The Department of Children and Family Services is spreading the word about Louisiana’s safe haven law. Emelie Gunn has more on what this means…

Funeral services for the Shreveport Police officer killed in the line of duty last week will be held today in Ascension Parish. Officer Thomas Lavalley, a native of St. Amant, was gunned down while responding to a disturbance call. 27-year-old Grover Cannon is charged with first degree murder in Lavalley’s death. Services are scheduled for 11AM at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant.

School’s back in session and authorities are urging drivers to be more cautious on the roads. American Automobile Association spokesperson Don Redman suggests that parents talk to their teen drivers about being vigilant and watch out for children walking and riding bicycles…

The use of any handheld device in a school zone is prohibited. Redman says fines are doubled when in a school zone and cops will be out there.

Jennings Police say a teenager is dead and two others are in custody after a weekend shooting at a party. Authorities say, when they arrived at the scene, they found 17-year-old Jawon Lennett suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Lennett was transported to a local hospital where he later died. 17-year-old Kyvonte Eaglin of Welsh was arrested and booked with second degree murder, while 19-year-old Jermaine Washington, Jr., also of Welsh, is charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.
