A low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico near the Florida coast could bring heavy rains to southeast Louisiana by the end of the week. Michael Hill with the National Weather Service in Slidell says the system is not a tropical disturbance yet, but it will push some rain into Louisiana.

Hill says the New Orleans metro area and surrounding parishes will be the hardest hit by the rains.

Just a few days after signing with the Atlanta Falcons, wide receiver Lance Moore has announced his retirement, ending his 10-year NFL career. Moore spent seven seasons in New Orleans and played in 101 games starting in 2007. During his time in the Big Easy, he caught 346 passes for 4,281 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Reporters have not had a chance to speak with LSU Quarterback Brandon Harris yet about fall camp, but his teammates believe Harris and the Tigers passing game is ready to take off this year. Here’s Junior wide out Malachi Dupre…

Louisiana Tech quarterback Ryan Higgins will not start in the season opener against Arkansas because he was arrested last Friday on a DWI charge. Coach Skip Holtz says his senior signal caller will also undergo counseling, drinking and driving education and community service.

Holtz is disappointed in Higgins’ decision to drive drunk, but he’s happy former Oklahoma wide receiver Adrian Hardy is on the roster, because of what he brings to the field…

The family of the wounded East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Deputy who is still in the hospital posted an update on Facebook saying he is now breathing on his own without the help of a breathing machine. Deputy Nick Tullier was shot in the head and stomach in the ambush that took the lives of three officers and injured two others. Tullier’s father Nick wrote that “every day is a miracle” and asks that people continue to pray for his son.

UL-Lafayette political science professor Pearson Cross says he’s be surprised if we saw a voter turnout as high as 55% because of people’s distaste for the candidates. He says there’s a chance that the Democrats in the Senate race might benefit from Trump’s unpopularity.

The market research firm Euromonitor projects Americans will buy 27 gallons of bottled water this year and just 26 gallons of soda. LSU Health New Orleans Professor of Family Medicine Herbert Muncie says that’s the first time Americans have ever been expected to buy more water than soft drinks, and he expects that trend to continue. He says many people are switching to bottled water because of the recent tap water quality scares in other states.

Feral hogs are contaminating bodies of water between Alexandria and Natchitoches, according to research from LSU. Dr. Michael Kaller with the LSU School of Renewable Resources says pathogens from the hogs waste can pose serious health risks to humans.

Political pundits are considering how the presidential race might affect the US Senate election in Louisiana. UL-Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross expects the GOP candidates in the race will stay away from supporting Donald Trump as his numbers continue to drop in polls:

He says it could help democratic Senate candidates that Hillary Clinton is leading in the national polls.

Many Parishes spanning parts of northwest Louisiana to the Monroe area are under a heat advisory until 7pm this evening. The National Weather Service says humidity levels and hot temperatures could generate a heat index between 105 to 110 once again this afternoon.

The Causeway bridge is completely shut down in both directions Monday morning because of reports of a vehicle that went over the side in Lake Pontchartrain.

State police say a fatal crash in Ascension Parish claimed the live of a Prairieville man who wasn’t buckled up. They say 47-year-old Bart Todd crossed a center line into the other side of the road, then crashed into a culvert. He was unrestrained and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash.

Former Governor Edwin Edwards celebrated his 89th birthday with his family on Sunday, and The Cajun Prince says he feels better than ever. Edwards believes he’ll live to see 100 and contributes that to his lifestyle..:

Katie Ledecky gave the US the first swimming gold of the Rio games last night in the women’s 400 meter freestyle. In the 4×100 meter freestyle, Michael Phelps picked up his 19th gold medal.

In gymnastics, LSU incoming freshman Ruby Harold – who competes for Great Britain, advanced to the finals.

So far, the US leads the medal count with 12 total.

Louisiana Tech is set to hold their first official team practice this afternoon, ahead of the season which begins September 3rd against Arkansas on the road. James Tullier says everyday Deputy Tullier lives is a miracle and he urges people to please keep praying. Today is the 22nd day Deputy Tullier has been in the hospital sine the attack that claimed the lives of three other officers.

LSU Health New Orleans Professor of Family Medicine Dr. Herbert Muncie says it’s good news that people are trying to stay away from high calorie sodas.

That’s the sound of jazz clarinetist and New Orleans music legend Pete Fountain, who has died at the age of 86. Fountain had faced health problems in recent years, including undergoing heart surgery and suffering a stroke. Fountain retired from his 60 year jazz career in 2014.

A motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Kentwood. Police say 42-year-old Robert Dykes of Franklinton was riding his motorcycle down LA 1055 when 76-year-old Henry Butler of Kentwood turned in front of him. The two vehicles collided and Dykes was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered severe injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a low-pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico. The system, which is just off the Florida panhandle, has a chance of developing over the next five days if it remains over the water.

LSU says they won’t be able to host Bayou Country Superfest at Tiger Stadium for the next couple of years due to renovations that need to be made during the off season. Visit Baton Rouge President Paul Arrigo says it’s disappointing, but they are glad LSU was nice enough to allow BCS to be held there for the past several years…;
