Special legislative session coverage on LRN

Hello affiliates,

Our state legislature will begin a special legislative session on Monday, February 19th. That’s when we’ll begin our special legislative programming on the network.

We will have a daily two minute legislative report that will air over the satellite at 5:41 every morning. It also refeeds at 6:15:30 and 6:39:30.

You’ll also be able to download the report from either from the Program with Spots folder or the Newscast folder on your website. You’ll find a new report every morning.

Also, our 5:30 newscast Monday through Thursday will be dedicated to legislative happenings that day.

This again will begin on Monday February 19th and will continue through the regular session which ends June 4th. So our last report will be the morning of June 5th.

6:45 LRN Sportscast Feb 15

The Pelicans head into the All-Star break on a three-game winning streak as New Orleans defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 139-117. The Pels got off to a great start scoring 46 points in the opening quarter and finished strong by outscoring the Lakers 36-26 in the four quarter. Another big game from Anthony Davis, as he had 42 points and 15 rebounds. Even though he left the game briefly with a groin injury.

Nicholls remains in first place in the Southland after a thrilling 73-72 win over Sam Houston State. Tevon Saddler and Roddy Peters each had 15 points. The Bearkats missed a layup at the buzzer uston.

Southeastern Louisiana remains a half game back of Nicholls in the Southland standings as the Lions held off UNO 71-64. S-LU led 40-17 at halftime, Jordan Capps had 18 points.

Elsewhere…McNeese won, but Northwestern State and Tulane both lost.

The first place Ragin Cajuns return to the court tonight as they host Texas State for a 7:15 tip off. UL-Lafayette is 11-1 in the Sun Belt, while the Bobcats have lost four of their last five. The Cajuns won easily in San Marcos last month by the final score of 80-55.

ULM has won four of its last five and they host Texas-Arlington tonight. The Warhawks are in ninth place in the Sun Belt, but Coach Keith Richard says if they keep winning, they’ll quickly move up the standings…

Also tonight, Louisiana Tech will host UAB at 8 PM in a game televised by the CBS Sports Network. The Bulldogs are tied for eighth in CUSA with a record of 6-7.

Three Central Louisiana restaurants have been caught selling swai (Suh-why) fish, passing it off as catfish.  Jeff Palermo says they were all owned by the same people…

The Louisiana Department of Health is extending its free flu shot drive after initially planning to end the program Monday. Immunization Director Dr. Frank Welch says they were excited to extend the program after a very successful two week run.

The shots are available at LDH parish health clinics, and free to the public,

A series of Mardi Gras day shootings in New Orleans left three dead and five injured. None of the shootings occurred on an active parade route. New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison says the shootings shouldn’t mar an otherwise positive carnival season.

Cut 10 (11) “greater intensity.”

Shreveport Police are looking for a man who is robbing elderly women and assaulting them with a baseball bat.  The robberies started in late January and have continued since.  Detective Richard Turpen says since the attacks started, police have become more concerned since the suspect has been acting more aggressive…

Turpen says a few of the victims have been able to describe their attacker, but the description police are working with isn’t much since the attacks are from behind…

Three central Louisiana restaurants have been caught selling swai (Suh-why) fish, passing it off as catfish. LDWF spokesperson Adam Einck says the managers at Rosie Joe’s and Debarge’s Crawfish in Alexandria and Crazy Cajun in Tioga were cited after the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was tipped off…

Einck says Pineville residents Robert Fant, Mollie McDowell and Michael Rhodes were cited for selling swai fish as catfish…

Cut 5  (11)  “as well.”

The swai fish comes from Asia and is also known as shark catfish. Einck says some restaurants choose to use swai fish because it’s cheaper to buy than catfish…

Cut 6 (10)  “yearly costs.”

None of the stores were shut down.  Selling swai fish as catfish can bring a fine of up to 950-dollars and up to four months in jail.

This year’s flu shot has been criticized for having a potentially lower than normal effectiveness. Welch says despite some claims to the contrary, getting the flu shot is still a great idea.

From January 29th to February 10th, 4,000 free flu shots were administered.

Harrison says despite Tuesday’s shootings, there’s been a decrease in violence in the city thanks to increased police efforts.

