A resolution to denounce the October 6th Draq Queen Story Time event at the main branch of the Lafayette Public Library failed to pass last night. The Lafayette City-Parish Council voted on the measure after hearing from dozen speakers who were for and against the controversial event.

Louisiana has the second highest rate of females killed by men in the United States according to a report from the Violence Policy Center. The Bayou State has seen its rate rise five consecutive years. V-P-C Legislative Director Kristen Rand says there’s a number of factors that go into the state’s high rate, but one in particular stands out.

Advocates hope new legislation requiring convicted abusers and those who are the subject of a protective order to give up their guns to local law enforcement can impact these numbers.

Kennedy will hold a conference call with reporters today regarding Kavanaugh’s nomination. UL-Lafayette Poli-Sci Professor Pearson Cross expects the Senator’s support will go unchanged.

Kennedy told the Advocate newspaper he wants to hear more from the accuser.

The Lafayette City-Parish Council did not vote for a resolution last night to denounce the “Drag Queen Story Time” event scheduled to take place October 6th at Lafayette’s main branch public library. The library board plans to move forward with the event.

And a Mexican immigrant worker died in a Pointe Coupee Parish soybean silo despite efforts to rescue him yesterday afternoon.

Republican Senator John Kennedy says he wants to hear from the woman who accuses US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of a sexual assault that allegedly occurred at a high school party in the 1980s. Kennedy sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee which is expected to vote soon on Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Ground has been broken for a new medical school on the University of Louisiana at Monroe campus. The 100-thousand square foot facility is expected to begin classes in the fall of 2020. ULM President Nick Bruno.

Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine is paying for the building, but the proposed medical school still needs accreditation.

Louisiana ranks second for the rate of women murdered by men and that’s up from third from the year before. Also the report says the rate of women murdered by men has increased for a fifth consecutive year. Kristen Rand, with the Violence Policy Center, says the state needs to expand programs aimed at getting women out of abusive households…

It seems like sixth ranked LSU has bought into the role as the underdog, with big upset wins over Miami and Auburn. But Linebacker Devin White says that’s not the reason why LSU won those games….

The Tigers are a three touchdown favorite to beat Louisiana Tech.

LSU has released its 2019 football schedule. The Tigers will open SEC play at Vanderbilt on September 21st. The schedule also contains two bye weeks, September 28th and November second, the week before they play Bama.

The Saints return to practice today as they get ready to visit the Atlanta Falcons. New Orleans secondary will need to be on its game, because Falcons have some very good wide receivers led by Julio Jones. There’s also veteran Moahamed Sanu, tight end Austin Hooper and Atlanta has added first round pick Calvin Ridley.

Sun Belt play begins this weekend for UL Lafayette and ULM. The Warhawks host Troy. The Trojans are a co-favorite to win the Sun Belt Eastern Division. Coastal Carolina was picked to finish last in that division and the Ragin Cajuns get them at home this Saturday.

LSU basketball has received a verbal commitment from three-star combo guard James Bishop from Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore. He’s six-foot-two, 170 pounds and he’s ranked by 24-7 sports as the 24th best combo guard in the nation.

ULM has broken ground on a new Osteopathic Medicine building. A 100 thousand square foot facility is being built on the campus that is currently scheduled to begin classes in fall of 2020. ULM President Nick Bruno says it’s a very exciting time for the school.

And Bruno says that’s important because students who study and take residencies in one state tend to stay there once they finish their education. The President says that could help address the reported 19 percent shortfall in the number of physicians needed by 2024.

It’s a continuing trend as the state has found itself in the top five since 2016. Legislative Director Kristen Rand says there’s a number of factors that go into the state’s high rate, but one in particular stands out.

1,800 women were murdered in the US by men last year.

The national rate has gone up 11 percent in the last four years, with 93 percent of all murders of women by men being done by someone the victim knew beforehand. Rand says that number should dispel the myth that women at most at risk of being killed by strangers…

82 percent of all murders of women were not linked to another criminal activity.

Rand says Louisiana’s best shot at addressing the issue is by raising awareness of the dangers of domestic murders, and by expanding programs aimed at getting women out of abusive households.

ULM is back at home this Saturday for its Sun Belt opener against the Troy Trojans, one of the co-favorites to win the league this year. Troy is coming off an impressive win over Nebraska. Warhawks Coach Matt Viator says this will be a tough game to win, because the Trojans have looked good this year

The civil case involving the Alton Sterling shooting has uncovered a communication sent one year before Sterling’s shooting death by Officer Blane Salamoni where one his superiors questioned the former Baton Rouge cop’s sanity. Sterling Family Attorney Chris Stewart says his clients are pushing for a quick resolution to the civil case, and warns they’re ready to make life uncomfortable for city officials if they refuse a settlement.

Blane Salamoni was cleared of criminal charges.

LSU place-kicker Cole Tracy is reaching folk hero status after kicking the game winning field goal versus Auburn. Cole is a graduate transfer from Assumption College in Massachusetts.  Now, that school is seeing donations from LSU fans in Cole’s honor.  Assumption College Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Tim Stanton, says the donations started coming after LSU’s win over Miami.

If enough funds are raised, Stanton says they’ll renamed their football field for Tracy.

A report out of the UK says it’s discovered at least 200 couples say video game phenomenon Fortnite is turning their marriage into a battle royale, and risking divorces. It’s the biggest game on the market at the moment, and LSU Health New Orleans Clinical Psychologist Dr. Michelle Moore says like all popular hobbies, it needs to be done in moderation.

Looking ahead to next season, the SEC schedule came out today. The Tigers will kick off league play on September 21st at Vanderbilt. LSU will also visit Mississippi State on October 19th, host Auburn the next week and then it’s Alabama on November 9th, followed by Ole Miss the next week. There’s also two bye weeks, September 28th and November 2nd, before Bama.

It’s Falcons week for the Saints. Both teams are off today after winning their first games of the season on Sunday. Atlanta is dealing with some injuries. Running back Devonta Freeman is expected to miss Sunday’s game with a knee injury. The Falcons defense is missing linebacker Deion Jones and Keanu Neal. Neal is done for the year with an ACL, while Jones is on I-R with a foot injury.

Grambling’s offense has struggled through the first two games of the season, but they are hoping Jordan Jones can provide a spark at running back. He missed the first two games and he’ll play in Saturday’s SWAC opener against Alabama State.

LSU’s star place-kicker Cole Tracy came to LSU as a graduate transfer from Assumption College in Massachusetts.  Now, that school is seeing donations come from LSU fans in Cole’s name.  Assumption College Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Tim Stanton says if the donations continue to accumulate, the school may do something big to honor the grad.

Stewart says the email was produced about a year before Salamoni fatally shot Sterling. The civil case against B-R-P-D, the city and officers involved is set to go to trial in April of 2020. Salamoni has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing.

A big groundbreaking ceremony for a new medical school on the ULM campus took place today. ULM has entered a land lease agreement with Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, which will construct a building at Heritage Park and the Grove. The university says no state funds will be used on the project.
