The Louisiana Department of Health reports 47 women died from pregnancy-related causes in a six-year span starting in 2011, one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the nation. L-D-H Secretary Dr. Rebekah Gee says it’s a startling problem, specifically within one population.

The back of a Mandeville synagogue was covered swastikas and other Nazi symbols and messages that were discovered Wednesday morning. The phrase “Synagogue of Satan” and “burn” were clearly displayed on the Northshore Jewish Congregation’s walls, along with white supremacist code numbers.  The act occurred while schools were out in the area for Tropical Storm Gordon.  Mandeville Police Chief Gerald Sticker says they’re on the hunt for the perpetrators.

The act has received condemnation from religious and anti-racism organizations across the state, including the Anti-Defamation League and the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
