The state Fire Marshal’s Office says an early morning fire yesterday in Farmerville has claimed the life of a 29-year-old newlywed and her husband was arrested on drug charges. The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Valene Henderson. Deputy Chief Brant Thompson says the initial investigation determined that the fire originated in the master bedroom of the wood framed home…

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The victim’s husband, 30-year-old MacArthur Gray, was not at home at the time of the fire. Thompson says Gray returned home shortly after fire crews arrived and provided investigators information about the couple’s activity immediately before the fire…

He says the couple was using candles as a light source because their electricity had recently been shut off. Henderson’s body is being taken to Little Rock so an autopsy can be performed. Thompson says Gray was found to be in possession of suspected crack cocaine at the scene and was arrested…

Would we feel the same about this if the victim were female? Dave Brashear is a social worker in southeast Louisiana. He says our first response to this might be to think the teen got lucky and wasn’t traumatized…:

Apparently the incident was reported after the victim was bragging about it to other students. But Brashear says just because the teen was bragging, it doesn’t mean what happened is okay with him…:

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette reports their graduation rate has risen by more than 49-percent over the last decade. The current graduation rate stands at nearly 48-percent, compared to 32-percent in 2004. Vice President for Enrollment Management, Dr. DeWayne Bowie, feels a big part of the increase is that UL-L is now a selective admissions institution…

Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle has declared his intent to run for Governor next year. The Republican from Breaux Bridge made his announcement on The Moon Griffon Show earlier today. Angelle joins Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne, US Senator David Vitter, and state Representative John Bel Edwards who have previously stated that they’ll run for the state’s top office.

Louisiana State Police are looking for a tractor they believe caused a bad accident between two semis on a rural road in East Feliciana Parish last night. Trooper Jared Sandifer says two 18-wheelers were traveling in opposite direction on LA 67 near the Mississippi State line around 7:45pm…

Sandifer says the two big rigs ended up crashing into each other. One driver was uninjured while the other suffered moderate injuries.

Dr. Mignonne Morrell with the LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine says the more you increase the conversation about the disease, the more likely a woman is to encounter someone who caught it early, which is the goal of breast cancer screening…

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, an electrical short in an extension cord is the probable cause of a mobile home fire that claimed the lives of a husband and wife in Campti. Authorities say 68-year-old Florence Berguin and her husband 70-year-old John Berguin were pulled from their burned residence in Natchitoches Parish and pronounced dead. The victims were the mother and step-father of Campti Police Chief Greg Eldridge.

With the news out of Dallas of the first confirmed case of Ebola in the United States, state officials are taking action to ensure Louisiana is ready for any potential threat. Eric Gill reports…:

There is plenty of concern sweeping the nation regarding Ebola now that the first confirmed case has been reported out of Dallas, but Louisiana officials say we’re ready. State Health Officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry says first of all Ebola is not something you can catch like the common cold…:

He says there is a lot of infrastructure in place so that if someone in Louisiana happens to get Ebola, it can be contained to where it doesn’t spread.

State Police say they are looking for a farm tractor and the driver who they believe may have caused a crash in Clinton between two 18-wheelers yesterday evening. They say the two big rigs were traveling on LA 67 in East Feliciana Parish near the Mississippi Louisiana state line. Investigators believe a tractor with no lights was in the middle of the road and the mac trucks crashed when trying to avoid hitting it. One of the drivers is okay the other has moderate injuries. If you know anything about this tractor please call 911.

October is breast cancer awareness month so you’ll start seeing pink everywhere pretty soon. Breast Imaging specialists Dr. Mignonne Morrell with the LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine says during this month women become educated on when they should have a mammogram and a clinical breast exam…:

She says lot of people donate money to the cause this month which helps fund research on ways to better treat breast cancer.

The Baton Rouge Police Department says a man is under arrest on murder & obstruction charges for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death then trying to hide evidence. The say 40-year-old William Jackson told officers that he killed 32-year-old Lekeisha Duncan during a bad fight. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Jackson had to be treated for stab wounds and was arrested after he was released from the hospital yesterday.
