The state’s two largest teachers’ unions are responding to Governor Edwards’ push for a 1,000 dollar pay raise for teachers, and a 500 dollar pay raise for support personnel. Louisiana Association of Educators President Debbie Meaux says her organization is seeking a 1,200 dollar a year raise for teachers, as well the establishment of living wages for support personnel.

A section of Bayou Bridge Pipeline construction has been put on hold. The pipeline was paused after parent company ETP agreed to cease construction on private property in St. Martinville after the land’s owner alleged the company was building there illegally. The pipeline was on track to finish construction by October, but Bucket Bridge Director Anne Rolfes says that’s unlikely now.

The governor’s office says they will look to increase public school teacher pay by at least a thousand dollars next year. The state legislature will have to agree with that proposal. Louisiana Association of Educators President Debbie Meaux says they’re also demanding an increase in public school funding….

Average teacher pay in Louisiana is just below 50-thousand dollars a year, which is about two-thousand dollars lower than the Southern Regional Average.

A major hurricane is bearing down on the southeast coast of the United States and Louisiana Fire Marshal is sending resources towards the Carolinas. Teams specializing in Swift Water Rescue and disaster response management left yesterday from fire departments and districts from the New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport areas.

Walker High School has accepted the resignations of head football coach Lester Ricard and an assistant coach, as two are reportedly under investigation by school officials for allegedly making inappropriate comments and sending text messages to young women…

Hundreds gathered at Susan Park in Kenner to protest Mayor Ben Zahn’s decision to ban Nike products from being purchased by local booster clubs. Saints players Cameron Jordan and Terron Armstead were among those in attendance. Zahn says he doesn’t want taxpayer dollars used in a political campaign. Nike has a marketing campaign featuring former NFL quarterback Collin Kapernick, who started the National Anthem protests.

Louisiana Federation of Teachers spokesperson Les Landon says it would take a 1,850 dollar raise to get Bayou educators to the regional average, but the regional average is also too low.

Slidell High School teacher Valerie Scogin is facing backlash for a Facebook post that said, “Want to not be stereotyped, tell people of that color to quit acting like animals.” It’s unclear who the message was directed to, but a school official says it has been taken down and the school system is taking appropriate disciplinary actions.

In the latest high school football rankings no changes at the top. John Curtis, Karr, U-High, Notre Dame and Kentwood remain ranked number one. Barbe, Neville, Union Parish, Loyola Prep and Basile are among the teams now ranked in their respective classes.

Nicholls is ranked 12th while McNeese is ranked 15th in the latest F-C-S Coaches poll. Those two teams meet this Saturday in Lake Charles.

The company building the Bayou Bridge pipeline has agreed to stop work on a parcel of land in St. Martin Parish until an eminent domain dispute can be settled with a property owner. Louisiana Bucket Brigade Director Anne Rolfes says they’ve had protesters demonstrating near work sites arrested and they believe this is a victory in their efforts…

A 1,850 dollar raise, or 3.65 percent, would cost the state 105 million dollars a year. Including all support personnel such as cafeteria workers and principles would jack the price up to 170 million a year.

Landon says while 1,000 dollars would be appreciated, it wouldn’t be enough to substantially effect teacher’s quality of life. He says teacher’s chronically low pay is the reason why the state is facing a budding educator shortage.

Meaux says they’ve been in active conversations with the governor’s office about getting that raise, but notes they’re looking for more than just a pay bump. She says they’re also demanding an increase for public school funding.

This time the pipeline was paused after parent company ETP agreed to cease construction on private property in St. Martinville after the land’s owner alleged the company was building there illegally. Louisiana Bucket Bridge Director Anne Rolfes says ETP did not get eminent domain for the land.

Rolfes says pipeline workers have cleared trees and dug up land over the last 60 days since entering the 32 acre property.

St. Martinville has been the site of increased tensions between environmental activists and local Sherriff’s deputies and ETP security personnel. Clashes between the two groups on the private land has led to arrests and felony charges for several activists, But Rolfes says those activists were invited by the property owner…

The environmental protesters were charged under a law passed last spring that made it a felony to trespass on critical infrastructure such as pipelines.

The pipeline is currently more than 85 percent complete and was on track to finish construction by October, at which point it would begin sending crude oil from Lake Charles to St. James Parish. Rolfes says the decision will, at a minimum, delay the project by nearly three months until the two groups get a hearing.

Seth Warthen, with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, says the chances of development of anything major are negligible. Warthen says once the storm moves north, the risk for a major impact in Louisiana is fairly low.

Corporal Wade Bourgeois Says there were a lot of posts on social media questioning the second-degree murder charge. But under Louisiana law, planning a murder doesn’t result in a first-degree murder charge.

Seth Warthen, with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, says they are keeping an eye on a large cluster of showers and thunderstorms in the northwestern Caribbean that will move over Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula…

There were reports the two were involved in a custody battle and their three children were present when Kayla allegedly killed Thomas Coutee Junior.
