With the new school year in session, the state Department of Transportation has started their “Be a Roll Model” campaign for bicycle safety. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says from 2014 to 2015, the number of deaths involving cyclists tripled. He says cyclists should always follow traffic laws.

Wilson says helmets are required for children under age 12 and encouraged for all other riders.

The National Federation of Independent Business finds small business optimism is showing no significant signs of enthusiasm for expansion. NFIB State Director Dawn Starns says small business owners are struggling to find qualified workers and cite that’s their third single most important business problem. Authorities in Livingston Parish are responding to a log truck that was hit by a train shortly before 3 this afternoon. The wreck happened near Florida Blvd. Injuries have been reported and AirMed was sent to the scene.

Baton Rouge Police are looking for a suspect on the levee who fled from authorities. The man was in a vehicle pursuit with police near Nicholson on Highland road. He then jumped out of the tan Toyota he was driving on River Road near the Mississippi River bridge and fled on foot.
