The Louisiana SPCA advises parents to put chocolate bunnies instead of real bunnies in Easter baskets. Spokesperson Deepak Saini (Dee-pahk San-ee) says giving a child a rabbit for Easter sounds like a good idea, but many don’t realize the huge responsibility and the amount of care these animals need.

The burning of M6 propellant at Camp Minden in Webster Parish is now complete, but the job might not be over just yet. The Louisiana National Guard could extend their contract with ESI and allow them to continue to burn off hazardous substances there. But LSU Shreveport science professor Brian Salvatore, who sits on the concerned citizens’ advisory board, wants the burning to stop now.

Ole Miss played home run derby at Alex Box Stadium last night. The Rebels pounded out four home runs against Jared Poche and Ole Miss went on to win 4-1. All four home runs were solo shots as Poche allowed just five hits. He also struck out eight. But after scoring 15 runs on Thursday, LsU was held to seven hits. The rubber game of the series is at 2 PM this afternoon.

The Ragin Cajuns clinched a series victory as UL Lafayette defeated Arkansas State 13-2. Big night for Steven Sensley as he hit two home runs and drove in five runs.

ULM committed six errors in a nine-five loss to Texas State. Louisiana Tech started its series with a 7-3 win over Old Dominion. Senior Chase Lunceford homered in the victory. Right-hander Casey Sutton won his fifth game of the season.

McNeese State won its sixth straight as the Cowboys upended uNo five to three last night. Senior Matt Gallier’s two run homer was the difference.

Southeastern Louisiana hit three home runs as the Lions edged Northwestern State three to two. Drew Avans, Carson Crites and Ryan Byers all each home runs.

Nicholls lost a tough game as UIW edged the Colonels five to four. Grambling clinched a series victory over Southern as the Tigers topped the Jaguars eight to five and Tulane topped Connecticut 3-1. Sal Gozzo drove in two runs with a double.

LSU gymnastics had a stellar performance in St. Louis last night and they will be one of six teams competing for a national championship tonight. The Tigers recorded the highest team score last night. LSU also recorded a school record with its team score on the floor and set an NCAA championship record for its score on the vault.

That’s Chris Blair on the LSU Sports Radio Network, who was on the call for the 15-2 victory over the Ole Miss Rebels. LSU can win the series tonight with another win over the Rebels. Jared Poche will start on the hill for the Tigers and before the game the jersey of LSU great Todd Walker will be retired.

Louisiana Tech begins a three-game series against Old Dominion tonight. Tech is seeking its second consecutive Conference USA series victory. The Ragin Cajuns blanked Arkansas State eight to nothing last night. UL Lafayette will go for the series win tonight.

In the Southland, McNeese State, Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State were all winners last night.

The NCAA has given its blessing to an early signing period for high school football players. It would allow recruits to sign with the school of their choice in December, instead of February. The Collegiate Commissioners Association still has to approve the change. The Division One Council also supports a proposal to abolish two-a-day practices in August.

In the NFL…former Saints assistant coach Joe Vitt has been hired as a consultant for the Dolphins. Vitt is Miami head coach Adam Gase’s father-in-law.

The LSU gymnastics team seeks its first national title in program history as they are one of the favorites to win at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis this weekend. Head Coach D-D Breaux says the girls have a lot of confidence after winning the school’s first SEC title since 1981…

The Humane Society of Louisiana is trying to figure out who is responsible for apparently dragging a pit bull from a moving vehicle in Acadia Parish near St. Landry. Executive Director Jeff Dorson says the 3-year-old dog was found by its owner in a ditch with horrible injuries..:

Dorson says the owner didn’t have the resources to care for the dog, so their members raised over $800 to help pay for the dog’s care. He says they have no idea who could have done such a thing to a helpless animal…:

Saini recommends giving kids a basket with marshmallow chicks or candy rabbits. He says every year hundreds of rabbits are abandoned after Easter.

Saini advises parents to do their research if they do decide to purchase a bunny as a pet, because they live up to 15 years and they require as much care as a cat or dog. He says plus your home needs to be bunny-proofed…

Salvatore says when he spoke with Major General Glenn Curtis, who leads the Louisiana National Guard, he didn’t want to comment on whether the burn chamber will continue to operate on the Guard’s property. He says the Webster Parish Police Jury passed a resolution in December calling on the company to remove the burn chamber. But he says they voted again last week and decided to rescind the resolution.

Salvatore says the members he spoke to simply said they were neutral and no longer wanted to be involved. But he says a much higher ranking state official will have the ultimate say in the matter.

With Easter coming a few weeks later this year, holiday spending is expected to reach record highs. Anna Serafin Smith with the National Retail Federation says their annual survey finds 80 percent of consumers will celebrate Easter, spending a record total of over $18 billion. That’s a six percent increase over last year.

Smith says customers will spend an average of $152 per person on Easter, including food, clothing, candy and gifts. She says 87 percent of shoppers will spend a combined nearly $6 billion on food. Clothing spending is at its highest level in a decade, with 50 percent of consumers planning to buy new Easter attire.

Their report also finds 89 percent of consumers plan to spend a total of $2.6 billion on candy. A survey from Offers.com finds Reese’s egg are Louisianan’s favorite Easter candy. Sixty-one percent of shoppers plan to spend almost $3 billion on gifts for Easter. Smith says that’s because outside of Christmas, this is the only other holiday that allows the whole family to chip in.

A Kentwood man is dead after another man pulled a knife in a bar fight in Metairie. Authorities say they found 53-year-old Braun Schneider dead from multiple stab wounds in the parking lot of Westgate Tavern. Deputies reportedly arrested 52-year-old Christopher Farley in connection with the murder.

Camp Minden has finished burning off the M6 propellant, but they now have the option to burn other hazardous materials. Sophomore left fielder Antoine Duplantis broke out of an 0-for-14 slump by going 4-for-4 last night, with three runs scored and four RBIs to help the Tigers rout the Ole Miss Rebels 15 to 2. Greg Deichmann also hit his second career grand slam. LSU is now 8-5 in the SEC, but in fourth place in the West Division. Arkansas and Auburn both won last night to remain in first place.

The Ragin Cajuns blanked Arkansas State eight to nothing yesterday to remain one game back of UT Arlington for first place in the West Division of the Sun Belt. ULM had a nice six to five win over Texas State to improve to 5-8 in league play.

McNeese won its fifth straight with a five to nothing shutout over UNO. Southeastern Louisiana has won two in a row after blancking Northwestern State two to nothing. Nicholls defeated Incarnate Word four to one, and Grambling defeated Southern 15-4.

Former LSU linebacker Kendell Beckwith told the Advocate Newspaper he has visited with the Saints. Beckwith is in Indianapolis for a medical recheck of his surgically repaired knee. It’s standard for injured draft eligible players to get their injuries rechecked right before the draft.

Three former Tigers will be in Philadelphia for the first round of the draft on April 27th. They are Jamal Adams, Leonard Fournette and Tre’Davious White. Adams and Fournette are expected to be top ten picks and White should be drafted in the first round too.
