Shreveport Police say a man is facing charges after allegedly bringing a concealed handgun into a military recruiting station Tuesday afternoon. They say while employees were talking with 48-year-old David Quinn, they learned Quinn was hiding a gun inside a basketball. Quinn is charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Bars will still have to remain closed on Sunday in Hammond after the city council voted 3-2 to keep the law active. Todd Delaune who owns Red, White and Brew on Hammond’s main street says this take’s a small segment of people who run businesses and tells them they can’t earn money 7 days a week like everyone else. He says, to him, the religious argument on this issue doesn’t hold up…:

A Jefferson Parish woman is under arrest on charges related to the alleged shooting of three of her children with BB guns as punishment. JPSO Col John Fortunato 34-year-old Tomeka Stair’s girlfriend, 21 year old Shebria Turner, was also arrested and confirmed the abuse…:

According to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, oil and gas jobs in Louisiana continued their decline in June, dropping to the lowest level in almost 10 years. Eric Smith, Associate Director of the Tulane Energy Insitute, says these jobs are some of the best jobs in the state:

Mining and logging jobs, where many oil and gas jobs are classified, fell by another 300 jobs last month, bringing the total number of jobs lost this year to 6,000.

Meanwhile Governor Bobby Jindal announces a $265 million dollar ammonia plant is coming to Grant Parish. They say the project in Pollock will create 85 new direct jobs with an avergae annual salary of $55,000.
Construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2016 and scheduled to be complete in 26 months.

A survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that more teenage girls are using the morning after pill. Dr. Valerie Williams, Assistant professor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at LSU Health, says more teens are taking the pill now because it’s easier to get over the counter…:

The report indicates more than 1 in 5 sexually active teen girls have used the morning after pill from 2001 to 2013 when it was 1 in 12 a decade earlier.

A woman and her girlfriend are facing charges in Jefferson Parish accused of shooting their children with BB guns when they wouldn’t listen. Police charged 34-year-old Tomeka Stair and 21-year-old Shebria Turner with three counts of cruelty to a juvenile.

It’s been a long season for the Philadelphia Phillies, who have the worst record in the Major Leagues, but Baton Rouge product and former LSU All-American Aaron Nola gave the city of Brotherly Love something to cheer about last night. Nola threw six strong innings, allowing just one run and striking out six in his major league debut for the Phillies. But Philadelphia still lost one to nothing to Tampa Bay as the only run Nola gave up was to the opposing pitcher, who hit a home run. Nola will make his next start on Sunday in Chicago against the Cubs.

In the NBA….the Pelicans have reportedly reached a one-year deal with 12-year veteran center Kendrick Perkins. The 30-year-old helped the Boston Celtics win an NBA Championship in 2008.

And Seth Curry has signed a two-year deal with the Sacramento Kings. Curry averaged nearly 25 points a game for the New Orleans Pelicans summer league team.

Defending Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana has eight players on the league’s preseason All-conference football teams. The Lions placed two players on the first team, defensive backs Harlan Miller and Denzel Thompson. Northwestern State has six players on the preseason teams, including wide receiver Ed Eagan. McNeese State has four players, three on the first team, linebackers Wallace Scott and Bo Brown and defensive back Brent Spikes and Nicholls State has one player, running back Michael Henry.

Ragin Cajuns Coach Mark Hudspeth has announced the dismassal of two football players…defensive lineman Marquis White and receiver C-J Bates. Hudspeth says they felt it was in the best interest of the program to part ways. White had 16 tackles last season, while Bates caught 12 passes.

Louisiana College has been picked to finish third in the American Southwest Conference. Wildcats quarterback Eason Melancon has been named an A-S-C preseason player of the year.

The city council in Hammond refuses to allow establishments that only severe alcohol to open on Sundays. During a meeting last night, the vote was 3-2 against changing the longtime law. Apparently 48-year-old David Quinn said he was upset over the shooting at a Tennessee military facility and brought the gun in an attempt to be helpful and arm personnel working at the center for protection. Quinn faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon.

Thibodaux was named one of the 12 cutest small towns in America by the lifestyle publication PureWow. Kathy Benoit, President of the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce, says the Lafourche Parish town is very historic with plenty of spots on the National Register…:

Thibodaux Police say a Tuesday night triple shooting has left one dead and two others injured. Authorities say the three victims were transported to a local hospital where one succumbed to his injuries. The two other victims are being treated for their wounds. The name of the deceased is being withheld upon notification of next of kin. The investigation is in its early stages.

The suspect car is described as a white Chevrolet Impala that should have damage to the front end or right front bumper.

Former LSU All-American Aaron Nola gave up five hits and one run in six innings in his major league debut, but it wasn’t enough as the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0. Rays pitcher Nathan Karns not only gets the win by giving up 3 hits in five innings, he scored the game’s only run with a solo homer in the third inning. Karns’ dinger was the first home run by an American League pitcher since 2011.

UL-Lafayette head football coach Mark Hudspeth announces that defensive lineman Marquis White and receiver CJ Bates have been dismissed from the program for violating team rules. White recorded 16 tackles for the Ragin Cajuns last season and Bates caught 12 passes, one for a touchdown. Hudspeth says they wish them well and he will have no further comment on the matter.

Conference USA Media Day is today in south Florida. Louisiana Tech head football coach Skip Holtz will address the media, along with safety Kentrell Brice and quarterback Jeff Driskel this morning.

The Ragin Cajuns and head baseball coach Tony Robichaux have agreed on a multi-year contract extension. The terms of the deal, which must be approved by the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors, have not been disclosed. Robicheaux lead the Cajuns to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship last season and the team advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals.

League sources say veteran center Kendrick Perkins will join the New Orleans Pelicans. It’s reported that the team will sign Perkins to a one year contract for the veterans minimum. The Pels see the 30-year-old serving as a mentor for star forward Anthony Davis. Perkins joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in February, but was only used sparingly.

Sources also say Seth Curry and the Sacramento Kings have agreed a two-year, $2 million contract. Curry, brother of NBA MVP Stephen Curry, was the top scorer in the NBA’s summer league pumping in 25 points per game for the New Orleans Pelicans.

In college basketball…the Lady Techsters have released their schedule for the upcoming season. Coach Tyler Summit’s team opens the season on November 14th at Wisconsin.
