The governor’s office says Bobby Jindal plans to sign the three bills that have been described as a compromise in the battle over Common Core. Council for a Better Louisiana President Barry Erwin says the bottom line is that the education standards will stay in public school classrooms…:

Four panels that will mostly be made up of teachers will review Common Core and make recommendations to BESE. The next governor will have the ability to reject any proposed changes.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s office says a teenager from Opelousas tragically lost her life after a tree fell on top of her car. Spokesman Lt. Clay Higgins says the incident happened around 2pm Tuesday and they presume there were strong storms in the area when 17-year-old Gaberielle Lajack was backing out of her own driveway…:

Higgins says the coroner pronounced Lajack dead at the scene.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office says a 17-year-old girl is dead after a tree fell on her car near Plaisance. They say Gabrielle Lajack was sitting in a parked car in her driveway when the incident occurred. Lajack was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner.

New Orleans Police say a man is dead after his truck crashed through a parking garage cable barrier, crashed through a calss window and fell to the street. Paul Colce, an eyewitness, says he was standing at Camp and Poydras streets when he heard the sound of glass breaking…:

The Sterlington Police Department arrests a man for allegedly setting his pregnant girlfriend on fire, causing severe burns and resulting in the woman losing the baby due to the stress. Chief Barry Bonner says 23-year-old Darren Lambert is charged with aggravated domestic abuse involving burning which is a new statute that DA Jerry Jones helped establish along with Monroe Senator Bob Kostelka..:

A federal appeals court has granted the state Attorney General’s motion to temporarily block the release of Albert Woodfox. The “Angola 3” inmate has spent over 40 years in solitary confinement for the murder of Angola prison guard Brent Miller. His two convictions for that crime were overturned. The appeals court order came one day after a federal judge ordered the unconditional release of Woodfox. Tuesday’s ruling blocks Woodfox’s release until at least Friday.

SLU and LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center have partnered up to launch a program that teaches college students how to work with overweight kids. Michelle Southern reports…

LSU will leave tomorrow for Omaha as they’ll make their 17th trip to the College World Series. There are a handful of guys who were on the team that went to the C-W-S in 2013. But a vast majority of the players will make their first trip. Coach Paul Mainieri has let them know what they can expect…

LSU will play TCU on Sunday at 2 PM. The game will be televised on ESPN.

The LSU Tigers have received a verbal commitment from Denham Springs defensive lineman Caleb Roddy. He’s six-foot-five, 241 pounds and is the 12th commitment for the class of 2016. The other defensive linemen in the class are St. Thomas Aquinas’ Edwin Alexander and Destrehan’s Glen Logan.

The second day of the Major League Baseball Draft saw seven state college players selected. UL-Lafayette shortstop Blake Trahan was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the third round. The Kinder native was named Sun Belt Player of the Year this season.

The Nationals also picked up Nicholls State pitcher, Grant Borne. The junior left-hander from Baton Rouge was selected in the seventh round.

And rounds three through ten saw 5 LSU Tigers selected. Senior catcher Kade Scivicque was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round. Infielder Jared Foster went to the Los Angeles Angels in the fifth round. The ninth round saw three Tigers chosen. Left-handed pitcher Zac Person was selected by the Houston Astros, the Philadelphia Phillies drafted outfielder Mark Laird, and third baseman Conner Hale was picked up by the Seattle Mariners.

A couple of Louisiana high school standouts got their name called yesterday, as well. Franklinton center fielder Josh Magee was taken by the San Diego Padres in the fifth round and Oak Forest Academy’s Kolton Kendrick got tabbed by the Minnesota Twins in round eight.

The state House has sent legislation that would raise the tax on cigarettes to a conference committee to work out the differences between the two chambers. The House passed the measure raising the tax to 68 cents per pack. The Senate amended the bill to raise the tax to $1.08. Alexandria Representative Lance Harris says the Senate hike is just too much…

Bogalusa Representative Harold Ritchie is in favor of the Senate amendment saying it will help both higher ed And health care in the state’s budget crisis.

A three bill compromise over common Core has won final passage in the House, and are their way to the governor’s desk. By a 99-0 vote, the motion will have on-going public and legislative reviews of the education standards. One of the approved bills will place limits on Louisiana usuage of the material.

LSU center fielder Andrew Stevenson was selected in the second round by the Washington Nationals. Catcher Kade Scivicque was taken in the fourth round by the Detroit Tigers, former Barbe standout Jared Foster was picked in the fifth round by the Angels, the Astros picked relief pitcher Zac Person in the ninth round. Also in the ninth round, the Phillies drafted LSU outfielder Mark Laird.

UL Lafayette shortstop Blake Trahan was picked in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds. Trahan is the 16th player under Head Coach Tony Robichaux to be drafted in the top 10 rounds.
