An arrest has been made in connection with the dead body that was found in the median of Interstate 10 in Ascension Parish. Two days before the discovery, State Police say they responded to a crash in the same area where they located a truck with significant damage, but the driver, 25-year-old Brodnick Whittington, was not at the scene. Troopers tied Whittington to the hit and run death of 35-year-old Jenise Williams. He is charged with felony hit and run, obstruction of justice, and driving with an open container..

Governor John Bel Edwards is expected to sign legislation that would result in Louisiana becoming the sixth state in the nation to prohibit a commonly used second-trimester abortion procedure. Democratic Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden announces he’s running for Congress. Holden will challenge Democratic US Representative Cedric Richmond for the 2nd Congressional District seat. The outspoken former sheriff’s deputy from St. Landry Parish, Captain Clay Higgins, is expected to announce tonight that he’s also decided to run for Congress, either in the 3rd District or US Senate.

Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Dr. Rebekah Gee is slated to join Governor John Bel Edwards today for his monthly call-in radio show hosted by the Louisiana Radio Network. The governor’s office says they plan to discuss Medicaid expansion and talk with listeners about health and other issues of concern.

Two elementary coaches and three students have been charged amid allegations they were using “questionable disciplinary actions” against three younger students in St. Landry Parish. Major Eddie Thibodeaux says the PE teachers were allegedly telling the juvenile suspects to take other kids to the locker room and whip them with a belt. He says they also tried to cover it up which is why it’s important kids know they should tell their parents about stuff like this…:

Major changes have been made to the state’s sales tax holidays as a result of legislation approved in the special session. The Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax holiday which usually takes place the last weekend in May has been cancelled. And state department of revenue spokesperson Kizzy Payton says the back to school sales tax holiday, during the first weekend in August, and the 2nd amendment holiday, during the first weekend in September, will offer partial sales tax breaks this year and next…

A new study by LSU, UCLA, and NASA finds New Orleans and surrounding cities are sinking at high rates because of natural and human processes. Lead author of the report, Doctor Cathleen Jones, says the highest rates of sinking were observed upriver along the Mississippi around major industrial areas in Norco and Michoud. Jones says these kind of measurements can help in flood prevention planning…

State Police say a single vehicle crash in Rapides Parish claimed the life of a teenage passenger, and injured the driver – both unrestrained. They say 24-year-old Micah Baden of Pineville lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons, ran off the road and crashed into a semi-trailer in a private driveway. 16-year-old Chloe James of Ball was pronounced dead. Baden received moderate injuries.

A man who cops say was driving a Lamborghini drunk when he crashed into a New Orleans flood wall, killing a 23-year-old Baton Rouge woman in the front seat, has been charged with vehicular homicide in the incident. 30-year-old Jason Adams is accused of driving 118 miles per hour and having a blood/alcohol level that was over the legal limit when the fatal crash occurred May 4th, claiming the life of Kristi Lirette. Adams posted $75,000 bond.

A bill that calls on Louisiana to enforce surrogacy contracts was strongly approved by the Senate Tuesday. Currently, a baby born to a surrogate is considered that woman’s child. The proposed law would grant immediate custody of the baby to the genetic parents rather than the surrogate mother. The House has to approve minor changes before the measure heads to the governor’s desk where he says he’ll sign it.
