Legal Analyst Chick Foret says the victim’s family is happy with Sanchez’s sentencing, because the trial of Speaks was a fiasco…

Two Alabama football players arrested in Monroe on gun and drug possession charges will not be prosecuted. Ouachita Parish District Attorney Jerry Jones made that decision. Back in May, former northeast Louisiana prep stars Cameron Robinson and Hootie Jones were arrested after a Monroe police officer allegedly found them smoking pot inside a vehicle at Forsythe Park. DA Jerry Jones told KNOE that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute. In addition, Jones told the Monroe TV station that he refuses to ruin the lives of two young men who have spent their adolescence and teenager years, working and sweating, while were all at home in the air conditioning.

In other news out of north Louisiana, multiple media outlets are reporting Northwestern State’s Lane Burroughs will be the next head coach of the Louisiana Tech baseball program. Burroughs only led the Demons to 16 wins in his first season, but the last three years, Northwestern finished near the top of the Southland standings.

Pelicans General Manager Dell Demps spoke with the media for the first time today, since the end of the regular season. There’s been a lot of speculation about Demps’ future with the team after a disastrous 2015-16 season. Demps told the media he wants to be with the Pelicans as long as they want him. He also expects center Omer Asik to report to training camp next fall in better shape. Demps says Asik hurt his back prior to last season and never fully recovered.

Former LSU pitcher John Valek the third has signed a free-agent deal with the Colorado Rockies. Valek was 6-and-2 with a 4.04 ERA this past season.

Former LSU pitcher Kevin Gausman goes after his first win of the season tonight as the Orioles face the Texas Rangers in a battle of first place teams. Gausman is 0-4 this year for Baltimore. Derek Holland starts for the Rangers.

The number of food stamp recipients is increasing in Louisiana, while that rate is falling nationwide. The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services says nearly one in five Louisiana residents are on the federal food assistance program. Director of the Louisiana Budget Project, Jan Moller, says that increase is due to job loss in the oil and gas industry because low oil prices hurt Louisiana’s economy more than other states.

According to DCFS, the number of food stamp recipients jumped 9% from April 2015 to April 2016. Some southern parishes saw that rate increase even more, up 37% in Jefferson parish, 26% in St. Martin, and 90% in Cameron. Moller says those rates should go down when oil prices come back up.

Moller says hopefully these people will not be on the program for long, as the average recipient gets food stamps for nine months. He says we should all be happy that there’s a program to help people get through these tough times.

32-year-old Margaret Sanchez has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2012 death and dismemberment of the former Bourbon Street dancer Jaren Lockhart. She also pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in a Jefferson Parish courtroom and was sentenced to 40 years. Legal analyst Chick Foret says the case is now over and the family finally has closure…:

Pelicans General Manager Dell Demps met with the media today for the first time since the season ended. There’s been speculation about Demps’ job status but Demps said today he’s always felt welcomed and the reason why he didn’t hold an end of season presser is because there was nothing to say at that time. Demps added that he believes the team will get a good player with the sixth pick on Thursday night and that if free agents want to return to New Orleans, it has to be a win-win situation for the Pelicans.

Sains fans know how Cleveland sports fans feel today. The Cavaliers 93-89 win over the Warriors last night clinched the first major sports championship in the city of Cleveland in 52 years. Saints fans had to wait 42 years for its first and only Super Bowl.

Tulane Baseball Coach David Pierce has reportedly interviewed for the head coaching position at Texas. Pierce just led the Green Wave to a 41-21 record and a second seed in the Oxford Regional, where they lost to Boston College. Houston’s Todd Whitting has also interviewed for the job, while LSU’s Paul Mainieri was also approached by Texas, but decided to stay in Baton Rouge.

At the College World Series…Coastal Carolina, who beat LSU in the super regionals, knocked off Florida two to one last night. Zach Remillard drove in both of Coastal’s runs, while Andrew Beckwith struck out seven to get the win.

In action today…UC Santa Barbara faces Miami in an elimination contest, while Oklahoma State takes on Arizona in a winner’s bracket contest tonight.

IN the meajor leagues…Texas now has an 8.5 game lead for first place in the AL West after beating St. Louis 4-3 yesterday. Tonight the Rangers host Baltimore, who is in first place in the A-L East. Former LSU Tiger Kevin Gausman is on the mound for the Orioles.

They say neighbors reported the toddlers mother contacted them looking for the kids and that’s when they were found in a truck at the home a short time later. Oliver and Aria Orr were pronounced dead. The matter is under investigation.

A man from Galliano man was killed in a single vehicle crash in Livingston Parish last night. State Police say 57-year-old Brian Leonard failed to make a right curve near Springfield and lost control of his car. They say Leonard ran off the road, struck a culvert and went airborne striking a tree. He was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. He wasn’t buckled up, and impairment is unknown at this time.

If you count today, there are four days left in the special session and there are only two bills left for lawmakers to consider that would raise revenues to cover a 600 to 800-million dollar shortfall. So far legislators have agreed to tax changes that would generate 214-million dollars. Alexandria Representative Lance Harris says many lawmakers believe they’ve raised enough revenue…

Without anymore tax increases, higher education, health care, public schools and TOPS face significant cuts.
