According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 65 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty this year, a 30 percent increase over the same period last year. President and CEO Craig Floyd says one Louisiana officer was killed in a crash, and two others were shot.

One the second day of qualifying, three candidates have joined the race to fill the public service commission seat vacated by Scott Angelle. Damon Baldone was appointed by the governor to occupy the seat temporarily, but he’s had his eye on this race since last year.

A Shreveport firefighter will appear on this Sunday’s episode of Guy’s Grocery Games, which will air on Food Network at 7 p.m. Mark Myers, Jr. cooks for private parties and does meal preparation for clients, all while laying his life on the line as a fireman. Myers says on this “American Heroes” episode, he faces off against a police officer, EMT, and military veteran.

The 30-year-old has been a fireman for 10 years and says he’s always had a passion for spending time in the kitchen. Myers says the competition involves running through a grocery store, picking out ingredients and cooking a meal all within 30 minutes. He says Guy also includes an added challenge.

Myers says he’s a self-taught chef through trial and error and learning from YouTube videos. He says he started his catering company, Remarkable Foods, all through encouragement from friends a little over year ago.

Texas Brotherhood Ride president Tim Dunn says this is about honoring those fallen officers.

Dunn says the group consists of 26 firefighters, EMTs, and police officers, as well as 12 other riders. But he says the ride isn’t about the cyclists, it’s about those who made the ultimate sacrifice and their families. He says people from around the country are coming together to show they never forget.

The 500 mile ride began in Dallas on July 9, two days after the anniversary of the Dallas attack. From there, the riders made stops in Corsicana, Palestine, Lufkin, Maryville, and Eunice. Today, riders are wrapping up the six day trip in Baton Rouge. The ride ends with a ceremony at BRPD headquarters.

The Toledo Bend Reservoir has earned a spot in the top five bass fishing lakes in the Central U.S. Sabine Parish CVB Director Linda Curtis Sparks says this is the third time Toledo Bend has been in the best lakes to bass fishing in the country in recent years. She says it’s an extremely positive time in the area with all the visitors…

Toledo Bend is located in Sabine Parish along the Louisiana-Texas border. In addition to being named the number 4 bass fishing lake in the central part of the country, the Lt. Governor’s office also recently launched the Louisiana Bass Trail. Sparks says it showcases the great fishing that can be done in north Louisiana.

Toledo Bend was named the top bass fishing lake in the country in 2015 and 2016 by Bassmaster Magazine. Sparks says the structure of the lake makes Toledo Bend so special. She credits their great success to the very active stocking program plus with natural spawning.

Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves says he’s been in touch with Scalise and his family throughout this ordeal.

Graves says anytime an infection comes into play, it does cause some concern. Scalise was moved out of the ICU Wednesday, according to MedStar Washington hospital. He underwent surgery yesterday for the recent infection. Graves says Scalise has a long road ahead.

Candidates continue to qualify for the open seat on the Public Service Commission. Longtime Democrat Damon Baldone has served as interim since Scott Angelle vacated the position. But he qualified Wednesday as a Republican.

President and CEO Craig Floyd says unfortunately, we’re seeing more and more attacks on police. He says nationwide 23 officers were killed in firearms-related fatalities.

Twelve Louisiana beaches have been placed under a health advisory as the water contains high amounts of enterococci bacteria. Dr. Fred Lopez with the department of infectious diseases at LSU Health New Orleans says warm water allows this bacteria to thrive.

This bacteria is found in sewage and the human intestine.

Reggie’s Bar at Tigerland in Baton Rouge has had its liquor license suspended again after a sting operation resulted in 37 arrests for underage drinking. A judge ruled today Reggie’s cannot serve alcohol for 45 days, and the bar must pay an $8,000 fine. Another hearing set for next week will decide the fate of the popular bar near the LSU campus.

Three candidates have signed up for former-Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle’s open seat in the October 14 election. One of those is Lenar Whitney, a Houma Republican who served four years in the state House. Whitney says if elected, she’ll lookout for consumers.

Health advisories are in effect for 12 Louisiana beaches because of high levels of bacteria. Dr. Fred Lopez with LSU Health New Orleans says people with weak immune systes are more susceptible to contracting infections from these bacteria.

Lopez also advises people not to get in the water if they have open wounds.

Saints superfan Jarrius Robertson received The Jimmy V Perseverance Award last night at the ESPYS. The 15-year-old has had two liver transplants, but that’s never stopped him from following his favorite team. When accepting the award on ESPN, Robertson thanked all the people who have helped him achieve his dreams.

On the final day of SEC Media Days, Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze couldn’t get away from the questions about the NCAA’s long-running investigation into the program. The Rebels are facing 21 allegations that include academic, booster and recruiting misconduct, and Freeze couldn’t offer much insight into where all that stands. And he also didn’t comment on the lawsuit filed against the university on Wednesday by former Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt.

In the first home game of his pro career, former LSU standout Kramer Robertson nailed 4 hits and belted two home runs Wednesday to help the Class A Peoria Chiefs prevail 10-3 over Lake County. The St. Louis Cardinals selected Robertson in the fourth round of the MLB Draft last month.

Louisiana Tech offensive lineman O’Shea Dugas has been named to the 2017 Outland Trophy Watch List. In 2016, the Lafayette native helped lead a Bulldogs unit that ranked third nationally in tackles for loss allowed at 3.71 per game.

Two LSU players were named to the Bronco Nagurski Trophy Preaseason Watch List..Arden Key was one of 29 linebackers, while Kevin Toliver joined 29 other defensive backs. Tigers lineman Will Clapp landed also on the Outland list.

ESPN is reporting that some of their officials are in Louisville to meet with free-agent point guard Rajon Rondo about a possible one-year deal. The 11-year veteran played in 69 games with the Chicago Bulls last season and averaged 7.8 points, 6.7 assists and 5.1 rebounds.

LSU first baseman Nick Coomes is underwent hip surgery this morning and will miss fall practice, LSU coach Paul Mainieri told Tiger Rag Magazine on Thursday.

The next Mike the Tiger at LSU will enjoy nearly $1 million dollars worth of renovations to the habitat on campus, including a rock for laying that will be cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. The LSU Daily Reveille reported that the $975,000 improvements to the tiger habitat should be completed by Aug. 14, weather permitting.

The state Department of Health takes water samples from 24 beaches to determine the levels of the enterococci bacteria. Dr. Fred Lopez with the department of infectious diseases at LSU Health New Orleans says warm water allows this bacteria to thrive.
