Today, Governor John Bel Edwards and DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson are in Washington D.C. to meet with the US Army Corps of Engineers to discuss the long-delayed Comite River Diversion Canal, a flood control project for the Baton Rouge area. Wilson says the state has committed a significant amount of resources for this project, and it’s time for the Corps to do their part…:

Wilson says the project, intended to be funded by the Corps, was approved in 1992, and has been tied up over the years in federal bureaucracy. He says they know that the floods of 2016 would have been lessened to a certain extent by this project, and Louisiana is ready to move the ball…:

Wilson says the project would be a channel that diverts water out of the Comite, and takes it directly to the Mississippi River and away from more populated areas. He says the dollars that the state has ready to spend will help move the project forward, but the feds need to commit to getting it done:

For the fourth consecutive year, the Saints have started 0-2 as they dropped a 36-20 decision to the New England Patriots. Quarterback Tom Brady scorched the New Orleans defense for 447 yards and three touchdowns. On offense, the Saints converted just 33% of their third down opportunities.

The Patriots jumped out to a 20-3 lead as Brady made it look easy. Payton says the lack of a pass rush allowed the Pats to put up 557 total yards of offense.

The Saints have now lost 11 of their last 12 games in the month of September. They travel to Carolina this Sunday and Payton believes this team can turn things around.

The median household income in Louisiana declined by over 2-percent in 2016, the largest decrease in the nation according to Census Figures. Dr. LSU Economist Loren Scott says this decrease is a result of the struggling oil and gas industry. He says we have three metropolitan areas that are in a recession, Houma, Lafayette and Shreveport.

Scott says there are definitely signs of optimism for better numbers in 2017. He says the rate of decline in both Houma and Lafayette has significantly lessened.

Louisiana looks to be improving as we gained 24,200 nonfarm jobs since August of last year. Scott says the job numbers have been up for May, June, and July.

Attorney General Jeff Landry is alerting consumers to be on the lookout when buying vehicles, as nearly one million vehicles were flooded in Texas and Florida during recent hurricanes. Landry says these flood-damaged vehicles could end up on the streets and sold to unsuspecting car buyers…

Landry says fraudsters tend to cross state lines to avoid scrutiny and they work to obtain false titles to hide flood damage. He advises consumers to obtain a vehicle history report. The A-G says when shopping on the lot, there are some things you can look for that could point to a previously flooded vehicle…

Landry says if you suspect someone is knowingly selling a flood damaged vehicle, contact your local authorities or call the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at (800) 351-4889.

“Tell the truth Monday” will not be kind for the LSU Tigers after they were embarrassed 37-7 by Mississippi State. The Tigers were beat at the line of scrimmage, the defense had blown assignments and LSU also committed 9 penalties for 112 yards. Quarterback Danny Etling is bothered by the high number of penalties…

The loss drops LSU’s record to 2-1. Etling says he’s not giving up on the season and is eager to correct the mistakes that led to Saturday’s blowout loss…

Jonathan Barnes 22-yard field goal with two seconds left gave the Bulldogs an important win as they look to win the Conference USA western division. Barnes had three field goals on the night…

Another big day of college football is on tap. LSU visits Mississippi State in the SEC Opener. Louisiana Tech takes on Western Kentucky in a rematch of last year’s Conference USA title game. UL Lafayette is at Texas A-and-M, ULM hosts Southern Miss and the defending champs in the SWAC Grambling begin defense of their league title by hosting Jackson State.

The principal wanted by Baton Rouge police after allegedly locking a 5-year-old in a closet has turned himself in to authorities. Sgt. L’Jean McKneely says 31-year-old Shafeeq Deen has been charged with cruelty to a juvenile and false imprisonment…:

East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. Beau Clark has released the findings from hospitals tests on the body of an 18-year-old LSU student who died in what the university calls a possible hazing incident. Clark says they did not find any internal or external signs of trauma on Maxwell Gruver:

His office will provide a toxicology test which takes about four weeks to complete. Meanwhile, a memorial mass and prayer vigil for Gruver will take place Monday at 6 PM at the Christ King Catholic Church at LSU.

An Alexandria Police officer has been booked into the Rapides Parish detention center on malfeasance and drug charges. State Trooper Scott Moreau says State Police received a tip last month regarding criminal activity involving 42-year-old Kenneth Thomas who allegedly had sex with at least one woman, while on-duty, and distributing illegal drugs…:

Alexandria Police Chief Neal Bates says Officer Thomas has been placed on Administrative Leave.

