Louisiana Department of Health is conducting mass vaccination clinics around the state to prepare for another unpredictable flu season. Kevin Barnhart has more.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission is celebrating 12 months of jobs gains, noting the Bayou State has added 19,900 non farm jobs since September of 2017. Secretary Ava Dejoie says quite a few industries saw year-to-year gains.

Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Lake Charles saw the biggest gains over the year, but one small city in Southeast Louisiana remarkable jump in job opportunities since September of last year.

The town of 20,000 people is home to Southeastern Louisiana University.
Lafayette is up nearly a thousand jobs over last year, with many pointing to the success as evidence that the oil industry is slowly returning. Dejoie says that’s true, but the state has also been working to make sure South Central Louisiana isn’t so dependent on natural resources for their economy.

Despite the gains, the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the state’s unemployment rate at five percent, third highest in the nation.

With flu season starting soon, the Louisiana Department of Health has scheduled flu vaccine clinics around the state, including one today in Thibodaux. Health officials recommend a yearly flu shot for everyone over six months who doesn’t have a complicating condition. Louisiana immunization director Dr. Frank Welch says the flu vaccine clinics are a test run for a more serious emergency.

The state health department will administer mass flu shots in Alexandria tomorrow, Jena on Wednesday and in Marksville, Jonesville Winnfield and Lafayette on Thursday. Welch says similar set ups were done in the time of polio, and the ability to execute this type of operation is one that needs continual practice.

The flu shot is especially crucial for those who may be at high risk for serious complications. Welch says last year the state saw a high rate of vaccinations in what was a really bad flu season for Louisiana.

Those with insurance are asked to bring there card with them. Those without insurance can expect to pay $10 for the shot.

The Agriculture Department says they anticipate the first batch of medical marijuana will be tested around mid-November. Commissioner Mike Strain attends a meeting today amid concerns from licensed medical marijuana pharmacies that the product will not be available this year. Strain says the grower, GB Sciences, has harvested its first plants.

Strain says GB will not be allowed to grow at a larger, primary facility until they complete a legislatively mandated start-up process that includes State Police background checks.
But the project has hit a new roadblock related to testing the pot to make sure it’s safe for consumption. Strain says a myriad of tests need to be run, but they’re having trouble finding a second lab to verify their own safety results.

Strain says they’ve spent 800,000 dollars purchasing equipment to run their test with. And when asked when the oil and pill form based CBD treatments will be available…

GB Sciences says they aren’t to blame for the holdup, and claims they’ve been given no protocol from the Ag Department related to how the drug is supposed to be tested, such as how much product should be sent, and in what form.

Down 10 points in the 4th quarter the Saints scored 17 consecutive points and held on for a 24-23 win over the Baltimore Ravens. New Orleans did a lot of things well to get the win, 4-for-5 on fourth down, only gave up two sacks to the the NFL leader in sacks and Quarterback Drew Brees threw two touchdown passes against the league’s top ranked defense. The LSU Tigers will head into its annual grudge match with top ranked Alabama with a 7-1 record, but they’ll start the game without star linebacker Devin White, who has to sit for the first half after he was flagged for targeting late in the 4th quarter in a 19-3 win over Mississippi State. After the game, Coach Ed Orgeron says the bye week comes at a good time…

LSU’s defense played one of its best games of the year on Saturday as they held Mississippi State to 260 total yards and intercepted Bulldogs quarterback Nick Fitzgerald four times. Cornerback Kristian Fulton says it was a tough call on White, but they have to move on…

But it’s never just a regular game when LSU and Alabama meet. This year it will be a top match-up and first place in the SEC West will be on the line. The Crimson Tide beat the Tigers by two touchdowns last year, but Orgeron says LSU is a much better team this year…

Despite throwing for 124 yards, ULM topped Texas State 20-14 for a homecoming win in Monroe on Saturday. Coach Matt Viator says the defense played great holding the Bobcats to 242 yards and limiting the visitors to just 2-of-13 on 3rd downs…
