Jim Garvey, an attorney from Metairie, has been named the new president of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Garvey was voted to succeed Chas Roemer, who did not run for re-election to the board last year. BESE members also selected Holly Boffy of Lafayette as vice-president and Kira Orange Jones of New Orleans as secretary-treasurer. The newly elected officers will serve one-year terms.
