The state fire marshal’s office says two are dead after a fire in Madisonville. Fire Marshal Butch Browning tells LRN they believe the fire was caused by a propane tank with an outdoor heating element attached. Browning says, at least initially, the fire was caused by an out-door heating element which was improperly being used in the house…

Two other people were involved one was taken to a local hospital for treatment the other person escaped without being harmed.

A Bossier City pastor was arrested on drug charges after deputies found Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia at his house. Andy Harris was the senior pastor of The Church of the Cross in Haughton, and was charged with possession. Bossier Parish Sheriffs Spokesperson Lt. Bill Davis says Harris was being questioned about a separate investigation when detectives learned about the drug activity.

Attorney General Jeff Landry has sued the Vermillion Parish School Board and is asking that the January 8th meeting be voided. Teacher Deyshia Hargrave was ordered out of the meeting and arrested by a deputy city marshal after questioning the board about a raise for the Superintendent. The suit says her arrest violated the Open Meeting Law. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says all actions of the meeting would have to be done over.

Ciolino says not only could the meeting be voided, but board members in attendance at that meeting, including retired chairman Anthony Fontana could face civil penalties…

Thibodaux Police say they arrested a man for allegedly stealing items from where he worked in exchange for drugs. After an internal investigation, the store contacted police. Police Department spokesman David Melancon (Ma-law-san) says the investigation found that 28-year-old Trevor Theriot stole baby formula and exchanged it for Norco pills.

Melancon says after police arrested the suspect and were searching him, they found more than they bargained for…

Police have arrested a man they believe is responsible for killing cattle in Port Barre. 20-year-old Jameson Lagrange was arrested by the Louisiana Livestock Brand Commission on four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals after allegedly killing one cow and three calves.

The National Weather Service is predicting strong to severe weather this weekend through most of Louisiana. After breaking records in rainfall last month, the Red, Mississippi and Ouachita Rivers in North and Central Louisiana are swollen and still above flood stage. State Climatologist Barry Keim says this is the last thing residents along those waterways want to see…

He‘s filed the two pieces of legislation so the legislature can have an open discussion on whether elderly residents should be elected to pubic office…

New Orleans Democrat Senator Troy Carter has filed a bill to raise the state minimum hourly wage to $9.50 for businesses with more than 50 employees by August 2019. 18 states started the year with increased wages and an additional 19 states adopted higher wages in 2017. Carter says in light of WalMart’s recent announcement of employee bonuses and Target raising their minimum wage, it’s time for Louisiana to step up…

US Representative Clay Higgins is proposing two bills aimed at investigating and improving the quality of law enforcement protection at public schools. After the revelation that the school resource officer present at the Florida shooting fled, Higgins says it’s time to reevaluate just who is charged with protecting students.

It’s a short stay in St. Louis for the LSU men’s basketball team as they were bounced out of the SEC tournament by Mississippi State after one game. The Bulldogs held on for an 80-77 win over the Tigers. State built a 19 point lead as they hit a season high 10 three-pointers. But LSU got back into the game thanks to Tremont Waters 28 points and six assists. The loss drops LSU’s record to 17-14 and they’ll find out on Sunday night if that’s good enough to get in the NIT.

Louisiana Tech’s season is done after a 62-58 loss in the Conference USA Tournament. Temple topped Tulane 82-77 to end the Green Wave’s season. Sam Houston State eliminated UNO from the Southland Tournament 85-63.

Anthony Davis is listed doubtful for tonight’s game against Washington at the Smoothie King Center. A-D rolled his ankle in Wednesday’s win over Sacramento. The Pels go after their 11th straight win tonight. Tip off is at 7 PM.

LSU hosts Hawaii for a weekend series beginning tonight at Alex Box Stadium. It’s the final non-conference series for the Tigers, before they begin SEC play next weekend versus Missouri. Coach Paul Mainieri says his team needs to tighten up in the field, defense cost them the ball game versus UL Lafayette on Wednesday. He also is still massaging the mound.

Not counting cocktails, corn, and potatoes… crawfish comes out to a pretty balanced, low calorie meal. Nationally regarded Baton Rouge chef Holly Clegg says the mudbug is the perfect lean meat. Clegg says don’t blame the crawfish’s calories if you fry it or cover it in cream, and she says at a boil, the only downside might be what you put in your mix.

New Orleans Democrat Senator Troy Carter has filed a bill to raise the state minimum hourly wage to $9.50 for businesses with more than 50 employees by August 2019. 18 states started the year with increased wages and an additional 19 states adopted higher wages in 2017.

Louisiana has never had a state minimum wage and business groups have been successful in the past to squash the idea.

Dawn Starns with the Louisiana National Federation of Independent Businesses says to look at the example of other cities and states that have adopted higher minimum wages.

Starns says raising the minimum wage is not enough to help the working poor and the legislature needs to focus more on programs that will truly change their lives for the better…
