President Obama’s tax proposals, which he pitched in his State of the Union Address, are not being well-received by Republican lawmakers. An Arnaudville man was arrested accused of stealing more than $36,000 from his elderly grandmother. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Department says Martin Thibodeaux made 34 unauthorized withdrawals from the woman’s bank account. The woman’s safety deposit box, which had an unknown amount of money inside, was found empty as well. Thibodeaux is charged with financial exploitation of the elderly.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s office has arrested a woman for allegedly burning her child with cigarettes. After the child’s father brought him to the ER, medical staff observed signs of torture on the 5-year-old while treating him for burns to his hands and torso. After an investigation, authorities arrested 26-year-old Jessica Deville of Opelousas on a charge of cruelty of a juvenile.
