Colorado Congressman Jared Polis went on a bizarre rant about “crayfish” directed at Minden Congressman John Fleming on the US House floor. Polis disagreed with Fleming’s stance on a bill that would prevent the federal government from enforcing federal marijuana laws in states that have legalized it. Here’s how Polis responded to Fleming’s remarks…

Fleming cited numerous studies that show that states that have legalized marijuana have a much higher use rate among youth aged 12-17. Polis disputes those claims and make his stance on “crayfish” clear…

Fleming says Polis can be pretty bizarre at times and this is a pretty good example of that.  He feels the Colorado congressman needs to get his facts straight before going on another rant…

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has damage assessment teams in northwest Louisiana to gather information on the amount of damage as a result of the Red River flooding. GOHSEP deputy director Mark Riley says the data collected is needed in a request for a federal disaster declaration

Riley says if the state secures a presidential disaster declaration, it will allow individuals or families impacted by the flood to apply for financial assistance

It’s been reported that 300 homes were affected by flooding in Shreveport. Riley says it’s too early to tell if the flooding is extensive enough to qualify for federal assistance

The state House rejected a resolution today that asked the Louisiana Attorney General to drop his appeal of a federal judge’s order to release Albert Woodfox; the last of the Angola three. Woodfox has been in solitary confinement for over 40 years for killing a prison guard, but his last two convictions were overturned. Baton Rouge Representative Patricia Smith says it’s time to drop this:

Smith says Angola warden Burl Cain has said Woodfox is not violent and to keep him in solitary confinement like this is ridiculous. Woodfox has long argued that he did not kill guard Brent Miller but Jackson Representative Ken Havard says if the man is set free then the victim’s family would suffer…:(The resolution failed 65-18.)

Woodfox has said he was targeted because he was trying to expose injustices at the prison and because he was an activist with the Black Panthers. Several House members came to the defense of Attorney General Caldwell and his desire to keep Woodfox in solitary confinement. Havard says this could have been taken care of long ago…:

The US House votes to repeal a law requiring country of origin labels on beef, pork, and poultry. Richland Parish Congressman Ralph Abraham says it’s projected that Louisiana could face $1.3 billion in new tariffs on exports if Congress doesn’t pass the legislation. Abraham says this issue goes farther than just beef, pork, and poultry…

The World Trade Organization has ruled that the required labels discriminate against Mexican and Canadian meat imports. Abraham says the regulatory burden put on both countries is leading to them to impose retaliatory tariffs on Louisiana and the US. He says lawmakers are left with few choices…

The measure now heads to the US Senate. Abraham says if a tariff war erupts, a lot more than beef, pork, and poultry would be involved and it would not turn out in our favor…

The state House didn’t want to ask the state to drop its appeal of a federal judge’s ruling to set free the last of the Angola 3. Albert Woodfox has been in solitary confinement more than four decades for killing a prison guard but his last two convictions were overturned. But Jackson Representative Ken Havard says if the man is set free then the victim’s family would suffer…:

Chris Chinea was the last player from LSU to go in the Major League Baseball Draft. St. Louis selected Chinea in the 17th round. Southeastern had three pitchers drafted, Jake Johnson to Cincinnati, Kyle Keller to Miami and Tate Scioneaux to Pittsburgh.

The Saints go into the upcoming season without tight end Jimmy Graham and wide receiver Kenny Stills. Both were traded earlier this year. But Coach Sean Payton says that doesn’t mean they’ll become a more run-oriented team….

Former North Caddo High guard Kadavion Evans has been added to the 2015-16 Ragin Cajuns men’s basketball roster. Evans is five-foot-eleven and averaged nearly 25 points a game last season and eh was named to the LHSAA Class Two-A Academic All-State team.

State lawmakers have until 6 today to reach an agreement on the budget. Leaders say they are very close to coming up with a spending plan for next year. One of the major items up for debate is what to do about the cigarette tax which the House wants to raise 32 cents but the Senate wants to make it much higher.

As part of the budget deal, lawmakers are still trying to figure out how much to riase the tax on cigarettes. The House agreed to a tax increase of 32 cents and the Senate believes it should be much higher than that.

The Livingston Police Department arrests a 28-year-old man for allegedly having sex with an underage girl in a public restroom. Authorities say witnesses reported Jason Kelly and a 15-year-old girl regularly visit the bathroom in the park across from the police department. Cops ended up finding the two and the suspect confessed to the crime. Kelly is charged with two counts of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Hammond Representative Chris Broadwater has told lawmakers that higher ed could be cut 282 million dollars, if Jindal vetoes revenue generating bills that are not offset with a tax cut.

Some are concerned the rising waters of the Red River could lead to a higher number of mosquitoes this summer. LSU AgCenter Entomologist Kristin Healy says the mosquitoes produced by the flood waters may not be the type that transmit West Nile, but they will the type that like to bite humans. She says personal protection is always important…

Healy says mosquito control departments in areas along the Red River will have their hands full this summer.

The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man and woman, who were running an animal rescue center in Anacoco, after authorities say they found numerous dead animals on the property. They say deputies also found several animals in poor health and none of the animals on the property had adequate food or water. 42-year-old Jason Scerbo and 33 year-old Amanda Scerbo were arrested on animal cruelty charges.

A former teacher in Rapides Parish has been arrested on allegations of inappropriate behavior with an underage student. 45-year-old Christopher Glasscock is booked on seven counts of prohibited sexual conduct between educator and student. Authorities say allegations against Glasscock, who was an agricultural teacher at Buckeye High School, surfaced in May. Details about the allegations were not released.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s office says 4 people described as gangsters have been arrested in the brutal murder of a 15-year-old boy last year. Sheriff Jeff Wiley says 18-year-old Tyrell Williams, 21-year-old Marcus Ester and two juveniles are charged in the death of Brandon Augusta. He believes all 5 were under the influence of synthetic marijuana when a fight took place…

The Abbeville Police Department says 8 people are under arrest who were allegedly involved in a cockfighting ring. Detective LeLand Laseter says a concerned citizen reported they’d seen roosters fighting at a residence in the city. He says when officers entered the property, they located feathers, wounded roosters and other things associated with cockfighting…

In Major League Baseball Draft yesterday, LSU first baseman Chris Chinea was selected in the 17th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Padres selected ULM and West Ouachita product Kodie Tidwell in the 26th round. San Diego also picked former Louisiana Tech pitcher Phil Maton in the 20th round.

Three Southeastern Louisiana pitchers were drafted in the final day of the Major League Baseball Draft. The Cincinnati Reds selected junior right-hander Jake Johnson in the 16th round. Johnson compiled a 10-2 record and a 3.42 ERA for the Lions last season.

Senior right-hander Kyle Keller was picked up by the Miami Marlins in round 18. The New Orleans native appeared in 15 games last season and turned in a 2.75 ERA.

And in the 39th round, the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted junior Tate Scioneaux. The right-hander from Reserve has racked up a total of 260 strikeouts for the Lions.

A couple of NIcholls State Colonels were in the draft yesterday. Left-handed relief pitcher Stuart Holmes got tabbed by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 35th round. Holmes was named Southland Conference Relief Pitcher of the Year. Right-hander Ryan Deemes was selected by the Houston Astros in the 36th round. Holmes lead the Southland Conference and set a school record with 15 saves last season.

McNeese State senior outfielder Andrew Guillotte was taken in the 32nd round by the Toronto Blue Jays.
