The Baton Rouge Advocate reports LSU offensive coordinator Matt Canada’s annual salary will be 1.5 million dollars, making him one of the highest-paid assistants in college football.

And other piece of LSU football news, defensive tackle Travonte Valentine has been kicked off the team. He only played in five games last season.

Alabama running back Derrick Gore says he will transfer to ULM. The redshirt sophomore had 18 carries for 93 yards and one touchdown last season. The Syracuse, New York, native will sit out the 2017 season, but he’ll have two years of eligibility after that.

Northwestern State released its 2017 schedule and the Demons will begin the year visiting Louisiana Tech and Grambling. Northwestern will have five Southland home games.

There are three men’s college basketball games in the state tonight. Louisiana Tech takes on Rice, UNO battles Houston Baptist and Nicholls faces Abilene Christian.

She says in April they will also make renovations to Mike’s habitat, so that it can be accredited as a tiger sanctuary…

The Louisiana National Guard’s 773rd Military Police Battalion is in Washington D.C. to assist in security for the 58th Presidential Inauguration tomorrow. More than 170 soldiers with the state’s National Guard will conduct security operations along the parade route, accompanied by Guardsmen from Kansas and South Dakota. This is the first time the 773rd has been a part of a presidential inauguration.

The leader of the state House Republican delegation has offered a plan to reduce state spending by 304-million dollars in order to alleviate a midyear shortfall. Alexandria Representative Lance Harris is proposing 147-million dollars in cuts to the health department, also cuts to state prisons, roadwork and K-through-12 education. Harris tells the Associated Press that Republicans are not proposing any cuts to public colleges.

The state budget deficit for the current fiscal year has dropped to $304 million; from $313 million. So what does this mean for Louisiana’s colleges and universities? Higher Ed Commissioner Joe Rallo says if lawmakers decide against tapping into the Rainy Day Fund to help plug the budget hole, it could be detrimental to post-secondary schools..:

The Baton Rouge Metro Airport has already received three inches of rain; and Zachary 5 inches. There’s also a slight risk for severe weather in the Houma and New Orleans areas.

Baton Rouge Police are looking for information leading to the arrest of a person who killed a 15-year-old girl driving in her car last night. Sgt. Don Coppola says Au’Miracle McElwee and the passengers in her car were talking to people in the Glen Oaks area when gunfire erupted..:

Former LSU Running back Leonard Fournette has been getting ready for the NFL draft in Florida. He could be a top five pick. Fournette says he’ll go to any team that wants him and he will not lobby to be the top overall pick…

The Baton Rouge Advocate reports new LSU offensive coordinator Matt Canada will make one-point-five million dollars a year, while former West Georgia Head Coach Will Hall is the Ragin Cajuns new offensive coordinator. The third one they’ve had in as many years.

The LSU men’s basketball team fell to 1-5 in the SEC with a 78-74 loss to Auburn last night. The defeat spoiled a good effort from former Tioga standout Aaron Epps, who had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

In other action…Tulane is now 1-5 in the American Athletic Conference after an 89-82 loss to Tulsa. McNeese State beat Central Arkansas 82-72. Kaleb Ledoux led McNeese with 17 points and Jamaya Burr had 15 points and nine assists.

In the NBA…the Pelcians had an easy time beating the Orlando Magic 118-98 last night. Anthony Davis led the way with 21 points and he was not needed in the fourth quarter. Langston Galloway and Tyreke Evans each added 18 points. Former Ragin Cajun Elfrid Payton had 14 in a losing effort.

Tonight, Louisiana Tech hosts Rice. The Bulldogs are 4-1 in Conference USA and they are in a three-way tie for second place in the CUSA standings.
