This week marks the busiest week for the United States Postal Service.  USPS spokesperson Sean O’Neill says while some deadlines may have already passed to ensure delivery by Christmas, there are still two days coming up that those shipping gifts this holiday season need to keep on their radar.

O’Neill says for those in a rush, to drop items off at the post office, he recommends using the “click and ship” service on USPS.com to pay for postage ahead of time.

O’Neill says for those leaving town, to ensure the packages you are receiving are in good care and not just left to fend for themselves at your doorstep, USPS has holding services that are quick and simple.

Congressman Cedric Richmond has introducing a half-a- trillion dollar bill that would build an estimated 2.1 million new, affordable homes in America, and subsidize the purchase of existing houses. HousingNOLA Executive Director Andreanecia Morris says passing this legislation would address the country’s widening wealth gap.

Morris says the legislation would also fund home owner education programs to keep people from being taken advantage of by financial institutions, fund home repair and reconstruction in rural areas, and provide a substantial economic stimulus.

HousingNOLA says the bill would create over 30,000 affordable housing opportunities in New Orleans alone, and put an additional 513-million dollars into that city’s economy. She says when those subsidies are applied statewide.

The holidays can be a dangerous time on the roadways so law enforcement is stepping up patrols as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.  Deputy Director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission Dortha Cummins says in the last five years, 139 people have died during the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holiday period.

Cummins says the campaign runs through New Year’s Day and drivers should be aware that law enforcement is out and actively looking for drivers who may be under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or both.

Cummins says the state is one of five that has received a grant from the rideshare app Lyft to provide $5 off a ride to anyone in the state who uses the code “RIDE SMART LA,” all one word.

The Saints visit the Panthers tonight in Carolina for the first meeting of the season between the two. Carolina sits at 6 and 7, and is riding a five game losing streaking that’s all but taken them out of the playoff conversation. Saints QB Drew Brees knows how vital a win tonight would be, with the top seed in the NFC on the line…

The Saints swept the Panthers last year in two regular season games and won in the Dome during the playoffs.

The Panthers season has gone so wrong there’s even rumors it could be the last for coach Ron Riviera, whose team has lost a series of nail biters over the last month. It’s been a down year for the usually potent Panthers defense, but Brees knows they’re still loaded with talent, especially at linebacker

Offensively, Carolina has been carried by second-year running back Christian McCaffery, the diminutive swiss army knife has rushed for 926 yards, and has another 701 receiving yards. Saints running back Alvin Kamara, who was drafted two rounds after McCaffery, says he’s got a lot of respect for the former Stanford star.

A federal judge in Texas declares the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional, because of the federal mandate that requires Americans to buy health insurance or face an additional tax if they do not comply. Judge Reed O’ Connor says now that Congress has removed the penalty for not having coverage, the individual mandate is unconstitutional.

Governor Edwards is disappointed. He says hundreds of thousands of Louisianans could lose their health insurance, if the ruling stands through the appeals process. Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry applauds the decision and says he’ll work with the state legislature to make sure those with pre-existing conditions can obtain coverage.

Today is the final day to sign up for coverage through the A-C-A and the law remains in place despite last night’s ruling. Fewer people are signing up and Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon credits an improving economy…

A federal judge in Texas rules that Obamacare is unconstitutional and Governor John Bel Edwards says it creates uncertainty for nearly 850-thousand Louisianans with a pre-existing health condition as they could lose their health insurance. But Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry says this case is about federal overreach and patients should come first in health care, not a bureaucracy. Landry says if this ruling stands through the appeal process, he’ll work with the legislature to make sure those with pre-existing conditions obtain coverage.
Today is the deadline to sign up for health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act. There are fewer people signing up as last year Congress approved legislation that removes the penalty for not having health insurance….

Former state superintendent of education Paul Pastorek will lead an investigation into allegations that T-M Landry College Prep in Breaux Breaux falsified college applications so their students can attend Ivy league schools. The New York Times reports one of the co founders of the school, Michael Landry, also abused some of the children. State Police is looking into the abuse claims.

Edwards says these graduates are now equipped with the diverse set of skills that will be necessary to navigate the five or more different jobs many of them will have throughout their life.

Just in time for Christmas, Saints quarterback Drew Brees has sent a commemorative football to every player and coach that helped him set the NFL’s career passing record. There were 174 balls that went out to Brees current and former teammates and assistant coaches too. The gift also includes a signed letter. New Orleans travels to Carolina for a Monday night matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

This afternoon, Tulane and UL-Lafayette meet in the Cure Bowl for a 12:30 kick-off in Orlando. The Cajuns like to run the football with Trey Ragas, Elijah Mitchell adn Raymond Calais, while the Green Wave have defended the run well, holding five of their last six opponents to less than 135 yards rushing.

The New Orleans Bowl is also tonight as Appalachian State faces Middle Tennessee in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome from an 8 PM kick-off. Two good quarterbacks in this one, Zac Thomas for Appalachian State, while the Blue Raiders have Conference USA MVP Bent Stockstill.

LSU basketball fans have a late night in front of them as the Tigers will face St. Mary’s at 10 PM in Las Vegas. Both teams were in the NIT last year, this season LSU is 7-3, while St. Mary’s is 7-4. The California-based school is on a four-game winning streak. Jordan Ford leads the Gaels, averaging 23 points a game and shooting 39-percent from three-point land.

In other action, Louisiana Tech is at Louisiana. The Ragin Cajuns have wn five in a row, while the Bulldogs have won four straight and U-L has won four of the last five meetings, including a four-point win in Ruston last year.

ULM will host Stephen F Austn at 2 PM. Daishon Smith is getting closer to full health. He missed several games with a hamstring injury, but scored 19 in a win over Grambling on Tuesday and for the season he’s averaging 18 ponts a game and shooting 49-percent from three-point territory.

Elswhere…Nicholls is at Boston, McNeese meets Missouri Kansas City, Northwestern State hosts southern and Grambling is at Portland.

State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says proponents of Obamacare are pointing towards a lower investment in advertising for the service, but he thinks locally there’s a more obvious answer.

The state Board of Commerce and Industry agrees to give a developer planning to build a massive liquefied natural gas export facility in Calcasieu Parish a tax break that could eventually reach two-billion dollars. The advocacy group, Together Louisiana, objected. Broderick Bagert says local government taxing bodies did not give residents enough information about the project

The Governor, who is up for re-election in 2019, highlighted higher education funding as the primary reason he ran for office in 2015, and says the success of this class of students is a reminder of why the state needs to maintain appropriate funding levels.

The Saints can clinch a first round bye in the NFC playoffs with a win Monday night at Carolina. The Panthers most likely need to win their final three games just to make the playoffs. They have lost five in a row and now sit at 6-and-7. Quarterback Drew Brees tends to play well against the Panthers as he’s averaging 302 yards passing with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in his past seven games.

What a great game last night in the NFL. The Chargers rallied back from a 14-point deficit late in the fourth quarter to beat Kansas City 29-28. Former LSU Tiger Darrel Williams from John Ehret High School scored his first NFL touchdown on a reception from Patrick Mahomes.

Trey Drosclair is out as head football coach of Ascension Catholic after leading the Bulldogs to two straight Division Four title appearances. According to the Advocate, Ascension Catholic officials were not happy Drosclair had boosters on the sidelines during the title game and also took steps to make sure the Bulldogs didn’t run up the score on their opponents.

Tulane and UL-Lafayette will conclude their season tomorrow in the Cure Bowl in Orlando Florida. The Green Wave have won four of their last five and their defense has played much better this season. Tulane Coach Willie Fritz gives credit to his defensive coordinator Jack Curtis….
