The Humane Society of Louisiana urges owners of unwanted domestic rabbits to contact shelters for rehoming after more than 50 abandoned rabbits have been found in New Orleans and Jefferson Parish. Director Jeff Dorson says owners are abandoning rabbits in public parks, but they cannot survive in the wild for long.

Dorson says the state law has a specific statute that prohibits the abandonment of any living creature.
