Political pundits say Governor Bobby Jindal failed to make himself stand out in last night’s Republican presidential candidate debate on CNN. Jindal was among four candidates who appeared in a debate of lower tier GOP presidential hopefuls. ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says Jindal’s performance shows why he remains at the bottom of the pack…:

The discussion about whether or not to build a passenger train line between Baton Rouge and New Orleans has been going on for years, but leaders in southeast Louisiana want to make it happen with the next governor. Kristen Palmer, chairwoman of the Louisiana Super Region Rail Authority, says passenger rail service in this region can give residents better access to jobs…:

The Southern Rail Commission plans to present funding options to the gubernatorial candidates later this fall.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating an officer involved shooting which sent the suspect to the hospital. They say a 911 call came in about a woman who was possibly being held against her will in Baker, and when deputies responded they encountered an armed man. That’s when law enforcement fired upon the suspect and he was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries according to authorities. The names of those involved have not been released.

In the SWAC, Grambling is at Alabama State and Southern hosts Jackson State.

The Saints offense could get a lift this weekend if running back CJ Spiller returns. Spiller has been sidelined by a knee injury, but practiced yesterday for the first time since undergoing surgery. Spiller hasn’t had much time to work with Drew Brees. But the veteran Q-B is optimistic the two can click right away….

Facebook users are buzzing about the possibility of a “Dislike” button being added to posts on the social media site. Co-founder Mark Zuckerberg says they are working on it, and LSU Mass Communications Professor Jensen Moore says the change of heart shows social media companies are becoming more receptive to their audience…:

Authorities say an officer involved shooting in Alexandria has left one man dead. They say 27-year-old Bobby Anderson of Alexandria was shot and killed by a US Marshals Violent Offender Task Force member while they were attempting to serve arrest warrants. It’s reported that Anderson was armed and threatening officers which resulted in a Task Force member firing his weapon. Anderson was wanted for two counts of attempted second degree murder and several other felony charges.

Chairwoman of the Louisiana Super Region Rail Authority, Kristen Palmer, says the rail service would operate on existing freight lines and the average trip between the Capital City and the Big Easy would be about 90 minutes…

Jindal said he’s glad the child was released and then turned the discussion to Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk of court, who was thrown in jail for her refusal to issue same-sex marriage licenses…

Saints running back CJ Spiller returned to practice yesterday for the first time since undergoing knee surgery. Spiller did not participate fully, but it’s still a sign he maybe able to play this Sunday against Tampa Bay.

Reserve guard Norris Cole is reportedly staying with the Pelicans. The 26-year-old has accepted the Pels qualifying offer of three-million dollars. Cole was traded to New Orleans from Miami during the middle of the season and the Birds went 18-and-11 after Cole arrived in the Crescent City.

And Grambling State is mourning the death of Doris Robinson. The widow of legendary Grambling football coach Eddie Robinson Senior. Mrs. Robinson passed away yesterday. She was 96.

A federal judge in Baton Rouge denied Governor Bobby Jindal’s request to block federal officials from penalizing the state if Louisiana decides to stop using the Common Core education standards. Judge Shelly Dick rejected the governor’s motion for a preliminary injunction, because Jindal’s lawyers didn’t show any evidence that such a threat will occur.

Parish leaders along I-10 between New Orleans and Baton Rouge gathered today to urge the next Louisiana governor to support a proposed railway commuter line that would connect the state’s two largest cities.
