The controversial bill designed to protect war monuments in Louisiana gets heard by the full House today. Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell says this measure is a response to the Confederate statues being removed in New Orleans, but these veterans’ blood was shed for the country as a whole…:

But Baton Rouge Representative Denise Marcelle says the local government in New Orleans has voted to take down these statues, and this bill is about usurping the authority of the local municipalities…:

Attorney General Jeff Landry is holding a news conference in Lafayette today to highlight a new initiative in the state’s efforts to fight opioid abuse, misuse, and overdose. The AG will speak on the matter at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office beginning at 10am.

Baton Rouge Police are dealing with a big mystery in the death of the star quarterback of McKninley Senior High just days away before Bryant Lee was slated to graduate with honors. Cops say one of the biggest issues they are dealing with is that there were over a hundred people at a party the 18-year-old was attending when he was shot in the head, but almost no one is talking. A motive has not yet been determined. Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact authorities.

LSU played some of their best baseball here in the home stretch and wrapped up a sweep of Auburn this weekend with a 9-1 win in game three. The Tigers have won eight of its last nine Southeastern Conference games to climb atop the SEC West. They’ll host Northwestern State tomorrow night.

UL-Lafayette clinched their Sun Belt Conference series following a 4-3 victory over Texas State. This keeps the Cajuns in second place in the SBC West Division.

ULM fell to Troy for all three games. Tulane got an 11-4 conference win over Houston. Nicholls State beat in-state foe UNO 8-7. Southeastern edged Central Arkansas 3-2. Louisiana Tech got the win over Marshall 6-4.

McNeese State completed a three-game sweep of Creighton and continue to lead the Southland with a 20-7 record.

Grambling State clinched the western division title on Sunday and will be the No. 1 seed in the west entering the SWAC baseball tournament. The Tigers did this by way of Southern defeating Texas Southern Sunday and the Jaguars are also headed to post-season play.

Last week it was reported Saints center Max Unger suffered a foot injury that required surgery. At the team’s rookie mini camp, Coach Sean Payton said the goal is to have Unger back by Week 3 of the preseason. Payton said he was aware of reports calling for Unger to possibly miss the start of the regular season and his response was, “Don’t get me started.”

Former LSU star Alex Bregman is making big news in the baseball world today as last night he clubbed a first-inning grand slam, the first of his pro career, to help the Astros beat the Yankees 10-7 in New York. And it was all in front of his idol, former Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter who had his No. 2 jersey retired Sunday. Bregman also wears No. 2.

The LSU softball team has been selected as the NO. 13 overall seed for the NCAA Championships and will host the Baton Rouge Regional this weekend with UL-Lafayette, McNeese State and Fairfield. All three teams come in as conference champions. Louisiana Tech softball, also conference champions, will be headed to the Tuscaloosa Regional as the No.3 seed.

That’s according to Jim Beam, retired editor of the Lake Charles American Press, who has covered the capitol for decades, and says he’s never seen anything like it. Beam blames partisan politics, especially in the House Ways and Means Committee…:

Today is the last day for residents to file their 2016 Louisiana individual income tax returns. State Department of Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson says the easiest way to file is with Louisiana File Online, where taxpayers can file their state returns for free and make payments.

The website to file online is revenue-dot-louisiana-dot-gov-slash-file-online (revenue.louisiana.gov/fileonline). Robinson says there are some tornado related extensions for certain areas affected.

Pollster Bernie Pinsonat says Republicans really like the President with 91 percent giving him a favorable approval rating. But he says that’s a stark contrast to how Democrats feel.

The poll finds two-thirds of white voters approve of the President’s job performance with 25 percent saying he’s doing an excellent job. Seventy-two percent of Democrats disapprove of Mr. Trump’s job performance.

Opinions are similarly split on the Affordable Care Act. Pinsonat says only 8 percent of respondents would keep the ACA as it is now. He says that’s a more popular opinion among Democrats in Washington.

Most Democrats want to see Obamacare improved. Thirteen percent of respondents said they’d prefer the ACA to be repealed and not replaced. Pinsonat says many Louisiana Republicans agree with the GOP’s position, but not as strongly in the Bayou State as on the national level.

