The House Criminal Justice Committee has voted down legislation that would ban bump stocks. Supporters of the legislation pointed to the Las Vegas shooting as to why the legislature should pass this bill. But Kyle Galotta, who opposes the measure, says the Las Vegas shooting should not mean the end of Bump Stocks.

Chancellors of two LSU Health Sciences Centers delivered impassioned testimonies in front of the Senate Finance committee, calling on legislators not to pass a proposed budget they say would devastate healthcare in Louisiana. New Orleans Chancellor Larry Hollier sats the budget moving to the House Floor would result in a mass exodus of medical professionals.

Hollier pleaded with legislators to go into a special session, so they can pass tax bills to fund a more responsible budget.

The campaign for Congressman Clay Higgins reports the former law enforcement officer has raised 218-thousand dollars during the first quarter of this fundraising year and has 211-thousand dollars on hand. Higgins had just 50-thousand dollars in the bank at the end of 2017. UL Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says Higgins finally has his campaign fundraising operation going….

Republican attorney Josh Guillory and Democrat Phillip Conner, a physician from Lake Charles, are two candidates raising money to challenge Higgins this fall.

Opponents to the bill, claim they need access to their phones at all times while driving. Many note the map feature is something they use on a regular basis while behind the wheel. But Jennifer Smith of Stop Distractions-dot-org says using your cell phone while driving is dangerous…

McNeese catcher Dustin Duhon has been named this week’s Southland Conference hittoer of the week. In four games at the plate, Duhon was 11-for-16 at the plate and helped the Cowboys sweep U-N-O this past weekend. McNeese begins a four-game homestand tonight when they host Houston Baptist in a non-conference contest. The Pokes are 16-and-20.

The 19-and-15 Northwestern State demons Lamar tonight in Natchitoches. Northwestern already owns two victories over Lamar this season.

Southeasetern Louisiana hosts 13th ranked Southern Miss in Hammond. The Lions have lost five of their last six. First pitch is at 6 PM.

In the high school softball playoffs, Class 5-A….21st seeded Denham Springs defeated 12th seeded Ruston 7-5. Also, 18th seeded East Ascension outscored 15th seeded Pineville 18-5.

A House committee killed Baton Rouge Representative Patricia Smith’s proposal to ban bump stocks on guns. Authorities say a bump stock was used to kill more than 50 people in Las Vegas last October by allowing semi-automatic guns to shoot rapid-fire . Smith says something like that can happen here too.

Despite Smith’s plea, the measure failed on an 11-7 vote.

A bill that would allow civil court judges to decide whether juries should know whether a crash victim was wearing a seat belt will be heard in a Senate committee today. Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt says crashes involving people not wearing seat belts lead to heftier settlements.

An LSU survey says Louisianans have a pretty favorable view of their local media. 78 percent of those polled said they trust their local media’s information a lot, or some. Public Policy Research Lab Director Mike Henderson says local media also got high marks in getting the facts right.

A bill by Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt that would allow civil court judges to decide whether or not juries are allowed to know whether or not a crash victim was wearing their seat belt is being heard in committee todayThe bill is backed by the National Federation of Independent businesses who says it’ll save business who employ drivers a good bit of money.

Hewitt says civil law in crash lawsuits is currently convoluted.

An LSU survey shows Louisianans have a favorable view of their local media. 78 percent of those polled said they trust their local media’s information a lot, or some. Public Policy Research Lab Director Mike Henderson says local media also got high marks in getting the facts right.

Local media scored much higher than the national media, where only 32 percent of those polled say they trust what they see.

But the numbers weren’t completely rosy. One third of respondents say they don’t trust their local media. Henderson says if you take a closer look, there’s a big trend.

More than 100 banks in Louisiana could be out from under a wide range of regulations enacted after the 2008 financial crisis. The Dodd-Frank act imposes rules that smaller banks claim are burdensome and have high compliance costs. Louisiana Senators John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy are both in favor of repealing Dodd-Frank.

Gentry is expecting a better shooting performance from Portland’s backcourt of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. They combined to shoot 13 of 41 from the field. New Orleans is also hoping for another great performance from point guard Rajon Rondo, who had 17 assists. Tip off is at 9:30.

Wide receiver Willie Snead is reportedly working out with the Saints, even though he’s yet to sign a contract with New Orleans. Just eight catches for Snead in 2017.

In college football, a new rule has been approved that says if the returning team calls for a fair catch inside the 25-yard line on a kick-off, the ball will be placed at the 25 yard-line. It’s an effort to end the strategy of the kick-off team using sky kicks to pin the opponent deep in its own end. College football, just like the NFL is trying to reduce injuries on kick-offs.
