Congress approves a measure to reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program for the next 90 days, as federal lawmakers work on a long-term solution. US Senator John Kennedy says he’s glad congressional leaders didn’t let the clock run out on the program that expired September 30…:

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is asking the public to limit the transportation of Roseau cane, as the species is rapidly dying off. Biologist Manager Vaughn McDonald says the Roseau cane scale, which is a bug, is killing off the beneficial plant life…:

Irma has now weakened into a topical storm, as it moved about 100 miles north of Tampa, Florida according to the National Hurricane Center. Forecasters say Irma was still producing some wind gusts near hurricane force. The storm battered the Florida Peninsula Sunday, flattened homes, flooded the Keys and caused more than 5 million power outages.

LSU Remains NO. 12 in the AP Top 25 poll following a 45-10 win over Chattanooga on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. The Tigers are now headed into this weekend’s SEC opener versus Mississippi State in Starkville. Between Jack Gonsoulin and Connor Culp, the Tigers have missed three field goals. Mississippi State had no problem against Louisiana Tech in a 57-21 non-conference win over the weekend in Ruston. State’s Nick Fitzgerald threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more. Tech travels to face Western Kentucky in its Conference USA opener this Saturday.

An intriguing matchup to start the season for the Saints as they visit the Minnesota Vikings to kick-off the 2017 campaign. New Orleans led the NFL in total offense last year, while the Vikings had the league’s third-ranked defense, and return most of their starters from 2016. Saints Quarterback Drew Brees says it’s a tough match-up to start the season…:

In other football action around the state over the weekend, The Ragin’ Cajuns fell to Tulsa 66-42 in an offensive shootout.

Nicholls State rallied back from an early 14-0 deficit against Texas A&M, but the Aggies did just enough to put the game away as the Colonels fell 24-14.

McNeese State hammered Florida Tech 42-21. Southeastern Louisiana fell to Bethune-Cookman 28-23.

The 165th has served during numerous hurricanes and helped with commodity distribution during last year’s floods. Bush says the 165th also mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and this mission is very similar.

Kennedy filed a bill to reauthorize the program for the long term that he says has bipartisan support. He says he wants to establish integrity in the NFIP while also not undermining the purpose of the program by causing premiums to skyrocket.

Kennedy says he’s trying to strike a balance between sustainability and affordability. He says his bill and others are on the table for discussion, and extending the deadline for the short-term gives lawmakers a chance to look at all their options.

The plant helps to protect the Mississippi River delta and the coastal region. LDWF Biologist Manager Vaughn McDonald says the Roseau cane scale, which is a bug, is killing off the beneficial plant life.

The bug is mostly found in 11 of the state’s most southern parishes. McDonald urges fisherman to fill out a survey on the LDWF website if they notice the Roseau cane scale. He says sportsman should take precautions after being around phragmites.

McDonald reminds duck hunters to not tie their boats up to the cane. He says phragmites stands up well during tropical storm events and the scale impacts the health of our coastal marshes.

12th ranked LSU returns to Tiger Stadium for the first time in 2017 as they host Chattanooga at 6:30. Last week, the Tigers started four true freshman and young players could see more playing time tonight, if this game gets out of hand. LSU is 12-0 against FCS teams. The Mocs lost their season opener to Jacksonville State 27-13.

For the 13th time, Louisiana Tech will play Mississippi State and for the second time the game will take place in Ruston. Tech beat State 22-14 in 2008 at Joe Aillet Stadium. Bulldogs Coach Skip Holtz says it’s been tough preparing for Mississippi State Q-B Nick Fitzgerald…

The Ragin Cajuns had a thrilling win over Southeastern Louisiana last week, this afternoon they travel to take on Tulsa. Last year, the Golden Hurricane offense ranked fourth nationally in yards per game and seventh in scoring. Tulsa lost last week to Oklahoma State 59-24.

Tulane begins American Athletic Conference play by visiting Navy. Nicholls State is looking for its fourth victory over an FBS team as they take on reeling Texas A-and-M, who blew a 34-point. third quarter lead and lost 45-44 to UCLA. Last year, the Colonels nearly beat Georgia.

Elsewhere…McNeese hosts Florida Tech, Southeastern Louisiana takes on Bethune-Cookman in Hammond, Northwestern State makes the short to Grambling State and Southern is at Southern Miss.

Hurricane Irma is once again approaching the threshold for Category 5 strength. The storm weakened to a Category 4 this morning, but the National Hurricane Center says Irma could regain its strength as it moves over Cuba and heads towards Florida. Either way, forecasters say the storm could still be devastating to the Sunshine State.
