The Union Parish Sheriff’s Office says a Farmerville town employee has admitted to stealing over $26,000 in cash payments made to the town. They say 31-year-old Crystal Meeking took the money from water utility payments, traffic citations, and bench warrant fines. Meeking says she used the money to pay bills and purchase personal items. Meeking is charged with felony theft of more than $25,000.

Local shrimpers continue to express their anger over a lack of federal regulations that is flooding the market with cheap imported shrimp and driving prices down in the US. Louisiana Shrimp Association President Clint Guidry says dockside shrimp revenue has fallen nearly two-thirds so far this year. He says the public can help by contacting their congressman about the problem and making sure they aren’t purchasing imported shrimp…

Guidry says, unless the federal government steps in, an industry that has thrived for generations will be destroyed.

The State Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announces the opening of a new 3 million dollar oyster hatchery in Grand Isle that will more than double production of the larvae used to seed oyster grounds. Statewide Oyster Program Manager Patrick Banks says they’re not sure how many will survive once released, but the facility is capable of producing one billion oyster larvae per year…

Banks says the money for the hatchery came as part of the BP oil spill settlement.
