17:30 Legislative Update, April 20th, 2015

The Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee was packed Monday with people waiting to hear what would happen with a bill that would repeal Louisiana’s inventory tax. It’s a critical piece of legislation when it comes to balancing the state’s budget in the face of a one-point-six billion dollar deficit. But the bill’s author, Benton Senator Robert Adley, decided not to move forward, because there are questions over the exact fiscal impact of his measure…:
cut 30 (11) “….that’s involved”
The move by Adley resulted in the House Ways and Means committee re-adjusting it’s agenda for Tuesday as the panel removed all bills that are considered revenue generating and that includes a bill to raise the state’s cigarette tax and a measure that would put an end to the film tax credit program in 2019.

The state’s Democrats versus Republicans flag football game in Tiger Stadium Sunday raised over $20,000 for the families of the Louisiana National Guardsmen who were killed in the Black Hawk helicopter crash.

An effort to have an anti-Common Core bill bypass the House Education committee for a hearing by the full House was defeated Monday. Lake Charles Representative Brett Geymann made a motion to move House Bill 373 directly to the House floor, but members of the House Education Committee opposed the effort. Hammond Representative Charles Broaddwater…:

The Pelicans will look to even up their best of seven series with Golden State tonight. New Orleans dropped game one on Saturday as the Pels fell behind by 15 points in the first quarter and ended up losing 106-99 in front of a fired up crowd at Oracle Arena. Coach Monty Williams said today he believes the decibel level inside Golden State’s Arena may be illegal. Golden State has won 40 of its 42 home games this season.

Also, Pelican guards Tyreke Evans and Jrue Holiday are listed as questionable for tonight. Evans has a deep bone bruise in his left knee and Holiday is dealing with leg soreness. Both players are game-time decisions.

LSU is ranked number one in all six college baseball polls that were released today. The Tigers swept a doubleheader from Georgia on Saturday in a rain-shortened series. They host Tulane tomorrow night and then Texas A-and-M comes to Baton Rouge for a three-game series that begins Thursday.
