Flash flood watches are in effect across south Louisiana through Thursday night as Tropical Storm Cindy is expected to dump a lot of rain in the next two days. State Climatologist Barry Keim says storm surge could be an issue in coastal areas and there is a possibility of a tornado. But he says rain and potential flash flooding will be the biggest problem.

Governor John Bel Edwards signed a bill into law that prevents public schools from physically punishing students with developmental disabilities. Senate Education Chairman Blade Morrish says this allows the administration to take a step back and realize certain students are not allowed to receive corporal punishments.

Residents are already preparing in St. Tammany Parish. Parish President Pat Brister says the National Weather Service is calling for as much as 10 inches of rain in her parish. She says river and street flooding are their biggest concerns.

Assistant superintendent of early childhood development Jenna Conway says the federally funded Childcare Assistance Program offers subsidies for working families to choose a childcare provider.

Conway says 18-thousand Louisiana children ages birth to five participate in the program. The program grew exponentially when DOE lowered the work threshold for families to qualify, from 30 to 20 hours a week. She adds as more people go to work, they will need consistent childcare.

Conway says unfortunately, the program is underfunded to sustain this kind of growth, which is why the date-based waitlist is necessary. She says applications will be processed until June 30 and encourages families to apply now.

State climatologist Barry Keim says the system is expected to make landfall as a tropical storm near the Texas-Louisiana border late Wednesday or early Thursday morning, but the largest rain totals will occur to the east of the storm’s center.

Flash flood watches are in effect across south Louisiana through Thursday evening. Keim says storm surge could be an issue in coastal areas, and it’s possible a tornado could form. But he says rain and potential flash flooding will be the biggest problems.

Keim says the heaviest rains are expected in southeast Louisiana, but the entire coast is vulnerable. He says that’s because the major rainfall associated with this system is far removed from the center of circulation.

Lafourche Parish is gearing up for Tropical Storm Cindy that is set to hammer southeast Louisiana with rain. Brennan Matherne with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office says the parish is continuing to pump down drainage canals and sandbags are available at all parish field office locations.

Matherne says Port Fourchon Harbor Police will be monitoring LA-1 throughout the system checking for storm surge. He urges residents who flood during heavy rain events to take precautions.

St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister is also getting her residents prepared for the heavy rain event. Brister says the parish does not have many drainage pumps and heavily relies on gravity drainage, so they are taking precautions.

Total rain accumulations of 6 to 9 inches are expected, with isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches over southeastern Louisiana. The National Hurricane Center says the system has become better organized since yesterday, but still lacks a well-defined center.

Sheriff’s deputies in St. Tammany are investigating a double homicide and have released the name of the suspect at large. They say Jason Magee III is wanted on two counts of first degree murder in the death of his ex-wife and her boyfriend.

The LSU baseball team found out why Oregon State is 56-4 on the season. The Tigers made too many mistakes to keep up with the Beavers in a 13-1 loss to the top seeded team in the College World Series. LSU walked 12 batters, made a few mistakes in the field and could only manage four hits at the plate. Starting pitcher Eric Walker left the game in the third inning with forearm soreness in his throwing arm. Coach Paul Mainieri says that was the turning point of the game….

The LSU football team has received a commitment from Southern Lab running back Tyrion Davis. He is the seventh verbal pledge for the class of 2019. Davis is six-foot-one, 212-pounds and rushed for 12-hundred yards last season as a sophomore to help the Kittens win the Division Four state championship.

The Saints have announced they signed free agent center Chris Watt. Watt was a third round pick for the San Diego Charger in 17 games and has made eight starts during his career. He missed all of last season with a knee injury.

Elbert Robinson’s basketball career at LSU is done as he’s leaving the team because of medical reasons. The seven-foot-one, 300 pounder will remain at LSU as he’s set to graduate next year.

Former Barbe star Gavin Cecchini hit his first major league home run last night and he did it off Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers Ace gave up four home runs but L-A still beat the Mets 10 to 6.

The 10th annual Louisiana Seafood Cook-off is tonight at the Cajundome in Lafayette as the best chefs in the state will compete for the title of King or Queen of Louisiana seafood. Usually the event takes place in New Orleans, but Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser moved it to Lafayette to help their economy, which has struggled because of the downturn in the oil and gas industry….

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a double homicide, which they say occurred yesterday evening in the Pearl River area. No further details are currently available.

The LSU Tigers are licking their wounds today after an embarrassing 13-1 loss last night to Oregon State in the College World Series. The Bayou Bengals now head into an elimination game against Florida State tomorrow night.

Louisiana becomes the first state to “ban-the-box,” prohibiting state colleges from inquiring about a potential student’s criminal history during the application process.