After a very successful week in the Peach State last week with victories over Georgia Southern and Georgia, ULM basketball retuns home tonight to face Texas-Arlington. Warhwaks Coach Keith Richard says knocking down the three point shot was the key in those two victories…

With the two victories last week, ULM is 11-12 overall, 5-7 in the Sun Belt. Richard says senior guard Sam McDaniel has become a big threat from beyond the three-point line…

ULM currently sits in ninth place in the Sun Belt. But Richard says if they keep winning, they’ll quickly move up the standings…

Lights out shooter Jacobi Boykins leads Louisiana Tech against UAB tonight. Tech sits at 8th in C-USA standings with and UAB sits at 7th with five conference games remaining. The Bulldogs are looking to rebound after a tough night against Old Dominion where they coughed up the ball an incredible 20 times in route to an 82-69 loss. ‘Dogs head coach Eric Konkol says they got bull rushed from the tipoff.

UAB started conference play hot, grabbing four wins in their first five games, but have run up a three and five C-USA record since. If the Bulldogs want to run level with UAB in conference standings, Konkel says they’ll have to take better care of the ball.

Three Cenla restaurant managers were cited after allegedly using swai fish as catfish.  Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesperson Adam Einck says Robert Fant, Mollie McDowell and Michael Rhodes all of Pineville, used the swai fish at Rosie Joe’s and Debarges’s Crawfish in Alexandria and Crazy Cajun in Tioga.

Catholics are cutting back on eating meat for the Lenten season, in most places, that’s a sacrifice, but for spoiled bayou Catholics, it’s not too tough. Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board member Chalin Delaune says there’s a good supply of seafood, but the cold weather could keep crawfish prices high.

The LSU Vet School is providing care for a goose who was pierced with an arrow.  The wounded goose was found near the LSU Lakes and captured by Wildlife and Fisheries crews. Since there is no identification on the goose, they will not give the goose out for adoption.  Spokesperson Julie Thomas says once he has recovered, he will live in the wild again…

Officials do not know by whom or where the goose was shot.

Livingston Parish deputies have arrested three men in connection with the death of a 19-year-old female. The body of Emily Rodgers was found Tuesday in a wooded area off Catfish Landing Road in Maurepas (more-a-pa). Sheriff Jason Ard says they’ve arrested Justin Scivique (Suh-vick), Derek Williford and John Cowart….

Cowart has been charged with second degree murder.

A goose is being well cared for by LSU Vets after it was found with an arrow piercing it’s wing.   The wounded goose was found near the LSU Lakes and captured by Wildlife and Fisheries.  After an initial checkup, LSU Vet School spokesperson Julie Thomas says doctors feel the goose shouldn’t be grounded too long…

Fishermen are kicking into high gear to satisfy the big desire for seafood in the Lenten season. Matt Doyle has more.

Due to widespread flu activity, the Louisiana Department of Health continues to offer free flu shots at Parish Health clinics.  Reported flu cases in the state are twice the activity we see in a normal flu season.    Almost four-thousand flu vaccines have been administered in the last 2 weeks and several thousand doses remain.

The New Orleans Pelicans are home tonight to host the Los Angeles Lakers after back-to-back road victories over the Brooklyn Nets and the Detroit Pistons. The Pels are in eighth place in the Western Conference, a half-game ahead of the Clippers for the final playoff spot. New Orleans is also a half game back of the Nuggets for sixth placet.

The top teams in the Southland Conference battle each other tonight. First place Nicholls hosts second place Sam Houston State. The Colonels have a half game lead over the Bearkats and they are looking for their first win over Sam Houston since 2013.

UNO and Southeastern Louisiana are tied with the Bearkats for second place and they face off tonight in Hammond. The Lions have won three in a row, while the Privateers have won five of their last six.

Also tonight, Northwestern State hosts Houston Baptist, McNeese visits Central Arkansas and Tulane hosts East Carolina.

LSU fell to 5-8 in the SEC with an 80-65 loss to Alabama last night. The Crimson Tide shot 55-percent and knocked down 10 three-pointers. They also had some highlight reel dunks. At one point, Bama had a 25 point lead. The Tigers host Missouri on Saturday. The Tigers won their fifth straight by beating Texas A-and-M 62-58 last night.

There were reports former Saints quarterback Doug Nussmeier would be named as an offensive analyst on Ed Orgeron’s staff at LSU. But the ex-offensive coordinator at Alabama, Michigan and Florida has found another job. He’ll reportedly serve as tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys.

WAFB reports Coach O has purchased a home at the University Club in Baton Rouge. Orgeron’s current home is in the Mandeville-area.

Coach O is interested in signing Houston quarterback Grant Gunnell and the four-star prospect has re-opened his recruitment. Gunnell has decommitted from Texas A-and-M, because of the coaching change and other factors.
