The latest US Census data shows 20% of people who lived in Louisiana last year were in poverty, the same level it was the year before. In 2014, Louisiana is number three in the nation in the rate of poverty, only behind New Mexico and Mississippi. The report puts the poverty line at about $24,000 for a family of four. It shows the rate of children living in poverty is at nearly 28%.

Former state Senator Derrick Shepherd, who spent time in jail on a money laundering charge, has been disqualified from the October 24th election. An airman who saved a little girl from a rooftop during Hurricane Katrina has reunited with her after searching for 10 years. Former Air Force Master Sergeant Mike Maroney took a picture with the child following the rescue and it went viral, appearing in ad campaigns and Air Force brochures. He finally found his Katrina girl, LeShay Brown who is now 13, and they were reunited during a taping of The Real TV show.

According to a recent analysis by Moody’s Investors Service, the oil and gas industry will continue to face cuts in 2016. They project companies like Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron could see cash flow shrink by as much 20-percent this year. State Police released August casino figures Thursday and found that Louisiana’s 15 boats, racetrack slots and Harrah’s land-based casino brought in 1.7 percent less revenue than the prior year. Reports show winnings in New Orleans dropped 8.5 percent while winning in Lake Charles is up 21.5 percent due to the addition of the Golden nugget. Shreveport-Bossier City was down 15.7 percent in August.

Democratic presidential hopeful Hilary Clinton will make a campaign stop in Baton Rouge next week. Clinton will hold what is described as a “grassroots organizing event” Monday morning at the Louisiana Leadership Institute. Supporters can sign up to attend the event online at Clinton’s campaign website. There will also be a private campaign fundraiser while she’s in town.

During yesterday’s Lt. Governor’s debate in Baton Rouge, the four candidates were asked about their stance on the removal of Confederate monuments in New Orleans. Republican Jefferson Parish President John Young is against removing or destroying the monuments. He doesn’t think removing Confederate monuments will solve current racial issues…

The Pineville Police Department says a home invasion at an apartment complex has left one man dead. Authorities say they were informed by another resident of the complex that several black males forced their way into an apartment and began ransacking it. Police say one resident, 26-year-old Montreal Jones, was shot and later died at a local hospital. No arrests have been made in the incident and the investigation is continuing.

Low oil prices will most likely continue and result in more cuts to oil companies in 2016, according to a Moody’s Investors Service analysis. LSU Economist Dr. Loren Scott says currently crude oil is selling for about 47 dollars a barrel and they expect it to only slightly go up.
