West Monroe Representative Frank Hoffman says the proposal would likely require clinics to make patients aware of the reversal pill. Republican Representatives Charles Boustany and John Fleming are nearly neck and neck when it comes to raising funds for a potential campaing over US Senator David Vitter’s seat should Vitter become Governor. Boustany’s campaign says they’ve raised about $708,000 between April 1 and June 30th and Fleming raised nearly $743,000 during the same time period.

He says with crude oil prices currently in the mid-$50 a barrel range, the addition of Iran’s oil to the marketplace will continue to suppress prices, perhaps for the next two years. Briggs says says the oil industry here is going through a major downturn and this is a cruel reminder that American oil producers are still not allowed to sell their crude oil supplies overseas…

Louisiana Tech announces a record for donations made to  LTAC, which is the organization that helps fund the school’s athletic programs. The school says  during the 2014-2015 fiscal year, 1.1 million dollars was donated to LTAC and the athletic department received another 1.5 million dollars in unrestricted donations. Senior Associate Athletic Director Marco Borne says success on the field and court helped reel in a record number of donations.

Tech football won a bowl game in December and the men’s basketball team just won its third straight regular season conference championship. Borne says the money supports the student athletes and keeps them competitive with their opponents at other schools.

Previous donations have helped Tech build a 22 million dollar athletic complex, that will open in August. Borne says their newest goal is to break more records and raise even more funds. He says he expects more contributions in the next year as the program continues to grow.

The Steve Gleason Act is heading to President Obama’s desk for his signature. The legislation is named after former Saints player Steve Gleason, who has A-L-S. The measure will make speech generating devices more accessible to people who battle this disease that impacts the brain’s ability to control muscle movement. US Representative Steve Scalise of Metairie says this adds to Gleason’s legacy as a leader in the fight against A-L-S

Gleason pushed this legislation after he learned that Medicare funding for these type of devices was significantly scaled back.  Scalise says through Gleason’s lobbying efforts, the thousands who suffer from A-L-S will have their voices heard…

An internal investigation finds that Department of Children and Family Services staff members did not violate criminal laws in the case of a 15-year-old Baton Rouge boy found in poor living conditions and weighing only 47 pounds. Family members and lawmakers criticized the state agency for not doing enough to help the special needs child.  DCFS Secretary Suzy Sonnier would not talk about the specifics of this case, but says communication is important in these type of situations

One of the recommendations calls for legislation that creates a felony offense when a third party misrepresents facts to a DCFS employee during a child protection investigation. Sonnier says they support this recommendation and others…

Governor Bobby Jindal is now asking the Inspector General to get involved in an investigation into allegations that Planned Parenthood is selling body parts from aborted fetuses. Jindal has made a request to I-G Stephen Street’s office to investigate whether Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, which is currently building an abortion clinic in New Orleans, is involved in the illegal harvesting and trafficking of human body parts.

LSU Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette says defensive tackle Travonte Valentine is no longer on the football team. Valentine didn’t play at LSU last season, because of eligibility issues.

Louisiana Tech has been picked to repeat as West Division champs in a preseason vote conducted by a panel of media members that cover Conference USA schools. After winning the West last year, Tech brings back running back Kenneth Dixon, safety Xavier Woods, cornerback Adarius Barnes and safety Kentrell Brice, while also adding former Florida quarterback Jeff Driskell. Rice is picked to finish in second place in the West, and UTEP in third place. Western Kentucky is favorite in the East.

The Biletnikoff Award Watch list came out today. LSU’s Travin Dural from Breaux Bridge is on that list. So is Louisiana Tech receiver Trent Taylor, who had nine touchdowns last season. ULM wide receivers Rashon Ceaser and Ajalen Holley are both on the list.

And it’s been announced that the SEC Storied Documentary on former LSU football coach Bo Rein will air on the SEC Network on September 15th. Rein was hired in December 1979, but never coached a game, as he died in a plane crash a few weeks later.

But Louisiana should not see this effect…

The New Orleans Police Department says a man with a gun who was allegedly trying to rob a customer at a gas station had the tables turned onto him and was shot by the customer. Cops say early this morning the gunman wanted to rob the business and a customer but was stopped when he took a bullet by the customer. The robbery suspect was taken to a hospital and authorities say he will be booked upon release.

Employees and leaders at Zatarain’s in Gretna were on hand celebrating this week’s end of construction of the new company facility which is nearly triple in size. By the end of next year, the 80,000 square foot expansion will be online with new manufacturing lines packaging all of their Zatarain’s Cajun Creole products.

Gas prices are starting to go down once again. The American Automobile Association says the current statewide average for a gallon of regular is $2.53, down a nickel from this time last month. AAA fuel analyst Don Redman says this is not a nationwide trend and the West Coast is currently seeing prices go up by about 20 cents a gallon due to refinery and market issues. He says we’re not affected by this increase

Prices in the state are already about 90 cents lower than they were a year ago.
