Louisiana Oil and Gas Association President Don Briggs is not surprised President Barack Obama said no to a proposal to build the Keystone Pipeline. Obama’s decision ended a seven-year debate over the project that energy advocates said would create thousands of jobs and lower gas prices. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is urging Louisiana residents to be prepared for possible severe weather this weekend. The National Weather Service indicates much of the state is under a marginal risk of severe weather as a cold front enters the region. Forecasters are concerned about flooding as this will be at least the third episode of massive rain fall over the last month.

State Police say a Lafayette man died in a two vehicle fatality crash on I-10 in Iberville Parish after slamming into an 18-wheeler that was stalled in a crash. They say 50-year-old Alton Ortega died from his injuries. Invesitgators remind motorists that distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes in our state.

If you’re looking for some fun his weekend, you may want to head to the Vermilion Parish town of Abbeville for its annual Giant Omelette Celebration. Eric Gill reports…:

The March of Dimes finds Louisiana receives an F on the latest report card in the number of premature births. The numbers say the state’s pre-term birth rate was 12.3 percent in in 2014 — much higher than the March of Dimes 2020 goal of 8.1 percent. The premature births were worse in Baton Rouge at 13 percent and Shreveport at 18.8 percent.

This weekend the Vermilion Parish town of Abbeville will hold its annual Giant Omelette Celebration. The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office says a traffic stop has led to the arrest of a Bayou Vista man and a Houma woman on drug charges. Authorities say 27-year-old Brian Derouen and 28-year-old Theresa Trahan threw a gun, a bag of marijuana, and more than $7,500 worth of methamphetamine from their vehicle while trying to evade the stop. Drug paraphernalia was also found inside their vehicle. Derouen and Trahan are charged on several counts, including possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine.

It looks like another wet weekend for Louisiana as a slow-moving cold front is going to bring a lot of rain across the entire state over the next few days. Mike Marcotte, forecaster with The National Weather Service in Lake Charles, says we’re in one of the strongest El Nino patterns in history and that’s the main reason for the heavy rainfall we’ve seen over the past three weekends…

The state office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control announces the suspension of alcohol and tobacco permits of four more Bourbon Street clubs. Authorities say acts of prostitution and/or drug activity were found at Babe’s Cabaret, Big Daddy’s, Bourbon Cowboy, and The Swamp. ATC’s “Operation Trick or Treat” has resulted in a total of nine French Quarter establishments having their permits suspended.

State Police say no gun found in the vehicle involved in the death of a 6-year-old who was fatally shot as city marshals in Marksville opened fire on the SUV he was riding in. It’s reported that the father of the child victim, 25-year-old Chris Few, had warrants out for his arrest which is why the Ward 2 City Marshal deputies gave chase when Few didn’t pull over. State Police Col Mike Edmonson says the incident was caught on tape…

State Police say a Mississippi man is under arrest for his involvement in a fatal crash Tuesday night on I-10 near the Louisiana-Mississippi line. Authorities have determined that 25-year-old Daniel Coy attempted to pass an 18-wheeler on the shoulder of the road which caused the crash that killed Steven Clark. Coy awaits extradition from Mississippi on charges of negligent homicide, reckless operation, and hit-and-run.
