LSU AgCenter Entomologist Kristin Healy says any time you get more water, you get more mosquitoes. Healy says when a river floods, it floods nearby flood plains and that’s where the problem lies…

She says mosquito control departments in areas along the Red River will have their hands full as they combat the pests. Healy says the mosquitoes the area will see from the floods will likely not be the “house mosquito” that transmits the West Nile Virus…

Although they may not be the type that transmit West Nile, Healy says the mosquitoes produced by the flood waters will the type that like to bite humans. She says, whether or not it’s a bad or mild mosquito year, personal protection is always important…

The Abbeville Police Department says 8 people are under arrest who were allegedly involved in a cockfighting ring. Detective LeLand Laseter says they got a call mid-May from a concerned citizen who reported they’d seen roosters fighting at a residence in the city. He says cops responded and observed from a distance…:

Laseter says when officers entered the property, they located feathers, wounded roosters and other things associated with cockfighting…:

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s office says 4 people described as gangsters have been arrested in the brutal murder of a 15-year-old boy last year. Sheriff Jeff Wiley says 18-year-old Tyrell Williams, 21-year-old Marcus Ester and two juveniles are charged with 1st degree murder in the death of Brandon Augusta. He believes all 5 were under the influence of synthetic marijuana when a fight took place…:

Augusta went missing in Donaldsonville August 2014 and was found 5 days later along the levee — his body so badly beaten they needed dental records to identify the high school freshman. Wiley says several weapons of opportunity were used in the killing on the bank of the Mississippi River…:

Senate Finance Chairman Jack Donahue says legislators also need to pass a tax offset to prevent Governor Bobby Jindal from vetoing certain tax bills

The SAVE tax credit could be used to offset tax increases and satisfy Jindal’s demand for a revenue neutral budget. But House members call the legislation a sham. Donahue hopes the House changes its stance

A key component of the legislation is that the next governor will have the ability to reject any proposed changes to Common Core.

Another bill heading to the governor’s desk is one that doubles the fine for littering. A first-offense for simple littering will go up from 75 to 150-dollars and subsequent offenses will increase from 500 to one-thousand dollars. The additional revenue will go towards the retirement system of the law enforcement agency that writes the litter ticket.

Coach Paul Mainieri doesn’t expect many home runs in Omaha, even though home runs were up in the regular season, because of a lower seamed baseball that college baseball is using this year.

In major league baseball draft today, LSU first baseman Chris Chinea was selected in the 17th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Padres selected ULM and West Ouachita product Kodie Tidwell in the 26th round. San Diego also picked former Louisiana Tech pitcher Phil Maton in the 20th round.

Saints Coach Sean Payton has confirmed that pass rusher Junior Galette has a pectoral injury. Payton says they are still waiting on a final opinion on whether Galette should undergo surgery. If he does undergo the knife, he’ll miss much of the 2015 campaign. Galette has 22 sacks over the last two seasons.

The UL Lafayette basketball team has announced Frank Bartley the Fourth has transferred in from BYU. He’s six-foot-three and averaged three points and two rebounds a game at BYU. Bartley led Christian Life in Baton Rouge to a pair of Class One-A state titles and his father, Frank Bartley the Third, was an all-conference football player at USL. He’ll be eligible to play at the start of the 2016-17 season.

New Louisiana Tech head coach Eric Konkol has hired a new assistant coach to replace Matt McMahon who was named the head coach at Murray State. Corey Barker takes McMahon’s place on the staff. Barker was an assistant coach at Bowling Green State last season.

Some new Gross Domestic Product numbers from the Federal Bureau of Economic Analysis reveal Louisiana’s economy is lagging behind the national average for growth. The national rate is 2.2 percent; while Louisiana’s is 1.9 percent. The state’s mining sector – which includes oil and natural gas- shrank, which helped to contribute to the lower numbers.

A day after the session ends, Governor Bobby Jindal will reportedly be traveling to attend a prayer rally this weekend in South Carolina. The Charleston reports Jindal is going to participate in their version of “The Response” on Saturday — similar to the prayer rally held at LSU in January.

A horrible tragedy to report out of St. Landry Parish. A tree fell on top of a teenage girl as she was pulling out of her driving way — killing her. Lt. Clay Higgins says 17-year-old Gaberielle Lajack of Opelousas was a beautiful young lady, niece to one of their deputies and the incident has everyone in total shock…:

The National weather Service says the Red River at Shreveport is still a tad over 37 feet. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness have started assessing the damage in Northwest Louisiana. The information is needed in support of possible federal assistance.

A shocking incident happened in New Orleans this morning as a truck drove through a glass parking garage and fell to the street 5 or 6 floors below. Cops say the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The LSU football program has received a verbal commitment from Jakori Savage, who is an offensive lineman from Alabama. Savage also reportedly had scholarship offers from South Carolina and Kentucky.

Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson’s competency hearing resumed today in a civil district courtroom in New Orleans. Very few details have been released about how the proceedings are going, because the public and media have been kept out of the courtroom. At issue is whether Benson is capabe of operating the two professional sports franchises.

Champions square next to the Mercedes Benz Superdome has a new look. Officials say the venue is dressed in gold—a color that unites the Saints and Pelicans and also represents Louisiana’s championship moments. New photos have been put up featuring New Orleans’ finest sports mements. Which means the photo that had Darren Sharper in it, has been removed.
