At LSU’s annual pro day Monday, players put on an impressive showing as linebacker Deion Jones ran a 4.38 40-yard dash and safety Jalen Mills a 4.48. Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis was in attendance there, and said free agency is not over for New Orleans. He wouldn’t comment on a possible contract extension with Drew Brees.

In college hoops news, it’s reported that LSU freshman star Ben Simmons has already decided to sign with an agent for his pro career. Speculation increased that Simmons would leave college to enter the NBA draft after the Tigers’ ended their season on Sunday evening.

Tulane has fired their men’s basketball coach, Ed Conroy. He finished off his 6th season on Saturday in a loss to Memphis in the semifinals of the American Men’s Basketball Championship.

Louisiana Tech isn’t done with basketball as the Bulldogs will take part in the inaugural Vegas 16 which is an 8 team, single elimination three day event. It’s slated for March 28-30 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

The ULM men’s basketball team begins their post-season today as the Warhawks travel to face Furman in the opening round of the CIT.

Also in the CIT, UL-Lafayette will host Southland Conference opponent Texas A&M Corpus Christ tomorrow.

In the NCAA tournament, Southern takes on Holy Cross Wednesday.

Former LSU basketball coach Trent Johnson was fired Monday by TCU after 4 seasons.

In college baseball, McNeese State will host ULM in a pair of mid-week contests today and tomorrow in Lake Charles. They school’s athletic department says it will be collecting canned goods during the games for those affected by floods in Northeast and Southwest Louisiana.

Tulane is at Nicholls, Grambling is at Arkansas, South Alabama is at Southeastern.

Lions left-hander Kyle Cedotal has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week. The senior from Denham Springs carried a perfect game into the 8th inning of SLU’s conference opener against UIW.

State officials are urging those with flood damage to go ahead and fill out the form for federal aid, even if your parish has not yet been declared a disaster area. You can fill out the FEMA form at emergency-dot-la-dot-gov. The state Department of Children and Family services is also encouraging those who have experienced loss to pre-register for benefits under the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

As lawmakers begin a regular session, Governor John Bel Edwards says another special session could be needed to address next fiscal year’s shortfall, which currently stands at about 800-million dollars. Edwards is still disappointed lawmakers failed to raise the needed revenue or make the necessary cuts to get the job done in the recently completed special session…

Amato was named the Louisiana Restaurant Association’s Restaurateur of the Year in 2003. Association president Stan Harris says Mother’s is one of the most iconic restaurants in Louisiana…:

Guard spokesperson Colonel Pete Schneider says this is the biggest response to a flooding event the Guard has ever seen in Louisiana. He says their equipment has been a vital resource.

Schneider says over one thousand Guardsmen have been activated so far, and the only times the Guard has seen a bigger response is during hurricanes. He says the Guard has been busy on a variety of missions throughout the state.

The LANG has issued more than 70-thousand bottles of water, 700 cots and blankets, and over one million sandbags. Guardsmen have utilized 160 high water vehicles, over 40 boats and 3 helicopters over the course of these operations. The Sabine River could experience major flooding in Calcasieu parish in the next 24 hours. Calcasieu Parish Emergency Preparedness director Dick Gremillion says an area about 30 miles long on the Sabine River, which is home to roughly 24-hundred residents, will likely be impacted. Gremillion says many of those residents have not evacuated yet, and the National Guard is trying to get people to leave.

So far 12 to 15 people have been rescued. Gremillion says the river is expected to crest tomorrow at 36 feet, which is well past its historic high.

Governor John Bel Edwards outlined some of his priorities to lawmakers of both the House and Senate as the 2016 regular legislative session got underway today. He says he’d like to see a moderate increase to the state’s current minimum wage of $7.25, because that amount is not a living wage in 2016…:

Edwards also wants equal pay for women, 17 year olds included in juvenile justice system and restoration of the Transportation Trust Fund. He also said he wants to establish passenger rail along I-10 and I-20.

At the start of the speech, Edwards spoke of the devastating and ongoing historic flooding throughout every corner of the state. The president has declared disaster areas in 7 parishes in north Louisiana, and Edwards says they are working to add more parishes.

Today is the first day of the 2016 regular legislative session, and after convening today, Governor John Bel Edwards spoke to lawmakers in a joint session. The state is facing an $800 million dollar deficit for next fiscal year, and Edwards says lawmakers are required to deliver a balanced budget…:

He says for that reason, he can’t give final numbers about what cuts were made and what revenue was raised in the special session. Tax measures can not be taken up in the regular session.
