A report on human trafficking showed a 25 percent increase in victims over the past year, with 447 reports in 2017, compared to 357 in 2016. That’s according the the Department of Children and Family Services. Child Welfare Consultant Walter Fahr says the primary reason for the jump could be that the state is doing a better job of identifying victims..:

UL-Lafayette extended its win streak to five games as the Cajuns defeated Southeastern 9-2 last night. It was Lions’ starter Derrick Mount’s first loss of the season after surrendering four runs on eight hits to the Cajuns. UL-Lafayette returns to action this weekend at Little Rock. Southeastern will split a series against rival Nicholls.

In a game that last nearly four hours, Louisiana Tech railed from an early deficit to claim a 10-6 victory over Little Rock. The Diamond Dogs host Conference USA-foe UAB this weekend.

The New Orleans Saints 2017 schedule will be revealed tonight. The NFL regular season lineup will be announced in a two-hour show beginning at 7pm on the NFL Network.

The NBA playoffs are in full swing and former Louisiana Tech star Paul Millsap, of the Atlanta Hawks, posted a team-high 27 points and 10 rebounds across 35 minutes in a 109-101 Game 2 loss to the Wizards on Wednesday.

It didn’t take long for former LSU men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones to find a new gig. As it were, Jones was hired to be an assistant under Nevada’s head basketball coach, Eric Mussleman — who was an assistant under Jones in 2015 when the Tigers went to the NCAA Tournament.

Two different bills have been filed seeking to protect confederate monuments around the state. New Orleans is attempting to hire a contractor to take down Civil War era structures.

DOTD reports that work continued through the night on I-10 in West Baton Rouge Parish where a fiery and deadly crash involving 18-wheelers shut down the roadway for about 6 hours Wednesday. State Police say the wreck involved 5 vehicles, including the big rigs, and 7 people. One person was killed and the others sustained minor to moderate injuries.

Drivers could see a hike in the gasoline tax, if a bill by Baton Rouge Representative Steve Carter is approved by the legislature. He says his proposed 17 cent hike would generate 500 million dollars a year for new projects.

The bill requires the state to use at least half of the money to begin construction on new megaprojects, like a new bridge in Baton Rouge.

A bill that would allow public school students to bring sunscreen to school and apply it on their own is heading to the House floor. Ville Platte Representative Harvey LeBas says skin cancer is a major problem and the goal of his bill is to protect kids from sunburns when they go outside for school activities.

The emergency declaration will be sent to President Trump to raise awareness about this crisis and expedite restoration projects. If nothing is done to protect the coast, Louisiana stands to lose an estimated 22-hundred square miles of coastal land in the next 50 years.

North Louisiana is known for its great locations for bass fishing, which is why the Lt. Governor’s office in partnership with the office of tourism and state parks has announced the launch of the Louisiana Bass Trail. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says the trail includes 7 lakes at 8 state parks and he believes this will help attract recreational fishermen from all over.

Nungesser says this year is the 100th anniversary of the National Park System, and they want to use this as a chance to promote the great outdoors in the Bayou State. The Lt. Governor hopes the trail can also help get more kids involved in the outdoors and fishing. He says kids who embark on the Bass Trail will be given “bassports,” complete with information about all of the stops on the trail.

Governor John Bel Edwards says the state should not get involved in the city of New Orleans’ decision to remove confederate monuments. The city is attempting to hire a contractor to take down three Confederate statues and a monument that commemorates an attack by a white supremacists. Edwards was asked on his monthly call-in radio show and he says it’s not something they’ve focused on at the state level.

Louisianans from all corners of the state have voiced their opinions on social media. Groups like Take Em Down NOLA and others have hosted rallies celebrating the removal of the monuments, while others have fought to keep them in place. But Edwards says it isn’t the state’s place to get involved.

Sex trafficking cases reported in Louisiana rose by 25-percent last year. That’s according to a report by the state Department of Children and Family Services. Child Welfare Consultant Walter Fahr says of that number 45-percent of those victims were juvenile. He says the highest number of human trafficking reports came from Orleans and Caddo Parishes.

A six run second inning last night helped LSU defeat Lamar 10-4. Nick Coomes and Josh Smith hit back-to-back home runs to start the rally. Lamar made it 6-4 in the fourth inning, but got no closer as Austin Bain, Nick Bush, Zach Hess and Hunter Newman all pitched well out of the bullpen. The Tigers are at Kentucky this Saturday. The Wildcats lead the SEC East with a 10-5 record.

In action tonight, Southeastern Louisiana is visiting the Ragin Cajuns. UL Lafayette blanked Tulane one to nothing last night. Louisiana Tech won a thriller over McNeese State last night. The Bulldogs scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for an eight to seven win. Tonight the Bulldogs are at Little Rock. and Tulane hosts Southern Miss.

In softball action….16th ranked LSU ended a four game losing streak with a five to two win over Northwestenr State. The Tigers are 33-12 and ranked 16th in the ESPN.com-USA Softball. UL Lafayette is ranked 18th.

Former LSU basketball coach Johnny Jones has a new job. Jones has accepted an assistant coaching job at Nevada. Eric Musselman is the head coach of the Wolfpack and he served as an assistant for Jones in the 2014-15 seasons. Former LSU Tiger Ronald Dupree is also an assistant at Nevada.

Junior college combo guard Daryl Edwards has signed a national letter of intent with LSU. He shot 47-percent from three at Northwest Florida State College a year ago and averaged nearly 14 points a game. Edwards chose the Tigers over Iowa State, Utah and UNLV.

Bill Davis nine people, including four females, traveled in from Little Rock in the back of a U-Haul. Davis says a local man allowed his apartment to be rented out for prostitution.

Bossier Parish Sheriff deputies arrest five individuals from Little Rock and a Bossier City teen for their role in sex trafficking case, where the victims were brough into Louisiana in a U-haul truck. Lt. Bill Davis says 18-year-old Antwan Lay of Bossier City is the local man arrested for letting the prostitution take place at his apartment…

The DeSoto Parish Coroner’s office says Cameron Anthony Hernandez from Diana, Texas, was killed when a tank exploded near Mansfield yesterday. A crew was working at the site to clean damage caused by a recent storm.

The Caddo Sheriff’s Office says a nearly 11 foot long alligator shut down traffic on La Highway 1 for nearly an hour early this morning. They said a passer by reported the gator sighting in the middle of the road about 330am and that its tail had been run over by an 18-wheeler. Trappers were called to remove the animal.

Six people have been arrested in Bossier City for human trafficking as a result of an undercover prostitution operation. Bossier Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Lt. Bill Davis says nine people, including four females, traveled in from Little Rock in the back of a U-Haul. Davis says a local man allowed his apartment to be rented out for prostitution.
