The US Supreme Court has barred Louisiana from executing a man convicted of the 1993 killing an off-duty Baton Rouge Police officer because his mental disability bars capital punishment. Kevan Brumfield was convicted in the shooting death of Cpl. Betty Smothers, the mother of former NFL star Warrick Dunn. Legal analyst Tim Meche on the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling…:

Meche points out that Brumfield has been going to court for 20 years and this ruling could drag matters out for another five to seven years.

On Wednesday the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal agrees that Governor Bobby Jindal can’t do away with testing contracts tied to the controversial Common Core Education Standards. Jindal suspended the contracts last year saying they weren’t properly procured but a district judge lifted the suspension and this week the appeals court upheld that ruling.
