A bill that would prohibit open burning of explosives and munitions could be withdrawn from the regular session. There’s opposition from a company called Clean Harbors, which has a location near Colfax that open burns. Minden Rep. Gene Reynolds says he’s talked with Clean Harbors and the state department of environmental quality….

Reynolds says if lawmakers and Clean Harbors are able to come up with a reliable solution, the bill will no longer be necessary.

Key members of the Governor’s staff are in St. Joseph today, where  brown water is flowing from faucets in the Tensas Parish town. The governor’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Julie Baxter Payer, says they are there to inform St. Joseph residents about what’s being done to improve the drinking water…

Baxter Payer says there is $7.8 million available to repair the town’s water system, but unfortunately St. Joseph cannot receive the money, because it has yet to complete a 2015 financial audit. She says they are waiting on a court to approve a financial manager that will be assigned to improve the town’s financial records…

Residents of St. Joseph say the tap water has been pale yellow to murky brown for over 8 years. Baxter Payer hopes everyone will come out to their 5pm meeting to discuss the water.

We’re six months away from Louisiana’s U.S. Senate election and it’s been a slow race so far. That’s the opinion of ULM Political Science Professor, Dr. Joshua Stockley, who says we haven’t seen or heard much from the nine declared candidates. He says this election is very similar to last year’s governor’s election.

Stockley says we’ll see an uptick in attention to the race after the major party conventions in the summer. He says right now, many voters are focused on the state’s budget problems and the legislative session.

Stockley says the presidential election will likely play a role in who wins this Senate seat. He says right now, the favorites are any of the major Republican candidates.

The House Appropriations Committee will vote today on a proposed budget for next fiscal year that’s expected to fully fund the TOPS scholarship program. Governor John Bel Edwards proposed spending plan only allocated a third of the approximately 300-million dollars needed to fully cover tuition costs for eligible students. Chairman of the committee, Cameron Henry of Metairie, says that’s not enough….

If legislators fully fund TOPS that means 183-million dollars will be moved from other areas of the budget. Edwards says it would be great if the state can cover 100-percent of the costs for TOPS, but that will mean less state funding for hospitals, public education and state prisons…

But Henry says TOPS is a priority for a majority of House members and if state agencies receive less funding next fiscal year than they currently receive, they’ll have to make do…

After couple of wild victories on Friday and Saturday night, LSU had a normal win on Saturday as they defeated Arkansas 7-1 on Mother’s Day. A two-year-old girl is dead and authorities say a man who babysat the child is considered a person of interest in the case. Authorities say Willow Rain Renteria-Molina’s body was found in a remote area of Beauregard Parish. Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft says 33-year-old Rodney “Donnie” Bailey Junior was the last person to see her alive and he is in custody.

An LSU audit supports the university’s claims that its former band director Roy King improperly awarded musician scholarships to Golden Girls dance team and color guard. LSU released the aduit to the Advocate newspaper. King has filed a lawsuit against LSU over his recent firing.

A 36-year-old Lafayette woman has pleaded guilty to stealing gift guards whe she worked for the US Postal Service. Tonia Moore-Parker faces five years in prison. The US Attorney’s office says Moore-Parker opened five envelopes and stole gift guards worth 150-dollars.

There are three Cajun jockeys in today’s Kentucky Debry. Kent Desormeaux is riding one of the favorites, Exaggerator. Desormeaux is looking for his fourth Kentucky Derby win. Also, Corey Lanerie is aboard Mo Tom and Brian Hernandez Junior has the saddle for Tom’s Ready. Mo Tom and Tom’s Ready are owned by Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson.

Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Doctor Rebekah Gee is using Mother’s Day as a reminder for women, especially those over 40, to make sure they get annual mammograms and regular cervical cancer screenings…

Vernon Parish Sheriff authorities have announced that the body of a two-girl was found in a remote area in Beauregard Parish. Sheriff Sam Craft says 33-year-old Rodney “Donnie” Bailey Junior is considered a person of interest, as he was the last person to see Willow Rain Renteria-Molina of Hornbeck alive. Bailey would often babysit the child according to family members. Bailey is in custody as authorities have charged him with other crimes.

A study from the firm KPMG ranks north Louisiana has the most compeitive place to do business in the country. Scott Martinez, President of the North Louisiana Economic Partnership, says low utility costs is one reason why Monroe and Shreveport rank high on this list…

Tonight’s Powerball jackpot is $415 million. This is the second time this year the jackpot has surpassed 400-million dollars. Louisiana Lottery spokesperson Kim Chopin says the large jackpots have boosted ticket sales 50-percent from this time last year.

A 33-year-old man is in custody in connection with the death of a two-year-old child. Authorities found Willow Rain Renteria-Molina’s body of Hornbeck in a remote area of Beauregard Parish. Vernon Sheriff Sam Craft says Rodney “Donnie” Bailey Junior is considered a person of interest as he was the last person to see the little girl alive. Bailey is reportedly not cooperating with authorities, but he is in jail on several other charges, including gun possession by a convicted felon.