And here’s a bizarre story out of Terrebonne Parish. Houma Police arrested a man and woman who were allegedly caught having sex in a library. Authorities say 33-year-old Elizabeth Jernigan and 35-year-old Rex Jernigan also recorded themsevles and uploaded the video to a porn site. Through their investigation, it was determined the couple recorded themselves doing similar activities at other businesses.

A principal in Baton Rouge is accused of locking a kindergarten student in a roach infested cafeteria closet as a form of punishment. B-R-P-D Sgt. L’Jean McKneely says 31-year-old Shafeeq Deen may have punished other students at Laurel Oaks Charter School in a similar way…

Deen is charged with cruelty to a juvenile and false imprisonment and the charter school’s board suspended Deen while they investigate.

Authorities say a prison guard at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola fatally shot an inmate after first firing a warning shot. The state department of Corrections says 35-year-old Brandon Lizotte was among a group of prisoners being escorted to work an area when he aggressively ran towards a correctional officer. The officer fired his service weapon striking Lizotte. Lizotte was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder in Tangipahoa Parish in 2006.

LSU and Mississippi State meet tonight in Starkville in the SEC opener for both teams. The Tigers best pass rusher returns to the field. Arden Key missed the first two games as he continued to recover from shoulder surgery. Key and the rest of the Tigers will look to control Bulldogs Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald who has 152 yards on the ground already this season. Tigers linebacker Devin White on this Mississippi State offense…

The other big game in the SEC is Tennessee at Florida. The Vols are averaging 42 points a game. In College Station, Texas A-and-M hosts UL Lafayette. True freshman Kellen Mond might get the start for the Aggies at quarterback. Senior Jake Hubenak will reportedly not play because of a shoulder injury. Kick-off is at 11 AM.

Louisiana Tech and Western Kentucky resume their rivalry today as the two teams meet in Bowling Green, Kentucky at 6 PM. These two teams split a pair of games last season, Tech won in the regular season, but the Hilltoppers were victorious in the Conference USA title game.

Defending SWAC champion Grambling State opens defense of its league title by hosting winless Jackson State. Jackson State has really struggled to start the season. They’ve only scored 15 points in two games and they allowing almost 400 yards of total offense.

Tulane is at 2nd ranked Oklahoma. The Green Wave has never defeated a team ranked in the top five.

ULM hosts Southern Miss. It’s the first meeting between these schools since 1993. Southeastern Louisiana is at Central Arkansas. Northwestern State hosts Lamar, Nicholls State takes on Priaire View and McNeese State is at Alcorn State.

The Saints host New England tomorrow. Offensive tackle Zach Strief has been ruled out for the game because of an injury.

Louisiana’s unemployment rate has now declined for four consecutive months according to data released by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. At 5.2%, the current rate is the lowest it’s been since August of 2008. That figure is also 0.9 percentage points lower from the same time period a year ago.

The preliminary autopsy report on the LSU student who died at a fraternity has been released. East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. Beau Clark says a medical report found elevated levels of alcohol in Max Gruver’s system, and they discovered some swelling in the brain and lungs…:

He says a detailed autopsy report should be complete in about 4 weeks. LSU is investigating the death as a possible hazing incident and has suspended all Greek activities until further notice.

A report released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that Louisiana’s pay gap is the 45th worst in the country, but is slightly better than last years. It said full-time women earn an average of $659 per week, while men made $863. The nation as a whole has a pay gap of about 82%.

An inmate from Angola was shot to death by a corrections officer and State Police is investigating. The Department of Corrections said the offender was killed after he refused to obey a warning shot and verbal command to stop charging at the guard.

The state lawmaker who admitted to taking money from his campaign fund to fuel a gambling addiction will have to pay a $37,000 fine to the state treasury under an agreement reached today. The Louisiana Board of Ethics also said that Representative Dee Richard will no longer be allowed to draw from his war chest. Richard had said his compulsive gambling was a side effect of medication he was taking for Parkinson’s disease.

State Police is investigating the case of an inmate who died at Angola after being shot by a corrections officer. The department of corrections says an initial investigation reveals that the 35-year-old offender Brandon Lizotte began charging at the officer and did not stop even though he was given a verbal command and warning shot. The guard fired his weapon at Lizotte who later died.

LSU opens SEC play tomorrow night with a battle against the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. Jeff Palermo has a preview…:

Louisiana Tech jumps into Conference USA play on Saturday against Western Kentucky. It’s the eighth meeting between the two teams and Tech leads the all-time series four to three.
