw more than 1,600 deaths in Louisiana.

The legislative auditor’s office says they can’t determine if State Police properly spent two-point-four-million dollars policing the New Orleans French Quarter last year. But the Department of Public Safety disagrees with the report. The agency says two-point-four million in other funding was used to cover their French Quarter policing costs until funding designated for that area’s policing became available.

The FBI and local prosecutors are reportedly investigating allegations that former St. Tammany Sheriff Jack Strain sexually abused teenagers. Two of Strain’s former top aids already face federal charges in an alleged kicked scheme involving a work release program. A source says an investigation is now looking to see if Strain awarded these two men a contract in an effort to keep them quiet about the alleged sexual abuse.

The Pels get a little bit of break as they don’t play again until Sunday against Miami.

In college basketball, LSU had a 15-point lead in the second half, but lost to 24th ranked Houston 82-76. Also, 11th ranked Texas Tech 79-44 over Northwestern State and Ole Miss defeated Southeastern Louisiana 69-57.

If the Saints win on Monday night against Carolina, New Orleans will clinch a first-round playoff bye. They can also secure a first-round bye if the Bears lose to the Packers on Sunday.

Veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall will not be with the Saints for their playoff run. He was released by the team after not playing in a game, since he was signed last month. Tight end Erik Swoope takes Marshall’s place on the roster. Swoope was released by the Colts after catching eight passes this season.

UL-Lafayette and Tulane have arrived in Orlando for their appearance in the Cure Bowl on Saturday. The Green Wave are a 3.5 point favorite.

Bowl practice is underway for the LSU Tigers. Joe Burrow says before they begin focusing on Central Frloida, he’s working to make himself a better quarterback…

WalletHub Analyst Jill Gonzales says one category in particular stood out for those Louisiana cities.

The report took into account child poverty, unemployment, homelessness, high school drop outs, and economic security, health, and safety ratings.

The state as a whole has a 4.7 percent unemployment rate, one percent above the national average, but Gonzales says one city’s employment struggles in particular single it out as in need of some extra charitable love this season.

Gonzales says these rankings show the substantial need for giving’s to local charities in the holiday season, and hopes this will inspire Louisianans to seek out reputable non-profits who can bright up the holidays for the less-fortunate.

Senator John Kennedy is pushing back against a Congressional effort to pass a national criminal justice reform bill.

Authorities are looking for two men facing hate crime charges for terrorizing a black woman at the West Monroe Walmart.  Investigators have identified the two as 22 year old Dylan Reynolds and 24 year old Michael Walters.  The woman was leaving the store as the men began yelling at her and calling her racial slurs.  One of the men is accused of chasing after her car on foot as she fled the scene.

 

Over the past 20 months, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Metro Narcotics Division has arrested 11 for allegedly involvement in heroine distribution. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Captain Tommy Carnline says the January 2017 arrest of Tyrone Gabriel had a major domino effect in the investigation…

Over 98-thousand dollars was allegedly stolen from the Office of Motor Vehicles by three employees between March and June of 2017. That’s according to a new Legislative Auditor’s report that surveyed the OMV’s appropriation of funds. Auditor Daryl Purpera says the OMV has been receptive to changes since the release of the report. He notes it can be challenging for that department to prevent these kinds of crimes given how small most OMV outposts can be.

Former Port Allen police officers are accusing Police Chief Esdron Brown of forcing his religion upon his officer corp via mandatory religious meetings and using God’s will as a reasoning for promotions.  Legal analyst Tim Meche says those that lost their positions could potentially be entitled to compensation.

Congress is set to vote this month on a criminal justice reform bill that would give judges more leeway in sentencing non-violent offenders, and would increase funding for rehabilitation programs for prisoners. The bill is backed by President Trump, but Senator John Kennedy and other Republicans say they’re concerned the legislation would lead to more prisoners getting out of jail who could potentially be violent individuals. Kennedy says there’s a number of incidents in Louisiana where a prisoner was released early under the new guidelines, and went on to commit a crime.