The bill by Shreveport Representative Thomas Carmody would prohibit the removal of any military monument from any war without approval from a majority of voters. Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell also supports the proposal. She says this bill is a response to the Confederate monuments being removed in New Orleans, but these veterans’ blood was shed for the country as a whole, and that is timeless…:

Beam says the goals coming into the session were to reform the state’s tax structure, make changes to the criminal justice system and raise money to avoid a 1.3 billion dollar fiscal cliff. He says House Republicans refuse to pass legislation recommended by Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards.

A 35-year-old man is facing three counts of attempted first degree murder after shooting at law enforcement during a standoff in Avoyelles Parish. State Trooper Scott Moreau says Brandon Carpenter of Elizabeth barricaded himself inside a Moreauville home and he began firing at officers during negotiations.

The trooper shot has been identified as 26-year-old Nick Ducote. Ducote has been with LSP for over two years and is expected to make a full recovery.

A Village of Tangipahoa crash took the lives of two people, including former Mayor and retired NFL player Michael Dyson. State Police Trooper Dustin Dwight says 48-year old Dyson was riding on his motorcycle at a high rate of speed when he hit Destiny Gordon’s vehicle.

The National Retail Federal finds consumers are spending more than even on Mom for this Mother’s day. The survey found 56 percent of consumers plan to spend a combined $4 billion on special outings like dinner or brunch, and 69 percent of consumers will buy over $2 billion in flowers. NRF Spokesperson Anna Serafin Smith says a lot of moms are hoping to get some sparkle on their special day.

The food delivery app, Waitr, is opening a permanent facility in Lafayette. Waitr CEO Chris Meaux says when they opened its initial Lafayette site at the Opportunity Machine, supported by the Lafayette Economic Development Authority, it allowed them to focus on their growth without worrying about the details.

An accident in St. Gabriel between an ambulance and truck sent all involved to the hospital. Just before 9 o’clock last night, on Highway 30, an ambulance with its sirens and lights on collided with a pickup truck. St. Gabriel Police Chief Kevin Ambeau credits the crash to power outages which affected traffic signals. Two medics and the driver of the truck were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and one person was extracted from the ambulance.

State Police says a crash in the Villiage of Tangipahoa took the lives of two people, including the former Mayor and retired NFL player Michael Dyson. Trooper Dustin Dwight says 48-year-old Dyson was riding his motorcycle down US 51 at a high rate of speed.

Dwight says although Dyson was wearing a DOT approved helmet and Gordon was wearing her seat belt, both died in the collision.

Michael Papierski’s (Puh-pear-ski’s) two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference as the LSU Tigers defeated Auburn five to three to win the series. LSU had a 3-0 lead, but Auburn tied it by scoring one run in the 6th inning and two more in the 7th inning and then Papierski hit the two run shot to win the game. Zach Watson also hit a two-run homer for the Tigers and Zach Hess was the winning pitcher, while Hunter Newman earned his 8th save. LsU goes for the sweep this afternoon at noon. They remain a half-game back of Florida and Mississippi State for the overall in the SEC.
The Ragin Cajuns scored two runs in the eighth to beat Texas State 8 to 7. A throwing error by the Bobcats was the difference in this game. JOe Robbins drove in three runs and Dylan Moore earned the win in relief.
Troy trounced ULM nine to one.

 
For the 18th time this season, Louisiana Tech came from behind to win a game. Jordan Washam had two doubles to lead the way in a 7-5 win over Marshall. Casey Sullvian was the winning pitcher, his first of the season.
In the Southland, McNeese defeated Creighton five to one, The Cowboys snapped a one-one tie by scoring four runs in the 9th inning. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak.
Northwestern State knocked off Abilene Christian 10-3. Demon hitters drew 12 walks. UNO upended Nicholls State six to two. Shawn Semple won his eighth game of the season.
southeastern Louisiana and Central Arkansas were rained out, they’ll play a doubleheader at 2 PM today.
The state high school baseball tournament wraps up today. Yesterday, Elizabeth, Choudrant, Grace Christian and Ascension Episcopal all won state championships last yesterday.
Today’s Five-A title game will be West Monroe versus Central, the 4A title game is Tioga versus Neville. The two-A title contest is Sterlington versus Lakeside.

An Avoyelles Parish man is behind bars on attempted murder charges following a standoff with police officers. State Trooper Scott Moreau says Brandon Carpenter barricaded himself inside a residence and fired at officers. He says Carpenter was taken into custody after the standoff that left three officers wounded.
