A longtime leader in state government died in a tragic two-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon in Natchitoches. 84-year-old Former state Representative Jimmy D. Long Sr. served in the House of Representatives for 32 years, and was on the UL-System Board of Supervisors for the past 15. Governor John Bel Edwards said Long dedicated his life to public service and embodied the hardworking spirit of Louisiana, and will be sorely missed.

State Treasurer John Kennedy, who has often been at odds with the governor, issued a statement thanking Edwards for calling on Brown to resign. Fellow Democrat Senator JP Morrell also called on Brown to leave the legislature because his recent altercations reflect a deficiency in judgement that undermines everything they’ve achieved in passing legislation that seeks to further protect domestic violence victims.

A flood watch is in effect for several southeastern Louisiana parishes through Friday, as forecasters a swirling area of low pressure to our east is expected to bring in widespread showers and storms. Andrew Ansorge is with the National Weather Service in Slidell…:

Today marks seven months since Governor John Bel Edwards was sworn into office. Jeremy Alford of LaPolitics.com says the governor carved out a place for himself in the record books from day one. He says Edwards pretty much had the House against him as he is the first governor in modern history to not have his choice selected as speaker.

Alford says even with everything stacked against him, he has never taken is eyes off of the goal of being reelected. He says Edwards quickly had to become a governor who dealt with one crisis after another.

A flood watch is in effect for several southeastern Louisiana parishes through Friday, as forecasters say abundant tropical moisture aligned with the Gulf Coast will create heavy rains. But Brown reportedly says he will not resign from the legislature. The senator was arrested last month on a misdemeanor domestic abuse battery charge for allegedly biting his wife on the arm. That arrest comes just 8 months after he was arrested for simple battery in New Orleans for allegedly punching his mistress in the face.

State Police are seeking a suspect in a crash that resulted in Interstate 10 being closed in Baton Rouge for over 12 hours. Trooper Bryan Lee says on August 5 a red Ford Fusion struck an 18-wheeler, causing it to overturn. He says the truck driver sustained minor injuries, and the other driver fled on foot…:

Lee says the suspect is a white male with long blonde and brown hair and tattoos covering both arms and legs.

The Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office along with the Human Society rescued 27 dogs and 11 cats from a filthy home in Bunkie. Sheriff Doug Anderson says in July, they received a call that animals were being neglected at the home of Maxine and Gordan Doughty, so they began an investigation. He says when authorities returned to check on the animals a week later, the conditions were deplorable….:

LSU’s defense looks to have taken a major hit this week as multiple reports indicate that Senior Christian LaCouture, a starter at defensive end, could be out for the season with a knee injury. But as far as a replacement, this major blow could be softened by the potential return of 340-pound former Tiger Travonte Valentine, who told 247Sports that’d he’d been cleared to begin practicing. LSU has yet to confirm this. LaCouture played in 11 games with 10 starts in his junior year.

Athlon Sports ranked the top 50 running back units for 2016 and not surprisingly, LSU earned the No. 1 spot thanks to Leonard Fournette. They said only two opponents held Fournette under 100 yards, and his 162.8-yards-per-game average was the best in the nation. Oklahoma took the No. 2 spot, followed by Florida State, Stanford and Oregon at 3, 4 and 5 respectively.

There’s a buzz in the sports world today over the news reported by ESPN that 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow will hold a workout for Major League Baseball teams this month. He played in high school.

Fox Sports has ranked the top 20 coaches in college football for 2016, and LSU coach Les Miles finished at NO. 13. Nick Saban took the top spot.

Authorities in Livingston Parish are responding to a log truck that was hit by a train shortly before 3 this afternoon. The wreck happened near Florida Blvd. Injuries have been reported and AirMed was sent to the scene.

Baton Rouge Police are looking for a suspect on the levee who fled from authorities. The man was in a vehicle pursuit with police near Nicholson on Highland road. He then jumped out of the tan Toyota he was driving on River Road near the Mississippi River bridge and fled on foot.

Small business optimism in Louisiana only increased by one tenth of a point in July, according to the National Federation for Independent Business. NFIB state director Dawn Starns says she is hopeful things will look up when we near the election in the fall and believes lawmakers will address this in the April legislative session.

Police are searching for a suspect in a crash that caused an 18-wheeler to overturn on I-10 in Baton Rouge, closing the interstate for over 12 hours. Trooper Bryan Lee says the suspect fled the scene on foot, but once he is apprehended, he will face multiple charges.

Troopers believe the vehicle the suspect was driving was stolen.
