In a recent survey by pollster Verne Kennedy, Republican Scott Angelle has moved ahead of fellow GOP candidate David Vitter in the race for governor. The numbers show Angelle with 25 percent and Vitter with 22 percent. But ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says he is skeptical about the results of this poll. Deputies with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office say a man has been arrested and charged with murder after his estranged wife was found dead Sunday night. They say 38-year-old David Johnson is charged with first degree murder, violations of protective orders and aggravated burglary with a weapon. Court documents show the victim had a restraining order against Johnson.

The largest public company headquartered in Louisiana, CenturyLink, says its estimating the elimination of 1000 jobs company-wide. Spokeswoman Annmarie Sarter says it’s unclear how the layoffs will impact the company’s corporate headquarters in Monroe…:

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have declared a section of land under the east side of the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles, a crime scene. Investigators began working the scene today as part of an ongoing investigation. An earth mover and dump truck are on the scene, but few other details are available at this time.

Baton Rouge food blogger and radio host Jay Ducote will be competing in the finale of Food Network Star on August 16 to win his own show on the network. Three finalists made their own pilot for a cooking show in last night’s episode where Ducote prepared fried catfish topped with crawfish etoufee as his showcase dish. The Monroe Police Department continues the investigation today into the death of a ULM student whose body was discovered inside her apartment over the weekend. Cops are not identifying the woman at this time except to say she is an Asian ULM international student. Investigators say there was no sign of forcecd entry into the apartment, but the death is being treating as a homicide until it has been determined otherwise.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say this brutally hot weather could reach its highest point today then mild relief will settle in by Tuesday. Excessive heat warnings are posted throughout the state until this at least this evening according to NWS forecaster Andrew Ansorge…:

Director of Imaging at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Owen Carmichael, says this research shows that not getting adequate, undisturbed sleep can mean a protein linked to Alzheimer’s isn’t cleaned out properly…:

Baton Rouge Police say the father of a 3 month old infant, who died over the weekend from injuries related to blunt force trauma, could face charges in her death. They say 28-year-old John Hope brought the baby to the hospital last week with life threatening injuries and told a story doctors didn’t feel added up. Hope was charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile at the time and additional charges are expected.

Funeral services for the Shreveport Police officer killed in the line of duty last week will be held today in Ascension Parish. Officer Thomas Lavalley, a native of St. Amant, was gunned down while responding to a disturbance call. 27-year-old Grover Cannon is charged with first degree murder in Lavalley’s death. Services are scheduled for 11AM at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant.

School’s back in session and authorities are urging drivers to be more cautious on the roads. American Automobile Association spokesperson Don Redman suggests that parents talk to their teen drivers about being vigilant and watch out for children walking and riding bicycles…

Jennings Police say a teenager is dead and two others are in custody after a weekend shooting at a party. Authorities say, when they arrived at the scene, they found 17-year-old Jawon Lennett suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Lennett was transported to a local hospital where he later died. 17-year-old Kyvonte Eaglin of Welsh was arrested and booked with second degree murder, while 19-year-old Jermaine Washington, Jr., also of Welsh, is charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning until 7PM tonight for a majority of Louisiana. Afternoon high temperatures are expected to hit in the triple digits statewide today, with heat index values in the warning area approaching 120 degrees. The remainder of the state is under a Heat Advisory. It is suggested that you drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks if you have to be outside for any extended period of time.