A 78-year-old Shreveport woman could face the next decade behind bars for cashing Social Security checks that were mistankenly sent to a dead man for nearly three decades. Rose Marie Jackson Allen will be sentenced in September after pleading guilty to theft of government property. Allen shared a post office box with a man who died in 1986, but the government kept sending him social security checks. It’s believed Allen collected over 200-thousand dollars in illegal benefits.

Tonight’s PowerBall jackpot is a whopping $415 million, the 7th largest prize in the game’s history. Louisiana Lottery spokeswoman Kimberly Chopin says this would be one heck of a Mother’s Day present…;

17th ranked LSU defeated Arkansas five to four last night. The game was tied at two in the sixth, when LSU took advantage of some control problems by Arkansas pitchers to take a 5-4 lead. Hunter Newman preserved the win for his third save. Alex Lange improved to 6-3 by throwing 7.1 innings and giving up three runs.

The 25th ranked Ragin Cajuns blanked Appalachian State seven-zip. Gunner Leger, Evan Guillory and Will Bacon combined to strikeout a season-high 14 batters. Guillory posted 7 Ks in three innings.

Troy topped ULM five to three. Louisiana Tech rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to double up Middle Tennessee eight to four. Ralph Gladu homered and drove in three runs. 16th ranked Tulane trounced South Florida 9-4. Jake Willsey blasted two home runs.

In the SWAC….Arkansas Pine-Bluff over Grambling in 10 innings, 4-3 and Texas Southern edged Southern 8-6.

Southeastern Louisiana trailed 5-1 last night but erased the deficit with 8 runs in the 5th inning and went on to beat Lamar 14-6. The Lions are now 19-3 in the Southland. Right fielder Ryan Byers tripled and homered and drove in five runs on the night.

Northwestern State beat Arkansas State in non-conference action. Adam Oller was the winning pitcher as he did not allow a hit for 6.1 innings.

Elsewhere…Stephen F Austin defeated McNeese 8-2, Abilene Christian was a six to one winner over UNO and Houston Baptist knocked off Nicholls eight to three.

In Class Five-A Baseball playoff action last night. These are all results from game one of their best three series. Top-seeded Barbe blanked 24th seeded St. Amant three to nothing. 3rd seeded Airline doubled up 11th seeded Byrd 8-4, 4th seeded Catholic High defeated Jesuit in 10 innings 5-4 and 15th seeded Acadiana knocked off 26th seeded Ruston 8-5.

Authorities say the body of a 2-year-old Vernon parish girl was found by a deputy in Beauregard Parish. Willow Rain Renteria-Molina of Hornbeck was reported missing at 11pm Thursday night. Police say 33-year old Rodney “Donnie” Bailey Jr was the last person to see the girl alive, and he is a person of interest in the investigation.

The Department of Health and Hospitals is advising women to get regular health exams, including mammograms.The American Cancer Society suggests women 45 to 54 should get yearly mammograms to detect breast cancer. DHH Secretary Rebekah Gee says many women are scared to get mammograms, but she says cancer isn’t a death sentence.

Governor John Bel Edwards says he supports a bill by Parks Senator Fred Mills that would expand the list of medical conditions that medical marijuana can be used to treat. But Edwards says he does not support the legalization of recreational pot use.

A bill to raise the minimum age for strippers is heading to the House for final legislative approval. It Amite Representative Robby Carter voted for the legislation in a House committee and is not a big fan of the exotic dance profession….

Under the legislation individuals between 18-and-20 could work in a strip club as a waitress or perform other jobs, but they could no longer work as a stripper. The city of New Orleans has already passed a similar ordinance.

There is a month left in the legislative session and lawmakers still have a lot to. Jeremy Alford with LaPolitics.com says the budget is the biggest concern for legislators. He says lawmakers are working to pass a balanced budget with a 600 million dollar shortfall before the session ends on June 6th and funding TOPS is a major priority.

The House Appropriations committee is expected to make changes to the proposed budget for next fiscal year on Monday and send the spending plan to the House floor. Alford also says one of the governor’s main bills for the session, a measure that raises the minimum wage, faces an uphill climb.

A Lafayette woman is facing multiple charges after she allegedly ran into a police officer with her vehicle. Authorities says 37-year-old Jennifer Shanahan was involved in a disturbance and was found sitting in her vehicle in a parking lot. According to police, officers asked Shanahan to exit her vehicle, instead she placed her vehicle in reverse and accelerated, hitting the officer who suffered a minor injury.

This morning prosecutors ruled that no charges will be filed in the fatal officer-involved shooting of a mentally-ill man last year. State Police say 32-year-old Michael Noel was shot and killed at his home in St. Martin parish while resisting officers who attempted to take him into protective custody. Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars says no one was charged in the incident, because there was no crime.

Noel’s mother, Barbara, told the Associated Press she is “furious” no criminal charges were handed down against the deputies.

No criminal charges will be filed in the fatal officer-involved shooting of a mentally-ill man, 32-year-old Michael Noel.
