The state House rejects the Senate’s changes to the cigarette tax bill on a 81-15 vote sending the legislation to conference committee where both sides can hash it out. The Senate wanted the cigarette tax to be up with the Southern Regional Average of $1.08 but the House wanted to keep the increase at 32 cents lifting Louisiana’s tax to 68 cents per pack. It was unlikely the House would go along with the higher increase.

Sterlington Police say a man is in the Ouachita Correctional Center after allegeldy severely burning his pregnant girlfriend during a fight over bills, causing second and third degree burns and resulting in the loss of her pregnancy. 23-year-old Darren Lambert is charged with aggravated domestic abuse involving burning. The man is accused of pouring rubbing alcohol on the victim then lighting her on fire with a cigarette.

The state’s Attorney General’s Office has filed a notice of appeal with the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

As expected, the State House has decided not to agree to the Senate amendment on the cigarette tax bill which would raise it to $1.08 a pack — matching the Southern Regional average. Lawmakers in the lower chamber are more comfortable with raising the tax 32 cents to 68 cents a pack. The bill now heads to a conference committee.

A measure which would reduce pot sentences in Louisiana is headed to Governor Jindal’s desk. The measure would drastically reduce penalties for those busted with 14 grams of pot or less. Metairie Representative JOe Lopinto says we have some of the harshest marijuana penalties in the country and this is a smart bill that cleans up the books…:

The state is in the process of appealing the ruling.

Sterlington Police say a man is under arrest accused of setting his pregnant girlfriend on fire. Authorities say 23-year-old Darren Lambert and his girlfriend were having an argument over paying bills. At some point it is alleged that Lambert threw rubbing alcohol on her and lit it on fire. Court reports show doctors told the victim, who was 9 weeks pregnant, she lost the baby due to the stress of the abuse. Lambert is currently facing aggravated domestic abuse charges.

A higher education tax credit that provides an offset to revenue generating bills, receives a cold shoulder from House members. Critics say the SAVE Act is complicated and is only offered so Governor Jindal doesn’t break his no-new-taxes pledge. New Orleans Representative Jeff Arnold says there are other bills that could provide the offset needed for Jindal to keep his pledge…

Abortions in Louisiana have jumped in number since 2010, while nearly everywhere else they’ve gone down, according to a new report.
